After a few years of dying my hair blond and cutting it etc. I dyed it back to my natural color (because it was so unhealthy it was litterally going to start falling out from all the bleaching).
I decided to start growing my hair in about 2003 and now it's down to my waist. I have dark brown wavy-ish hair. Like you I don't do anything to it except wash and condition it and I use a leave-in conditioner too (Infusium 23). I cut the ends myself about once or twice a year but not very much just an inch or two. The only complain I have about my hair is that it is very thin and tangles almost immediately after I have brushed it. It is very frustrating but I rather have to brush it often than cut if short. Also living in Florida the humidity is horrible and that doesn't help with the firzz. I wash my hair every 3 days and it looks the best the day I wash it but I can't wash it too often because the chemicles and stuff in the water just ruin it. I have been thingking about buying bottles of spring water and washing my hair with that. I once lived in a house where we used well water and my hair was so beautiful then, it didn't even frizz. I think the water has a lot to do with it.
I love my hair, it's a huge part of me and it just makes me feel pretty.

My hair is waist length, very dark brown and staright as a board and I have bangs (because I have an incredibly wide forehead). My hair has never been really short and I would probably feel naked without it. It's never been permed or colored and the last time I used a dryer (high school) I burned out the motor. And, like Melissa, I use Infusium. And I think you may be right about the well water. I had never thought about it before, but my hair looks much better than it did when I lived in the city many years ago.
Most people think I keep my hair long b/c I think it looks good that way. I don't know if it does or doesn't and don't particularily care! LOL! The reason I keep it this way is becasue I'm not one of those "hair" people who can do anything with it. I'm doing good to get it in a ponytail! Plus, this way I don't have to but gel, hairspray, etc. Besides, less time I spend on my hair, the more time I have for books! Same goes for makeup! :)

Mellissa ...
If that's your picture on your icon [squint!] then your hair is very similar to my daughter's hair and about the same length ... except her hair is a midge lighter. :D Her hair and the horse she sometimes ride are almost perfect matches!
Her hair is also on the thinner side and tangles within 5 minutes of brushing. She uses Garnier Fructis Sleek n Shine. That seems to help. I'll have to tell her about the Infusium 23 ... we also have very hard water here. It leaves what looks like calcium deposits on our bath and shower.

Crazy Lemur Lady ...
You're probably one of those lucky people that can wear bangs. I've a cowlick that forces bangs to part. I wouldn't mind that so much except that it parts ALMOST (but not quite) in the middle. My hair ends up looking like a mistake :D
Both of you are probably correct about the water. My sister just moved down here to Houston from Dallas. The water in Dallas is much softer. She gripes about the condition of her hair continuously.
:D The less time for hair; the more time for books. The less money for hair; the more money for books. That works out well!

My aunt lives in Florida and is always complaining about the water and the damage it causes her hair. Her hair is very thin as well. She bought the Thera shower. It's a shower head with a filtration system. Here's the website, it's probably cheaper than buying water and she says it's made a huge difference with her hair

racethom,
Yep that's me in the icon, it was taken back in 2006, and though you can't really see all of my hair in the pic it is actually a few inches longer now. That was a good hair day by the way. :-P

I have super thick wavy hair. I don't remember my natural hair color lol! As of now I'm a blonde. I have long, layered hair, but once the summer's over I want an A line bob. I rocked the perm in the 80's with the crunchy big hair, I did the jennifer aniston Friends hair cut and before I grew out my hair I had a cool shag. I love experimenting with my hair. It grows really fast and I have an awesome stylist who prevents me from making mistakes. I use what ever shampoo is on sale in CVS and once a month I use olive oil to make a hair mask I leave on for 15 min. It washes out easily and keeps my hair moisturized and helps prevent braking. My grandmother colored her hair more than I did and she swore by it.

sweetpea78,
Would you be willing to share your olive oil hair mask recipe?
I am always looking for natural ways to take care of my hair.

Melissa - I just use olive oil (other oils don't work as well). I put the oil on dry hair, just enough to cover all my hair, The first time I used way too much and I had to wash it a couple of times to get it all out. I wrap my hair in plastic wrap or an old towel if I'm feeling lazy and leave it for 15min. Rinse, shampoo well and you really don't have to condition it. I like it b/c it smooths out the ends to give you that just cut look and it leaves your hair shiny, but not greasy.

Thanks sweetpea78, I have used olive oil before but I don't remember if I liked the results or not. I know I didn't wrap it in anything so I think I will try the saran wrap idea.

sweetpea78 ...
I've met several people that have died their hair so often and from such an early age that they also don't remember what their natural color is :D It sound like you had fun experimenting with different looks.

Well I can say I llllllloooooovvvvvveeee my hair too :) About two years ago I stopped relaxing my hair and went back to my natural texture, which I luv. Did I say that already? LOL anyway currently I am starting locs. My hair is super easy to maintain, just wash and condition. Also saving a ton of money.

I just recently cut my hair--just above shoulder length, with a bunch of layers, bangs and it has given it new life. My color is dark brown. I haven't done in any coloring since last fall, and then it was just a bit darker than my natural color, so it's pretty much in its natural state right now... and I haven't gone blonde for a long, long time. LOL
I've had every variant as far as length is concerned, from down to my waist, to short, short, spiky, short--and just about every color except for fire red...no good with my skin color. I have had most variants of blond, except for platinum, which I have been kicking around, but probably won't do. I've had burgundy, plum, blue black, copper, and most variations on the brown theme...I did have one really bad incident with a professional colorist (I use that term very loosely considering the results) and I ended up with that horrible brassy blonde...that was a nightmare! LOL...but mostly the colors have worked out.
I have really healthy hair and most hair stylists complain it is too healthy to work with--too shiny, too healthy, too slick...whatever. I like doing different things with my hair, but my usual habit is to let it get a bit long (down to my shoulder blades) and then to make some kind of drastic change.

That reminds me of something strange. (No, I don't know why it reminds me of something strange.) The mom of one of my kid's friends had blond hair to below her waist for just about forever. She hit her late 40's and did a drastic cut to just below her ears. Now it's a light brown. She's never colored her hair. Isn't that weird?

It's funny, that I should find this post, as just today I started contemplating making a significant change in my hair. I've had it all, (just about) My hair in it's natural state is dark brown, with hints of auburn. It is thick and semi-wavy. I've done perms, and had very short hair too. I've colored my hair often and do it myself now from a box. I always said, I wouldn't until I started going gray at 34. I'm 39 now and have so much grey in my hair, I look a good 10 years older than I am. (Not that there is anything wrong with that...:) ) It's all one length with no bangs for the 1st time in my life. It brushes my shoulders in length. My dilemma is that I don't think it suits me. I'm overweight and I think this doesn't do anything for the shape of my face. I don't "do" my hair, cuz I'm just not good at it. I hate, hate, hate (did I say hate?) having my hair in my face. So, it's in a pony tail all the time, and that doesn't do anything for me either.
What do I do? My dh likes my hair long, but wouldn't cause a fuss if I cut it. aaargh!

It's my very unexpert opinion that most, not all obviously, women look better in shorter hair as they get older. There are exceptions of course.
Go to a good hair-dresser, though, and get his/her opinion. Get several opinions. They see hair all day and have had training. They should have a pretty good feel for what works best for your face shape and type of hair.
I've been lucky with my hairdresser and have followed her from place to place as she moves jobs. It's like finding a good doctor ... once you find one, stick to that person.
