DH and I gave up on ICE TRAP - Kitty Sewell, the BOCD we were listening to in the car. It's supposed be suspense, but the only suspense was when the suspense was going to begin. I liked it more than DH, but to keep the peace for carpooling, I changed out to one I knew we'd both dig. I'll get ICE TRAP later as a handheld and read on my own.

      Currently:
BOCD in the car: CUT & RUN - Jeff Abbott, 3rd in Judge Whit Mosley series, suspense/thriller, CD 1 of 11

I finished the so-so BOT in the car SKIN DEEP: A Bodybags Mystery - Christopher Golden. Aspects of it were good, but the narrative and descriptions and the stupidity of the cops and college campus drove me nuts! I admire how smart the main character, Jenna, is. But that was it. The story grew tiresome. And I really liked the very first book in the series. This one is the 6th, so I am wary that the rest will be phhht, too. So I think I am done with this series. Ah well...

      Currently:
BOCD in the car: DEATH'S HALF ACRE - Margaret Maron, 14th Judge Deborah Knott mystery series. THIS series continues to be excellent
Purse book: DESOLATE ANGEL - Chaz McGee, paranormal mystery, very close to finishing this really good book

Its quite weird how i can relate to her obviously not in every way. i'm really enjoying it however i sometimes forget that a real person wrote this and these things really did happen, i think thats just my way of dealing with reading such an emotional, moving book i tell myself that its not real and its just a novel to try and stop myself from crying or getting too upset when reading what she went through, is that weird of me?

Hot Blooded by Christine Feehan, Maggie Shayne, Emma Holly and Angela Knight (Anthology)
    3 Stars

I picked up this book figuring it would be a good chance to try each of these authors. I ended up liking one story, thinking another was ok and didn't care for the other two. These are all about vampires, werewolves or some sort of paranormal mix of vampires. Feehan's story is about an animal activist that ends up rescuing a vampire. Shayne's story is about a doctor (who is a werewolf) and a college professor doing research on the existance of werewolves. Holly's story is about a vampire who takes a liking to the local pastry shop owner. Knight's story is about a cop who as a run in with her teenage crush.

I liked Knight's story the best and found Feehan's story pretty good. I didn't care for Shayne's and that may just be my own hang up because no matter how hot a doctor is, when I come in for help, I don't think the idea of him playing with my breasts during an exam is acceptable. Holly's story was sort of ok, but I didn't really care for it. I felt that all the stories lacked any sort of complex plot, if they had much of a plot beyond the sex. I will be trying a book by Knight but haven't decided on any of the other authors yet, besides I don't think I'll be reading anything else by Shayne.

Into the Forest by Jean Hegland
    3 Stars

Eve and Nell have been on their own since their mother died from cancer and a freak accident took their father. Miles from town, which doesn't have anything to offer since disease and other unknown causes pretty much destroyed it, they must learn to live on their own.

The rumors of something better in the east, the scare of strange men and other adventures, created a mostly interesting read. I wish that more was said about what was going on outside of the girl's small farm. I enjoyed the first part of this novel but didn't care much for parts of the latter half. Certain events were not needed and only caused me to weird out. Written as a young adult book, this was an easy read for and the main character's depth was enjoyable. I thought her sister could have been done better and felt she was a little one dimensional. I enjoyed parts of this book but was disappointed in the end so it gets 3 stars from me.

Fables 8: Wolves by Bill Willingham and others
    4 Stars

This is a continuation of the story of all the fairy tale creatures, escaping their own lands and moving into New York City. This particular addition to the Fables graphic novels revolves around Bigby Wolf and Snow White, plus a little bit of Cinderella. Bigby has been can not enter The Farm where Snow White is living and as he is no longer the sheriff of Fabletown, he has been drifting from place to place. But when a special mission comes up, Fabletown has their work cut out just trying to find them.

This was a very fun additional to the Fables books. I really like the wolves. I am glad I've been sticking with this series and find them to a nice change from a traditional novel.

Kirinyaga: A Fable of Utopia by Mike Resnick
    3 Stars

As the world changes and technology becomes a part of every day life, a group of traditionalist from Africa request to settle their own world were they can embrace the life that was lost to computers, cars and commerce. This is the story of the Kikuyu's desire for a utopia. Told from the view of the mundumugu, a holy man, the short story almost format made it an interesting read. Koriba, the holy man, remembers life before coming to Kirinyaga and wants to remove everything the “Europeans” brought to his people out of their lives. Yet he controls the weather through a computer. This is the story of the development of the utopia the Kikuyu hope to build.

I enjoyed parts of this story and other parts really disturbed or upset me. I also couldn't understand how a multi-national ruling body allow a society to re-embrace practice that today are viewed as barbaric. An example from this book is the practice of female circumcision, which is practiced in Koriba's utopia. I can't understand why it would be allowed to continue considering the health problems that it can bring about in women. There are many other things and I'm sure that part of having those activities was to convey a point in this novel, but I had problems even believing it would be allowed enough for the “utopia” to start. As for other things in this novel, I found some stories a little long and boring. Mostly, I was frustrated by this novel and the pigheadedness of Koriba. I have enjoyed other novels by Mike Resnick and will continue to read them but I am really on the fence if I would recommend this novel.

    Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore
3.5 Stars (Rounded down to 3)

This is Christopher Moore's first novel and in a way it shows, but I still enjoyed this. Moore is always good for some weirdness and a laugh.

Practical Demonkeeping is about the small town of Pine Cove, which appears later in additional Moore books. Travis is a drifter that comes to town looking for an old friend, but along with him comes the demon he awoke 70 years ago. Travis didn't mean to awake the demon and still have problems with the demon source of food, humans. So, with hopes of getting rid of the demon, the reader is introduced to Pine Cove and the people who live there.

This was a fun read in the past and just as enjoyable on audio. I like many of the characters but feel that there are some gaps in the flow of the story. Still a good introduction to Moore and the creatures and people that populate his novels.

    Angel's Advocate
    book 2
    by Mary Stanton
    urban fantasy, paranormal mystery (very)

After reading the first book in the series, I was really looking forward to this second book. I was not disappointed. For those of you who want a strong paranormal mystery story, this series will fit the bill. The writing is even, the action is constant, and the main character is likeable. She is an young attorney that has inherited her uncle's business. She found out that his business practices are not limited to the living and that she's now on the side of the angels.

    Amy T.

    Shelfari description:

Money’s been tight ever since Bree Winston Beaufort inherited Savannah’s haunted law firm Beaufort & Company along with its less-than-angelic staff. But she’s finally going to tackle a case that pays the bills representing a spoiled girl who stole someone’s Girl Scout cookie money. But soon enough she finds that her client’s departed millionaire father needs help too. Can she help an unsavory father/daughter duo and make a living off of the living?

    Friday Night Bites
    book 2
    by Chloe Neill
urban fantasy, paranormal romance, paranormal mystery (barely)

I loved the first book in this series but am not quite as enthusiastic about this second book. It's still a fun book to read but it begins to lean a little too much toward paranormal romance for my present reading mood. I'll still look out for the third book in the series.

    Amy T.

    Shelfari description:

The story of a young heiress’s initiation into the dark society of the Chicagoland Vampires continues… Ten months after vampires revealed their existence to the mortals of Chicago, they’re enjoying a celebrity status usually reserved for the Hollywood elite. But should people learn about the Raves—mass feeding parties where vampires round up humans like cattle—the citizens will start sharpening their stakes. So now it’s up to the new vampire Merit to reconnect with her upper class family and act as liaison between humans and bloodsuckers, and keep the more unsavory aspects of the vampire lifestyle out of the media. But someone doesn’t want peace between them—someone with an ancient grudge…

I totally skipped book 2. Darn it! Oh well, it was still a very enjoyable book. The very first few pages did worry me somewhat because I thought it had changed drastically from a paranormal mystery / urban fantasy to a paranormal romance ... but I was proved wrong. It had a strong story line (but one that wouldn't make sense without reading the first book). Skipping the second book was regretable but hopefully I didn't miss too much. LOL! I could pretend to be the heroine. She has memory problems about her past ALL of the time and to the point that she has to keep a journal to remind her future self about important events. :) Somehow, she actually manages to have a fairly believable personal relationship despite the memory loss. Most of the story, though, is full of non-stop action. As in most paranormal fiction, lots of action means she gets hurt a lot too. It alwasy amazes me how quickly story book characters get over damage. I do recommend this series and give it high marks.

    Blood Bargain
    book 2
    Keira Kelly series
    by Maria Lima
urban fantasy, paranormal mystery (mildly), paranormal romance (mild)

I started reading this book about four or five book reports ago but just couldn't quite get into the story. It felt a bit bumpy and discontinuous. I also knew that my reaction to the book could simply be my reading mood at that time. I did what I normally do when this happens: I put it down, read a few other books, and came back to reading the book again. That was a great decision. I don't know whether the last half of the book was just better or whether I was just much more in the mood to read this story last night. I just know that I'm glad that I did come back to it. I'm actually looking forward to reading the next book now ... and it's already out on the shelves :)

Just finished Color Me Jazzmyne by Marian L. Thomas

I would like to share with you a fantastic new fiction book I recently read, Color Me Jazzmyne, that had a impact on how I viewed rape victims. This is one of those rare books that has no profanity or curse words! This book could be read by a 14 year old as well as a 90 year old! It's funny, heartwarming, empowering and most of all needed! Readers of Color Me Jazzmyne have been captivated by the depth of the emotional journey that the book takes them on. It digs deep into what it takes for women to embrace who they are no matter what size, color, educational background or social status. Sisters will learn to love themselves, embrace their faith, despite what society says or the voices that surround them!

Listen to the Audio-Chapter 1 and tell us how you feel about this topic.

The Motivation Behind Color Me Jazzmyne
    ISBN-10: 0615270670; ISBN-13: 978-0615270678

Color Me Jazzmyne addresses a major issue in our society today..."Rape is often the "hush" word in our lives. It's the thing that we prefer to put into the closet of other skeltons that we pray no one has the key to. Child abuse often occurs at a young age and more than often it is done by someone that is very close---a family member or friend of the family. It's a difficult thing to get over, it's even more difficult to explain.

According to one statistic.... one out of every six women will be raped over their lifetime and 73% of all rape victims know their assailants. In fact, studies have shown that 60% of all sexual assaults are not reported. I hope that women who read this book and have gone through something similar will find the courage to reach out and talk to someone about it." -- author Marian L. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore
3.5 Stars (Rounded up to 4)

This was an enjoy Moore book. Continuing the happenings in Pine Cove from Practical Demonkeeping, this novel introduces new characters with new bizarre quirks and adventures. When a creature rises from the depths of the ocean to take up residence in Pine Cove, the adventure starts. It was sort of fun listening to this one for the first time (I've read it a number of times) right after listening to Practical Demonkeeping. Not one of Moore's greatest works, but still good for a laugh.

This is one of the many books that make up the Repairman Jack series. It was a fun and adventuresome read with twists, turns and some seat gripping moments.

When Jack's father is in a car accident and ends up in a common, Jack ends up leaving New York for sunny Florida to check on his father. Little does Jack know that the situation is more complicated then it appears. After meeting his father's strange neighbor and learning that the call about the accident came in twenty minutes before it even happened, Jack finds himself looking into what really happened and the strange group that live in the Everglades.

I found this to be an excellent addition to the Repairman Jack series. It was fast paced with interesting characters. I felt some of the conversation between Jack and other characters were at times a little forced but it didn't decrease my enjoyment in this book. Full of a good adventure of creepy people, this was a book to keep you flipping the pages.

    Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory
    4 Stars

Set in a world where demons jump from person to person – sometimes causing damage, this book is the story of Del. Del was in an car accident recently and the demon who inhabited him has a boy, is back. Searching for some way to get the demon to go away, he travels to Chicago, looking for a doctor who may have breakthrough research on demons. Little does Del know that finding the doctor will only set events in motion that may end up killing him.

This was a good read. It was unusual and interesting at the same time. It had some adventure thrown in and the mystery of what is really causing the demons and how to stop the demons added some nice twists to this novel. I liked Del and found him to be a complex and interesting character. I didn't catch all of the references in certain parts of the book as one character Del meets is Philip K. Dick, whose books I've never read. I don't think it took away from my enjoyment of this novel as a whole though. I thought the small chapters spread through the novel that concern a single demon and some event with them were interesting and didn't distract significantly from the story but I didn't care of all of them either. The first time is really through me off as I didn't read the chapter title (I normally don't). On the whole, I found this an interesting and unique read and would recommend it someone else.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I did listen to it as opposed to reading it and did spend a week where I couldn't get to listening to it. I liked this a great deal but didn't love it and that may be due to the gap in when I could listen or if I just wasn't completely captivated by it. I liked Bod and enjoyed his many adventures but something just didn't make me fall in love with this story. I'd still recommend it another person.

When the dorms empty for Thanksgiving, Robin and a few others have chosen to stay then go home for the holiday. When another presence shows up, the five students band together and develop a strange rapport with each other. Little do they know about how important the five of them being together is going to change the rest of the term.

This was a fast paced and quick read. I enjoyed it and although I liked the characters, in some ways I didn't like them. They were all flawed, which although good, I found how quickly they banded together in some ways, unbelievable. I still had questions when the novel finished but they were just little ones and could be that they were tied up at some point, but I missed it. I did enjoy this book and plan on reading more by this author.

In this addition to the Repairman Jack series, Jack is trying to find an women's adult son. After joining a strange and rising cult, the man disappears and Jack has been hired to find him. To do that, Jack will need to tap into many of his tricks, since the only way Jack will be able to even get into the church, is to join it. While trying to infiltrate the cult, Jack must also try to find out who is black mailing a nun.

This addition had a lot going on and was fairly fast paced. While I enjoyed this immensely, I started getting a little frustrating because things kept going wrong for Jack. I kept thinking, “Come on, something has to go right.” It felt unreasonable to have everything going wrong through the whole novel. I enjoyed it and found the second half better then the first half, and after I got over that if something could go wrong, it did. I still enjoyed this and look forward to reading the next book in this series, but might go for something with a little less action before reading the next.

    Grave Secret
    book 4
    Harper Connelly (or Grave) series
    by Charlaine Harris
    urban fantasy, paranormal mystery

Charlaine Harris never fails to come through in her writing. I've read her cozy mystery series; I've read her not exactly cozy mystery series; I've read her fantasy/horror series; I've read her stand-alones; and I've read this paranormal mystery series. This particular book pulls together many loose ends in the life of Harper and her stepbrother/lover. I've finally started coping with that relationship myself. (Like they say, they aren't blood related.) The story itself was interesting but definitely not a who-dunnit. I don't think there were enough clues for the reader to figure out what happened. It's more the type of mystery where the reader finds out bits and pieces as the main character slowly unearths information. I was smart this time! <pat my own back> I didn't start reading this book late at night. Charlaine Harris is one of my "danger authors" and is detrimental to my sleeping time.

The Romanov Bride by Robert Alexander
    4 stars

This book is told by two people: the historical figure Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna (aka Ella) and the fictitious character Pavel. Ella is the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and the sister of the tsarina Alexandra. The book tells the story of Ella's childhood in Darmstadt in Germany, her marriage with Grand Duke Serge(Tsar Alexander III's brother), her nun years, and up to her death. Running parallel to her story is the story of Pavel, a Russian peasant who becomes a revolutionary. Throughout the book the chapters move between these two characters as until their lives become intertwined.

I really enjoyed this book. I've always been interested in the Romanov history and this book really help me learn a lot more. I am looking forward into adding Robert Alexander's two other books into my tbr pile.

    Fade Out
    book 7
    Morganville Vampire series
    by Rachel Caine
    urban fantasy, young adult

I couldn't figure out whether I was in a reading slump or whether the books that I was trying to read were just that so-so. I'm also not feeling well so that could be a factor. In the space of two days, I've tried out five books (and am still in the middle of those five books). "Fade Out" was attempt number 6 and it was great. Between periods of time when I faded out myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I'm pretty sure, though, that someone that's not been keeping up with the series would not enjoy it nearly as much. This is not a series to be read out of order. The main character is attending college but she is still only of high school age. As a mom, the only part of this story that really bothers me is that the main character is sexually active. Yeah, I know ... silly of me. (No, there are no graphic scenes in the book.)

This is the story of two boys, the one who was stolen and the one who replaced him.

I'm not sure what to say about this book. I had heard great things about it but this just failed to deliver for me. I enjoyed it but had to push myself to finish it – although the ending was considerably better for me then the start. I was bored through most of the first half of the book. I didn't really like any character until the story progressed more. Because of the ending, this book gets three stars, but if the story had continued in the same format as the start, I would have given it two.

When a group of travelers end up tramping around the Yucatan jungle looking for the missing brother of one of them, they figured they'd be home again by sunset. The next day would be filled with sunshine, beaches and drinks. They didn't know they wouldn't be going home because when you step in to this small patch of jungle, it never lets things go.

This was a good read. Although I think the set up too way to long for this novel I still enjoyed the thrilling moments it did have. The fact that I didn't care for any of the character's though probably effected my enjoyment of this book. I like ancient evil adventures and found this one could have had more action and less “getting there” parts. The suspense didn't build well for me and I found myself disappointed that what I thought should have been coming, never came. Oh the whole, this was still a good read but it won't blow you away.

3ish Stars (Rounded up to 4)

Image a world were everyone is under 18 and at night, the walls that keep the monsters out, move. This is what happens when Thomas wakes up with a group of boys surrounding him. The only thing he remembers is his name...and maybe a little bit about the maze. The maze is the place the boys live and at night the walls close while the monsters roam on the other side. Thomas is determined to find a way out because of some knowledge that there is something else out there.

This was a pretty good book. I'm not sure how I feel about is I think there could have be more to this book. I also question on well society would work if it was just boys and in this book it didn't seem to have much conflict between the boys – yes, there was some but I suppose I would expect more. Because of that, I found the story a little unrealistic. I did enjoy it and if this becomes a series, I will probably pick up another. It was well paced, although I'm not sure I would consider it fast paced, and enjoyable.

    3.5 Stars

After enjoying another book by Spindler, I had trouble getting into anything else until I had read another. This one, although slow to start, was still full of suspense and a quick, fun read.

When Avery's father dies suddenly, she returns to her rural Louisiana home to grieve. When rumors start swirling around the town of a strange group the causes neighbors to go missing and she realizes there may be something in it that explains why her father would commit suicide. But with the rumors, Avery starts to realize that the town that appears to have never changed, has and it may not be for the better.

This was a good, fast mystery read. I felt the beginning was a little weak and one of characters drove me crazy. In some ways I felt the towns people in this novel may give some of the mystery away because they feel to good to be true. I still enjoyed it and will be reading more by this author.
