I was interested to see if fellow members had a take on Adi Shankara and his ideal of the unity of the soul and Brahman. I'm reading a book by an Ismaili that details his "unity" view and his outcome towards what is essentially nondualism - is Adi Shankara viewed as buddhist or is his branch of mysticism more Hindi based, in the sense of the "older" religion, and are there any here who follow his philosophy, which is similar to other mystics from more monotheistic religions, though it seems clear essentially Shankara is more a union man than many others. Does anyone have any suggestions as to further reading?

I read that Gautama came back in two more incarnations. Shankara was his next. (ESOTERIC BUDHISM, by
A.P. Sinnett). Look into ADVAITA VEDANTA--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adi_Shankara
    Books:
Viveka-Cudamani - Translated by Swami Turiyananda
Shankara's Crest-Jewel of Discrimination, by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood
    Upadesa Sahasri of Sri Sankaracarya
These Swamis are from the Sri Ramakrishna Math - Mylapore, Chennai - 600 004, India [srkmath@vsnl.com]

Amazon may have Avaita Vedanta Books & the above books.

    Other books:
    Talks With Ramana Maharshi
I AM THAT, by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

I find it fascinating that you say it was 'an Ismaili' who was commenting on this, since Ismaili are a Muslim Shia sect. I have lived in Oman where they are predominantly Ismaili. Not to overstate the matter, I don't think the Shia are particularly mystical, Sufis aside, so I wonder what this Ismaili's interest in Hindu philosophy was.....

incidentally here is Adi Shankara encountering Lord Shiva in the guise of an Untouchable: did he subsequently preach against the caste system?
