Anyone interested in forming an actual book group in Singapore?

    Hi All,

Hope you are all on a roll reading all the interesting and fun books that are out there!

Based on the discussions with one of our members, I would like to gauge what is the level of interest within our group to start a real life book group in Singapore wherein we can have certain recommended books for the group followed by a meet up and discussion on these books.

Please let me know if you are interested by either replying to this discussion thread or by sending me a message.

Look forward to your thoughts and replies!

Rashmi, I guess this is not working. Unfortunate of course but if no one is interested, not much one can do about a book club. No wonder I could not find any here. Happy reading, though!

Hi Neon, except for Rashmi and myself, no one else responded to this idea of a book club until you responded. Since there are no groups yet, it would be difficult to further segregate the members according to age group. Your idea is a good one, except that there aren't people/members in this forum who have shown any interest so far. If you are able to get a local group going, among your age group (assuming young adult?), I would certainly encourage your group in whatever way that I can. Rashmi, any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Hi Neon, Thanks for expressing interest in Singapore Shelfari. It would be great if we can start an actual book group, and like you said exchanged and shared our thoughts and books as well. However, like Anup aka Orion_in pointed out, it is slightly difficult to get Singapore readers to form an actual group. Do you know any others who would be interested to join in? I think even if we have around 6-8 members we can give it a go :))

I'll be interested to join so count me in if there is any activity going on. Participation wise, I believe it depends on the genre of the books for discussion as well. I'm sure everyone loves some variety and look for new good reads.

That's Great Bisou :) Do you think you would have friends who would also be interested?

Any suggestions on how we can organize it in Singapore... how to decide the genre etc?

Thanks for responding Bisou and to Rashmi for her enthusiasm and interest from start. I agree with Bisou that everyone would love a new read and variety, I guess we all have some books on the shelf common and perhaps some common interest in books and genre as well. Its good that we have started getting a couple of interested people talking on this forum.

Thanks for your interest. Rashmi started Singapore Shelfari and I joined discussions, both of us thought that it would be a good idea for a local book club, we've never met but on Shelfari, though. Response has been rather poor to this idea and we may have one/two more interested people. If there are a few people who can get together, it would be a good start for the book club. Let's see what Rashmi's and others response may be.

Hi Shobhasri - Thanks for expressing interest in joining a book club. So we have 5 potential members now - Orion_in, Shobhasri, Bisou, Neon and myself. I think can get around 2-4 friends to join in and perhaps you guys can also bring people along.

So what say Singapore - should we start our very own book club now?? Any ideas? :)))

I am in, as you know. However, at the moment away in India for housewarming and will be back on 10th November. I will be picking up a copy of William Dalrymple's latest book Nine Lives while I am here and maybe some others as well, time permitting. Hope we get a group. Have a good week. Anup (orion_in)

Great Anup! Let me think more about how to start our book club and perhaps by the time you are back we will have something going! If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to write to me personally or post it here on the group forum.

I am thinking of having our first meeting somewhere around 14 or 15 of November.. what say? We can have a general first meeting where in we set our goals and objectives and start from there.

    some prelim questions:
    1. whr do we meet?
    2. i s'pose the answer to q1 depends on where we all live/work?

i work in buona vista, live in clementi. you?

Thanks Rashmi, I am free on 14th and 15th or if that does not work for others, the following weekend. Shobhasri: I live in Punggol and work at Seletar Airport, that's opposite side of the country but for me, it is not inconvenient to go anywhere. So, venue is quite flexible. Any others with food for thought?

That's a good point Shobhasri - we need to figure out where to meet.. the venue costs (if at all), the timings etc. I live and work in the East.. so I guess Anup, me and you are from 3 different sides of Singapore. I am sure there will be people coming in from all sides. I guess we should try and find something centrally located.. what do you think? Any suggestions? I will try and think more about this..
