Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a...more »

Oh yeah. I was so excited to be done that I didn't bother to say anything about the book itself. Suffice it to say that it is epic in length and breadth, but that it is extremely entertaining, enlightening, and eclectic. (how's that for allieration, or assonance, or whatever the hell it is?) It's worth the read, but keep in mind that it is the first of a three-book series. I have decided that I finished the first, and therefore must read the second two, AS WELL as Cryptonomicon, which is a stand-alone, but references back and forth with "The Baroque Cycle."

Good work! I've tried three times to read it (and I'm a big Stephenson fan), and just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try again!

I feel like that about Dune, although I'm not done with it yet, about 2/3 there though. Just small print and lots of pages, not to mention the lack of time to read lately.

I try and failed. It was to long and boring for me. Sorry.

Congratulations on finishing it. I read it twice and finally decided to start on The Confusion. I hate to say it, but I don't think I'll be finishing this series. The interesting stuff started getting too spread out in Quicksilver, and the Confusion is actually two books interleaved- chapters about Jack, and (long) chapters about Eliza. The Eliza chapters seem concerned, as before, with the hypothetical intrigues of royal society at the time--which is not the reason I read Stephenson! Best of luck, enjoy.

Good for you. I couldn't get through the first 100 pages (which is rare; I always give a book a 100-page tryout), because I thought it was a boring, self-important mess.

But that's just me and I understand some people find the book very enjoyable. I can't imagine how, but I respect their right to disagree with me. :)

Oooh... You should read his book Diamond Age. It would be the perfect palate cleanser :)
