Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics

I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a...more »

Hi, I am a great fan of Anne McCaffrey, and now he is getting into hios writing, her son Todd too (though he has a long way to go to be as good a story teller as his mother). I mostly read, re-read and re-read the dragon books and the Catteni Sequence, I am reading the fourth in that series now, having re-reead the other three as a bed-time read. How about you? Please join me into this group, thanks

Still think the best of the Pern Books are Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums...the first series wasn't bad though.

I'm a sucker for her early works like Dragonflight, Restoree, Decision at Doona, The Ship Who Sang and some of her early non-sf/fantasy novels.

We are going to start a Book Of The Month of Anne's books if anyone is interested in re-reading her series... or if you have always been interested but weren't sure where to start. We are going to start with DragonFlight I'm thinking around the 15th of this month. If you are interested join the group and let me know your thoughts!

As someone who hasn't read any of her books, what would you say is the big appeal of her work?

For me, the appeal of McCaffrey is that she creates worlds that capture my imagination and characters that I care about. However, she was my entree into SF/Fantasy back in middle school, and on re-reads her prose strikes me as clunky, and I actually become less invested in her worlds and with her characters as her series' go on. So, for instance, I love the initial Pern trilogy (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon) and I love the Harper Hall Trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums) but most of the other Pern books are dissatisfying. I love The Rowen and Damia, but I stopped reading the Tower and the Hive series pretty soon after those two. I love Freedom's Landing, but again gave up on the series after the second book. It got to the point that I kind of wished she were more like Robin McKinley, who never writes sequels despite the clamor of her fans.

Joel, for someone who has yet to read any of her books... I would say the big appeal of her work would be her worlds and characters. Right pretty much why you should love a book... Anne has a way of painting great sci-fi and fantasy worlds unlike many others that you read. Her Character development is more of a drop a character in your lap and you start to figure them out over time... which I perfer over someone like Eddings... sometimes. She has a way of drawing you to characters and making you feel empathic and sympathic... again an obvious to why you should enjoy a book. I don't think you can really give full advice on an entire series if you've never read the whole thing. I truly dislike when people read the first two books, like most ppl with Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth series, and write off the rest of the series. I understand it might not be your cup of tea, however you cannot give opionon on the entire series, becuase you have not read them. Saying this, some of her books are better than others... but they all go together (espicially that of the Dragon Riders of Pern Books). Getting attached to characters as well as enjoying the full ride of her stories is what keeps me as a fan Joel... you should just pick up one book and see what you think!

Thanks for the response guys. Is there a particular book or series I should start with?

I'd say start at the beginning with some of her earliest books like Dragonflight, Decision at Doona and The Ship Who Sang. They begin three of her series. There is also her short story collection Get Off the Dragon that contains stories that are later expanded on.

DragonFlight. Start there then get a feel of where to go... its the beginning of a trilogy. the group i posted above has a book list of her books in order and chronological order. as well as a few fans saying which direction to go. just because your not a member doesn't mean you can't check em out!

Again Joel as I stated above, we are about to do a book of the month deal in the group and we're starting out wtih Dragonflight... your more than welcome to join us!
