Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics

I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a...more »

What are you reading?: OCTOBER 09

I think this might be a good DB post to add to our group!

I am finishing up A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin. I am enjoying the series and am a little bummed that the next novel, well no-one really knows when it will be released!

I plan to pick up this week Naamah's Kiss by Jaqueline Carey. Her first six books in the Kushiel Series are wonderful and a great read if they are your cup of tea.

Next up is "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik or "Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett - depending on when my local bookshop gets the new Discworld book in.

I'm also eagerly awaiting A Dance with Dragons, but who knows when that will be out.

Currently I am reading The Book Thief. It is very good and I am glad I decided to try it.

I will pick up The Gathering Storm when it comes out and start it when I finish The Book Thief.

What did you think of 'The Alchemist'?

It is a very good “keep true to your dreams tale.” But unfortunately, Coelho chose to tell us the story, instead of allowing the story unfold before us.

Same with Ken Follitt’s The Pillars of the Earth, and Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariena Franklin: both of which are great stories with many good story elements, but were mostly told to us rather than shown.

All three of these might possibly have been genuine masterpieces if they had adopted a more active delivery mechanism. But still...well worth the bother to read.

"Unseen Academicals" by Terry Pratchett. Latest Discworld novel, not his best but an OK read.

"Flood" by Stephen Baxter. Story told over a few decades as a giant flood threatens the human race. Has some decent science and intriguing ideas, but it seems hastily written and has some daft plotting. He and Charles Stross really need to slow down, stop churning out multiple books per year, and do some second-draft editing/rewriting.

I can understand. The descriptions go on too over long many times. I was over 200 pages in before I felt like I wanted to keep reading.

Finishing up Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, which I am enjoying. I have a few quibbles with it, but overall I find myself wanting to read it when I have spare time. After that I am unsure. I have a few regular fiction books on my shelf that I may open up. I've also been re-reading the Wheel of Time, so I may just read book four of that.

Mistborn is one of my favorite new series. It does have some flaws but overall I would say that the good outweighs the bad and they are entertaining books.

I am very much enjoying it, and unless the ending is totally screwed on the Final Empire I will be picking up the 2nd book in the series. I'm also liking it much more than Elantris.

Not sci fi this month but Elmore Leonard's 'Rum Punch', the film version was called 'Jackie Brown' I have ordered the 2nd in the Southern Vampire Mysteries, 'Dead in Dallas' from the library but that may take a month or more. My reading now is eccelctic, I go from one genre to another but at night I am reading Anne McCaffrey's 'Freedoms. Ransom' which does fall into the sci-fi genre.

Coming up for me is "Death Dream" by Ben Bova, then "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Cooper, then....

an epic book that I can't wait to read, it's actually 10 books in one and is called "The Great Book of Amber" by Roger Zelazny and has all 10 Amber novels. I hear it's fantastic and I'm glad it's in print how it is, it would have been hard to track down all 10 books, since the individual ones are out of print.

i'm reading 2 books at the same time...LOL. I'm reading Jim Hines' "Goblin War" and starting Terry Brooks' "Magic Kingdom For Sale; Sold". I read Brooks book when it first came out years ago, but a friend of mine convinced me to read the series. I guess cause I just met Terry at a book signing here about a month ago...hehe.

That is a link to the new Sword of Truth group. You should join Puddleduck especially since your re-reading them presently, you would have a lot to add to the discussions I think!

I need to do this as well though, re-read the series all together rather than waiting long periods like i did last time for the next book to come out.
