This is not really a discussion

Hey, This is not really a discussion. I have just started to draw and I am struggling a lot. Do you guys have any tips on drawing? Or do i just have to practice a bit more? Drawing is fun, but it is really hard to draw a decent picture in my point of view.

Practice is very important. I try do do a little every day. I've taken classes and they really help (but the teacher is good), maybe there's a local art association that offers basics. Look at some of the books on the group shelf. I found the Classical Drawing book to be very useful.

hi, im a new member here... just wanted to help... if you're trying to draw realistic images, it helps a lot is you start with basic shapes.. don't be too frustrated if you haven't achieved what you really want because it takes practice to improve. likewise, there are also books that provide lessons and references..

Great link Sarah. I find that looking over the shoulder of an experienced artist is a great way to learn technique.

Hunter-X, Everyone draws differently. That is the beauty of it all. My approach is to follow the mark. What I mean by that is to allow the pencil to move where it will move. I approach it from the view that I will toss the drawing. I try to get my whole body into it. resolve to make at tleast one fo these drawings a day, with no intention of making a "great work." Just trust yourself to draw well. Let greatness come.

    Silver_Shadow,

Many artists have advised to steal shamlessly and often. For years I have copied the drawing and paintings of other artists. You can't use that material and claim it for your own, but it is a great way to see how other artists have interpreted what they see. Much of learning how to draw is simply learning how to translate what you see into a representational mark on the page. Copying how other artists have done that is a great way to learn.

I agree with the idea of "copying other artists" ,but it's a good idea to use the same materals. If the original was pen and ink, don't use a felt marker!

You Know, I think it was Michelangelo who said "Stupidly copy everything"... or something to that effect. I used to do that a lot in art school while the professors were lecturing with slides. It not only helped me remember the artwork I had to memorize but generated a lot of other ideas as well. Many artists throughout history intentionally "reference" one another- using one artist's artwork and taking a spin off of it that it makes it their own but is stil very visibily "copying" what the other artist did- it shows knowledge and respect and usually demands a certain intellectual response.

The best advice for learning to draw is to Draw something Everyday.... you should read a book called Everyday Matters- I will add it to the shelf so you can see it. It will give you lots of inspiration in this arena.

I'm actually taking a figurative drawing class and the basic steps they taught me was to start with
    1) head (simple circle),
    2) line of action (stick figure lines),
    3) proportion(measure distances on limbs),
    4) Anatomy (define the muscle shapes)
    5) Shading

I sucked the first 3-4 weeks, but practice does result in a realistic draw. Now I'm actually pretty good and surpised myself!
    You can do it too.
