    Dear Sancti:
Thanks for the link. A friend just bought me a copy of Le Clezio's "The Round and Other Cold Hard Facts," have you or anyone else read this work? Have you read any of Le Clezio's other novels?
    Best wishes,
    Scott

I have never heard of Le Clezio's books. I like the title name you've given. I wonder what the book is about.

      Dear G:
I just got the book in the mail; looks like a collection of short stories. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I can start reading "Round," given my current reading list. I will let you know more when I get to start reading.
      Best wishes,
      Scott

      Hi Jonas:

Happy New Year to you and your family!

I realized that I failed to follow up on this thread. I read "The Round and Other Cold Hard Facts" by Le Clézio; here's my Shelfari review of the short story collection:

"Stark, harsh, anxious, violent - words that can describe Le Clézio's powerful collection of short stories; sories that portray the struggles of the poor, the dispossessed, society's unwanted immigrants.

The following excerpt is from one of the more poignant stories, "O Thief, What is the Life You Lead?" - - - ". . . But sometimes too I tell myself that it will never, ever end because rich people have no consideration for the poor, and they couldn't care less; they keep their riches for themselves, closed up in their empty houses, in their safes. And to be able to have anything, even a crumb, you have to break into their houses and take it for yourself."

Also, upon recommendation of a friend, I purchased Le Clézio's "Onitsha" . . . I hear it is very good, and I am looking forward to reading it.

I just finished reading Onitsha, a very powerful novel. I have written a Shelfari review if anyone is interested. I found it even more powerful than Le Clézio's "The Round and Other Cold Hard Facts short story collection. Highly recommended!

      Hi Zawan:

      Wow, that's pretty interesting!

According to the Kirjasto literary internet site, "Le Clézio was born in Nice in 1940. Le Clézio's father, born in Mauritius, was a doctor, who moved from England to British Guyana, and then to Nigeria. Before the family was reunited, he lived years in Africa."

So Le Clézio certainly has African roots. I am currently reading his novel Onitsha; which is in Nigeria.

      Best wishes,
      Scott
