I think Love in the Time of Cholera is due for a re-read. I liked it the first time, but maybe this time I will be more alert to some interesting bits after reading his autobio, Living to Tell the Tale. I also read Memories of My Melancholy Whores -- I don't like the subject much, but the quality of writing is very good.

I tried to read "Love in the Time of Cholera." I gave up after a few pages. It must have been a rushed part of my life. I do like magical realism.

I LOVE his collection of short stories in Strange Pilgrims. I don't think that there's any story in it that I don't like.

Unlike 100 Years of Solitude, which is quite convoluted (but a wonderful read nonetheless), GGM's short stories exemplify a master storyteller. Try Strange Pilgrims and I know you wont be disappointed.

I've read the much acclaimed "One Hundred Years of Solitude," and interestingly, found it somewhat wanting. Perhaps I should re-read it. I've heard good things about "Love in the Time of Cholera," perhaps that should be on my reading list. Good luck!

I've always been afraid to try "One Hundred Years of Solitude." I am going to give it another try.

      Dear Chia:
I've only read 100 Years of Solitude. Just curious, is Love in the Time of Cholera written in the same magical realism style?
      Thanks,
      Scott

I still haven't tried One Hundred Years of Solitude. Well, I tried. Ended up putting it back on the shelf. I'm going to try again. Now. Wish me luck.

Your posts are so funny, Grapes! I too have had trouble getting into 100 Years and have not succeeded yet at finishing it. But everyone says it is so wonderful, so the only reaction I distrust is my own. Now I see someone else having similar problems. What is my problem with it? It feels very "far away" to me -- the narrative tells everything "at a distance," as though you are looking at a movie through a wide angle lens and never get close-ups. But perhaps that changes later on in the story? And Jim Jarmusch movies do the same thing, and no one ever discounted him for it.

      Just taste, I guess.

Not everyone felt "100 Years" was really that wonderful . . . however I did finish reading it!

I have read his 100 Years of Solitude and Love in The Time of Cholera. Undoubtedly, they are works of art of a literary genius and master.
