I'm going through a Samuel Beckett phrase and wanted to know what (of any!) of his plays/prose/poetry you have read/watched and whether you liked them or not, what you thought about the works, the person, the impact etc?

I didn't really like his plays all that much, but I enjoyed his novel Watt. It's more or less a satire on Wittgenstein's Tractatus, and logical positivism, so it helps if you're familiar with that type of philosophy (which I was studying at the time I read it.)

His plays seem to divide opinions veddy much. For me they are as close as anyone has managed to portray the human condition without any added colour. I haven't tried Watt yet, from my secondary reading about Beckett his early novels sound to intellectual rather than the post-war period.

I've read "Waiting for Godot" the quintessential "anti-play" - - seminal absurdist play

I'm hoping that Ian Mckellan does it again in London at the beginning of next year, I discovered Beckett too late to get this years tickets!

Have you tried Ionesco? His plays are often referred to as "anti-theatre." Rhinoceros is EXCELLENT and equally as absurd as Godot (possibly more?)
