"Your assignment: spotlight science fiction and fantasy titles where people of color are the leads, works by people of color in these genres or discuss your thoughts about race in these genres. Do you notice the absence of color? In what ways is race portrayed in fantasy and science fiction beyond using traditional racial terms like black and white? If the book covers prominently features people of color, does it affect your perception? Are we more comfortable with imaginary characters versus different race in these works?"

Of course Octavia Butler brilliantly addresses race in most if not all of her books. I found that in Fledgling, I had a hard time adjusting to a black lead character because in my mind vampires are always white. It was brilliant how she addressed not only race but genetic alteration as well. The main characters struggle to fight the violent discrimination she faces is a powerful homage to what people of color have gone through, and continue to endure now. I find Butler's works to be some of the best in creating thought provoking, easy to digest, science fiction with black leads.

Check out Nalo Hopkinson. I recently finished Brown Girl In The Ring. The grandmother and daughter practice a form of vodun? And they speak a combination an island dialect. I'm looking for more of her books now.
