Book Club "The Underneath" by Kathi Appelt

This book is the best I ever remember reading! Anyone interested in having a running discussion about the book beginning June 22nd, let me know. I will post some questions since I have spoken to the author and have a lot of thoughts on it.

No problem. I am so in love with this book. Kathi Appelt loves to hear feedback too. I may not be ready now by the 22nd! I cannot get a hold of the book and I wanted some specifics. Give me until the following week...thank you!!!! We do have another person doing this also...i recruited her from GoodReads.com.

meanwhile, if you could get into good teen sci-fi, i just finished "the sky inside" by clare dunkle. there is a lot of stuff to talk about in that book. clare is friends with kathi and has been nice enough to communicate with me. if you want to try that one, i own it so we could talk about that. is very good. really great character portrayals and action.

The Sky Inside sounds like a good book also. I'll need to pick it up, but it might not be until this week-end. I've had surgery in May and can't drive until July 22nd - not counting down or anything! My husband has been running all of my errands, including going to the bookstore or library for me.

debbie, if you finished "the underneath", i am wondering how you felt about the interwoven stories and themes...the tree, gar face, the serpent woman, ranger and puck, and sabine. do you think she was trying to compare ranger and garface-how differently the two dealt with suffering? or possibly ranger and grandma moccasin? how grandma clung to those she loved and how ranger tried to set them free? i can ask kathi. but, i wonder what your thoughts are.

I finally picked it up this week-end and am about half way through it. It is really difficult to put down. Hopefully, I will be finished with it the middle of the week.

I just completed the Underneath and really enjoyed it. It didn't take long to realize the interwoven stories. I think that she tried to compare Ranger and Grandmaw Moccasin. Once Grandmaw Moccasin realized the tragedy that she created due to her love, she felt that it was her "duty" to help someone else. The story definitely had a surprising ending. I was expecting Gar Face to meet his death with the aligator, but I wasn't expecting Grandmaw Moccasin to break Ranger's chain.

This is definitely a book that I would highly recommend. It is a love story, suspense, and fantasy rolled into one.

Thanks so much for recommending it!
