The intention is to discuss broad aspects of human history, civilizations as they existed and what it means to be human.

    Decolonization

Hello - I am a Ph.D. student and am currently reading in the areas of community resilience, decolonization, Aboriginal issues in Canada, and my latest area of interest is in the revival of the Clan system as a form of self-governance. I would be interested in hearing about books that other members of this group have read that would seem pertinent to my interests. The book I am currently reading is "REsistance to multiculturalism" by Jeffery Scott Mio and Gene I. Awakuni. It primarily addresses issues of multiculturalism in educational settings and the institutionalized resistance to meaningful multicultural relationships. in those contexts. I have long been interested in the aspects of cultural life that promote or prevent anti-racism efforts of groups and individuals. This seems like a timely topic given what is happening to the Indigenous peoples of Tibet and China, as well as the on-going struggles to de-colonize in many parts of the world. north America seems to be lagging behind in addressing these issues. Any thoughts, anyone....???

Your area of study sounds very interesting. It's so specific that I'm not sure any books I've read will be pertinent. "Guns, Germs, and Steel" is more general, a history book that touches on the development of societies from families, to clans to tribes, etc all in the larger context of geography, farming, and why some civilizations grow and prosper while others can't. You might see if it has anything that interests you.

Hi - thanks for your reply. I hardly ever check this site as I am too busy reading!!!!
"Guns, Germs and Steel" is a great book. I've been spending time with some Anishnaabe elders learning some oral history regarding clans over the past year and am also getting a lot out of that. I've also been doing a lot of reading on de-colonization. So time marches on, and while there isn't a lot on clans out there that makes much sense, I think I'm learning some things. Whether or not I can put it together in a meaningful way remains to be seen.
