October 2012 book discussion - Howl's Moving Castle

    Save Changes Cancel

Hi, guys! We (Lora Lynn and I) will be having the Howl's Moving Castle discussion on October 20, 2012. It will be held at 9 Spoons in Bayleaf Hotel. Time is from 1pm to 4pm.

To check the place out, here's a review of the venue: http://www.ourawesomeplanet.com/awesome/2012/01/bayleafs-9-spoons-sky-deck-and-cioccolata.html

So, some things about Howl's Moving Castle from Wikipedia:

This is a young adult fantasy novel by British author Diana Wynne Jones, first published in 1986. It won a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and was named an ALA Notable Book for both children and young adults. In 2004 it was adapted as an Academy Award-nominated animated film by Hayao Miyazaki. A sequel, Castle in the Air, was published in 1990. A second sequel, House of Many Ways was released in June 2008.

The author was given the idea for this book when a young boy asked her to make a story called "The Moving Castle".

We will only be discussing the first book but you are very welcome to read the other two and watch the movie for comparison (or if you're just curious, hehe). We have set up an FB events page for those who have questions and interested to join.

    http://www.facebook.com/events/218845148242958/?fref=ts

You may post any questions, suggestions, discussions or what have yous for this book. Hope we see you!

Hi guys! Has any of you started reading Howl's Moving Castle or had read it before? I was first introduced with the book recently because I got to see the Japanese animation first. It was a different world altogether with the movie. But then again, Howl's Moving Castle is like entering a different world entirely. :) What was your first impression of the book?

Oh, I read it last year.
I agree with you -- it's definitely different from the movie.
Let me reread it soon so that I can give detailed feedback. I can't seem to recall anything! Hehehehehe.

Read the book, too, after watching the movie. To be honest, I liked the movie better. Except for the last part, which I thought was kind of cheesy. But I forgive Miyazaki. I like the book's ending better. Typical understated British.:)

Did I mention that I have a crush on Howl? Movie Howl, not book Howl. With the Christian Bale voice, pre-Batman.:P

^Aw, Christian Bale's voice sounded sooooo good on Howl. :D

      *coughs*

Actually, even Diana Wynne Jones was surprised how different Hayao Miyazaki had treated the characters and certain events in the animated film. But she did say she liked Hayao Miyazaki's castle better. :D

I must have read Howl's Moving Castle three times. It belongs to my list of 'to be read again and again' despite my towering piles of TBR. I can't get over the idea that the characters have a lot more to say than what they are actually saying and it drives me crazy. It seems every time I read it again I read more. Weird, but so fun. Could this impression have something to do with the way British writers write. I can't pin it yet.

I'm not sure but it should be available in National Book Store branches. I got my copy at Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street last year during their sale.

The book was set in the fictional place called Ingary. There are also several places featured in the book like Wales, Porthaven, Kingsbury and Market Chipping. Of course, Wales is an actual country in Europe but some of the featured places are part of Howl's world. Do any of these places remind you of a real place?

Hi, Neal. Everyone is welcome to attend the FFP discussions. We'd be happy to have you on the 20th.

Because this will be your first (if ever), you can simply observe the discussion. We're not requiring members to share during the discussion proper, but we do encourage everyone to participate.

As for the budget, let's wait for the moderators to chime in. I'm not so sure about the exact details. Normally though, we just pay for what we order.

Hello there. We only made table reservation for the place. Since this is a restaurant in a hotel expect the prices to be higher than your regular mall restaurant. Though most of the items on the menu are actually enough for sharing (especially if you don't have a big appetite), I suggest you share the cost of your order with someone else. Often we only pay for what we order and there is no consumable charge in reserving the place for this discussion's venue. I would recommend that you also bring someone with you at the discussion. The more the merrier! :)

      Hope this helps.

    Hi, Neal!

Welcome! To join the discussion, just bring yourself to the venue, mingle with members and have fun! You are welcome to bring a friend. Or two. :P

As far as I know, you just pay for the food you order but let's have Lynn-nee give the price range of the venue.

If you are familiar with the story, feel free to join the activities or observe. We will try to make sure all will participate so look forward to that. :)

    We look forward meeting you.

Really enjoyed chatting about a favorite book and favorite characters with fellow bookworms. Flippers outdid themselves again. The rooftop venue overlooking the deteriorating grand vista of Manila was superb.

Despite the discussion and having read the book three times, I still wonder though:

    1. Why is Howl such an enduring popular character?
    2. Why do so many readers want to marry him or have a crush on him despite him being a cad?
    3. Are the sequels any good seeing as how Howl, Sophie and Calcifer only play minor characters in them?

'Di pa rin ako over sa discussion, haha.

Hello, maydi! It was great to see you again!

      1. He's a study in contradictions, I think. You think that he's superficial because he's vain, but deep inside, he's very complex.
      2. It probably has something to do with Howl being an enigma. Maybe girls are fascinated with the idea that they can figure him out.
      3. I'm reading one of the sequels, House of Many Ways, and I find it somewhat better than the first book.

Yes, you're right! Even Howl does not totally understand himself, given his frequent slithering out of making decisions (yun pala, a part of him is scheming).
*Sigh* Started reading Castle in the Air last night-- I thought I'd grow bored with it quickly because there's no Howl or Sophie (yet!) but before I knew it the whimsical writing and light tone had already carried me on to chapter 6.

Why do you say House of Many Ways is better? Better writing? More interesting plot?

It's more mysterious, Mitch. The writing is the same of course, given the nature of Jones's whimsical narrative. But the element of mystery is more pervasive in the book. You know that something bad is going to happen.
