July 2012 discussion: Ernest Cline's "Ready Player One"

    Save Changes Cancel

Come join us on July 28 as the Flippers tackle the vey geeky, 80s obesessed, dystopian best seller "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. The discussion will be held at Cafe 80s at the MC Home Depot complex along Julia Vargas Avenue at 2pm.

Book swap theme is any science fiction book. Preferrably dystopian. Attire for the event is casual chic. Preferrably 80s chic. *Wink*!

374 pages so medium length book. Pero it was a comfortable read to me (kasi I'm a scifi fan naman in the first place), so daling basahin. :)

I found to be the most easily digestible sci-fi I've read. Also, the most fun!

I noticed that it reads like a movie. In particular, a summer blockbuster hit. Di masyadong masakit sa ulo.

Kelangan i-reread ko talaga ito. Medyo nakalimutan ko na. And buti na lang Rhett is just a text away to explain some of the 80s references.

But I agree that it's a quick read though.

Wikipedia on RP1 lists the pop culture references in the book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ready_Player_One

TVTropes also list some common tropes and other winks: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Literature/ReadyPlayerOne?from=Main.ReadyPlayerOne

This book is just filled with 80s nostalgia. Having grown during that era, RPO became quite personal for me. How about you? What is it about that era that made it so awesome? Or so baduy? :)

The 80s were a blur to me! I grew up too soon! Hehehehe.

Anyway, it was awesome for the following reasons (and these are probably the same reasons why the 80s were so baduy, but in a good way):

      - Voltes V -- still one of the greatest contributions made by the Japanese
      - the bands with the big hair
      - tsunami double cobra hairdos
      - That's Entertainment, T.O.D.A.S., Iskul Bukol, Lovingly Yours Helen, Penthouse Live
      - the early songs of Michael Jackson

I'm more of a 90's child rather than of the 80's (I was too young to remember anything of significance; the most of the 80s I remember were in the later part na, the post-1986 EDSA revolution stuff). That's why I appreciated the geek references more in RP1 than 80s references.

That said, the following are what I love most about the 80s:

      - Cartoons (of course, I was in grade school then), particularly Transformers (as in there was a time in my life that I know ALL there is about the franchise - ask the quiz night people), Voltron: Defenders of the Universe (aka the Lion), The Real Ghostbusters, Bravestarr, Superfriends, Daimos, My Little Pony, Rainbow Bright, Care Bears, and Candy Candy, and I almost forgot, Flying House and Superbook!

      - Iskul Bukol, Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang, John en Marsha, Manok ni San Pedro, Sic o' Clock News, TODAS, Eye to Eye, Alf, Small Wonders (Vickie!), WWF, Airwolf, McGuyver, Batibot (I'm not really a Sesame Street kid), Bioman, Maskman, Shaider, and of course, Uncle Bob's Lucky 7 Club

      - For movies? I watched many of my favorite 80s movies (Back to the Future series, Terminator, etc.) as an adult. Except for Star Wars, kasi one the earliest memories I had was that someone (my brother?) borrowed a betamax copy of Star Wars (along with with a copy of the 1st Wrestlemania) for a marathon. Anyway, here as some of the movies I remember actually watching in the theater: Shake, Rattle & Roll (the first one, with Herbert Bautista & Alma Moreno), The Money Tree, Once Upon a Time, Ninja Kids, Inday Bote, and lots of other similar Regal films gems

      sige ako na nga din:

TV: Saturday Fun Machine (RPN 9, 8AM to 12 noon): Andy LeBeau (The Gary Coleman Show), Fraggle Rock, Shirt Tales, Great Space Coaster (with Gary Gnu), Space Ghost, tapos napalitan yung iba, Galtar and the Golden Lance, Bravestarr, The Gobots. Kulit Bulilit, Voltron, The New Zoo Review (with Henrietta Hippo, an owl, and a frog--forgot their names) on IBC 13. GMA7 has Sesame Street, Uncle Bob's Lucky 7 Club, Silverhawks, Thundercats in the afternoon. Anong channel ba yung Transformers? Channel 9 din yata. Later on, Knights of the Magical Light on ABSCBN. Channel 9 showed comic strip with the mini-monsters, tigersharks, a frog that raps. Punky Brewster, Charles in Charge, Small Wonder, Misfits of Science, Ating Alamin (with Gerry Geronimo), News Watch (with Harry Gasser), Flor de Luna at Anna Liza, Yagit.

Movies (including movies on tv): Superman I, II, II, IV, Rocky, Over the Top, Rambo (my dad's a stallone fan), Zapped, ET. Almost every James Bond film (my parents are big fans) on betamax. We don't go out to see movies regularly. I remember watching ET on the big screen. Became big movie fan in the 1990s, when we had a vhs and it was easy to rent. Also, it was in the 1990s when we first got cable.

The Eighties were awesome for all the reasons stated above. But mostly because I was that geeky teen playing Dungeons and Dragons, reading Comic books and playing 8 bit graphics videogames. Just like James Halliday.

I'm a 90's child too and agree to most of what Marie posted. I'll just add another thing, Ultraman! The 3-minute time limit frustrated me to no end but I still watched it.

I also enjoyed the geek references but more so the video game references. The novel was set in an MMORPG scenario (the OASIS parts anyway) and I can relate to it and the protagonist's experiences on leveling his character, questing, collect loot, magic items, etc. since i'm an MMO player as well.

This felt more like a video game-themed novel for me which is one of the reasons why I found this such an enjoyable read.
