Ay oo nga pala... let's get to know each other.

They're doing this at bookay and so I just realized we've never had a thread to just introduce ourselves to the other Flippers. I'll submit mine later. Basta hindi ako lalaki like some people used to think before I put up my profile pic.

Looking forward to getting to know you better.

Since I'm the new kid, I better be the first. Lemme see... my name's Marie, and I'm a bookaholic (lahat naman yata tayo right?). I'm a full-time grad student muna ngayon kasi dapat tutukan ko daw yung thesis ko muna at di daw ako matapos-tapos dun (hay...). Anyway, I don't really know if I have specific genres na gusto ko, pero I'm usually attracted to scifi, fantasy (pero not necessarily YA, pa-minsan-minsan lang), non-fiction (science, history, tech, biographies, etc.), adventure (lalo na yung mga man vs. nature, but not thrillers), comics & graphic novels (neil gaiman, alan moore... mangas if I could get a complete series), humor (terry prachett is my fave nowadays), romance (especially after reading something technical... to clean up the palate kumbaga [grin]).. teka mahaba na ito, basta suffice to say, if it has words, I'll probably read them. :)

Talagang gradschool ang usapan, ha? sige, aamin na ko. this is my 10th year sa M.A. I have to finish 2 papers for my INC penalty courses, pass a foreign language exam, and finish writing and defend my thesis by May 2008, WHILE working fulltime (as in 8am to 5pm) as a writer 5 days a week.

The only time i get to read my own books is during the 15 minutes in the morning that i spend in the bathroom while making a "go." sorry, too much info ba?

Ahh... I'm not a grad student yet. I'm still suffering as an undergrad, designing whenever possible to add to my portfolio. But whether I have free time or not, I read, read, read (Preferably fiction and fantasy and sometimes manga) and listen to music on the side! I enjoy writing whatever when I'm stressed (don't know why). I have a couple of stories done and waiting to be published. :D

@geek and proud: Nope, di ako physics major (I wish!). MS remote sensing ang kinukuha ko - kaya blackbody yung handle ko, from Planack's law of blackbody radiation, which is one of the major bases sa field of study ko (pero you already know that, kaya nga natanong mo right?:) ).

Haha. The only thing I remember about Planck during my traumatic physics subject in college is his law on the duality of light (wave versus particle- tama ba?). I dare not tread in the world of physics although when I read Hawking's "Brief History of Time" I was amazed at how he simplified such seemingly complex ideas. One of my favorite popular science books of all time.

From my Facebook profile: Book buyer, chocolate muncher, on and off fatkins dieter, impulse shopper, bag collector, cat hater, day dreamer, school bus/mommy car driver, toast master, George Clooney admirer, island hopper, life lover, joy giver, seasonal writer, mosaic maker, domestic diva wannabe, recovering coke (the black liquid) addict, middle child, scrap book nut, spa chick, grammar police, Jesus freak.

And to add to theme of masters studies, I started my masters 2000. I'm a compre exam and thesis project away from graduating, but just can't find the inertia.

As for books, super eclectic collection; can't seem to finish loading them here sa shelfari. Sizable collection of fiction, more than half still unread. A combination of best sellers, friends' recos, and booksale cheap finds. Non-fiction books cover topics such as domestic diva pursuits like home decorating, crafts, culinaria; management and leadership; biographies; writing; photography; art; fashion; and resources for my freelance corporate training gigs; etc. etc. I hope to live long enough to read 'em all.

Before moving to this cornfield in the Midwest, I was a special education teacher. I like working with children with mental disabilities and autism. Mas grabe, mas masaya. Tried teaching preschoolers too but didn't enjoy that as much as my sped kids. Had a wonderful but short-lived teaching career in the university where i got my bachelors, and where I struggled to finish my Masters. I decided to give in to my laziness and give up on my thesis. Then we had to move here, in the cornfields where they make crop circles and have alien abductions. Cross my heart, hope to die.

I'm a stay-at-home-wife with no intentions of becoming a mom. I have a bazillion hours to read which sounds ideal except when the depression and isolation kicks in. So I go out and volunteer in a special school here. We're going to the Special Olympics in May and that's really cool.

I love graphic novels and children's literature especially the ones with art. I love Dr. Seuss. I like happy endings most of the time and I will usually just read straight-prose-fiction when someone recommends it strongly to me. I don't want to waste my time picking out something that I end up hating. Can't get back those hours, you know? I also discovered that I don't like reading the blurbs on the back cover. It un-motivates me from reading the book.

FFP is my favorite group. It's actually the only one I read regularly and the only one I respond to. Thanks Island Hopper for starting it and being so good about keeping the discussions rolling! Yey! Gold star for you!

Strict adherent of the duality of life and career. I hold considerable expertise in the art of assuming normal human conversation and presence, when the real thoughts are in the opposite direction a hundred miles away. Avid school/regulations-restricted/concentration camp hater. Dreamer without practical direction. I read everything except chick-lit, Stephenie Meyer and similars, and romance books with covers graced by lovers pouring gallons of saliva on each other.

ILoveUFL's claims on depression and isolation are true.I had my time during this wonderful summer vacation, spending 9-to-5 sessions with only books, books, books. But I guess living only in the mind makes it snap. The book-and-self scenario was great, but the nights were terrible. Kaya gratifying burden ang pressures ng paggraduate at reality ng buhay-Maynila, to hopefully revert me back to the balanced robot most self-help books recommend.

Hopeful purpose is as Einstein (paborito ng lahat ng taong nagkukunwaring may talino iquote si Einstein) claimed: To know God's thoughts, the rest are mere details.

I am a researcher who works in government. Reading is a passion since childhood. I live in the suburbs and at my age, I'd rather stay home, sit on my favorite chair and read a book. I hope I could read all the books I bought recently before another attack of the book buying attack.

Kilala na ako ni islandhopper; we were classmates in an exclusive girls' school (formerly colored pink along EDSA).

Speaking of masters, I am business masters graduate from the school where Romulo Neri used to teach! =)
I am a master-of-all-trades having worked in various corporations dealing in retail, mall operations, real estate development, information technology, banking and finance in various positions in marketing, advertising, business development, operation, sales and human resource. But I am a frustrated artist, architect, writer, and ballerina. My passions are traveling and reading. I just set up my own company called ArteSana, producing specialty journals. (A shameless plug, my travel journals "Passport" are now available in some bookstores and retail outlets in malls)

I usually read fiction. My favorite genres are classics (French & English novels) and children books. BUT I read all kinds of novels...bestsellers, mystery, history, romance (sometimes) and travelogues Presently, I am reading Japanese novels. I want to read more modern Filipino novels.

I'm from Cebu and came to Cali as a teenager. I'm an ICU & PACU nurse. Yes, dalawa ang job ko but none of them are full time. :-) That gives me more time to spend reading and engaging in my other hobbies which include diving, surfing (the water & the net too), traveling, SLEEPING, trying out new places to eat, needlecraft, hanging out @ coffee shops, watching foreign & indie films, attending plays (no matter if its a cheap college production) & indulging in spa treatments. :-D I'm trying to learn Japanese & Spanish @ the same time (totally crazy coz sometimes I mix them up in my head). I'm a horrible cook, I hate doing laundry & throwing out the garbage. I've been known to prefer sleeping to eating & once slept for 18 hrs straight, my roommate thought I overdosed on sleeping pills (which I don't take BTW. ;-P)

Let's see ... born in the Philippines, left at 2 1/2 yrs old, grew up in Africa, now in the East Coast, USA. Work full-time, soccer/baseball mom during the weekends. Collections/hobbies: books (of course), writing journals and notebooks (someday I'll fill them all in with words), calligraphy, pens, photography, needlecrafts (crochet and knitting mostly), on a life-long search for the perfect handbag-tote, travelling, lounging on the beach (that's where I catch up on my reading).
I want to go back to the Philippines, and tour the country, as much as to discover, rediscover and connect back with the homeland, but also to introduce the country to the family ... hopefully before I get too old ...

My name's Eka. Am an incoming senior at the Philippine Science High School, from where I barely passed Chem and Math5. I don't even wanna think about my Physics and Research subjects yet. Am also getting ready for the UPCAT and ACET. Am from Antipolo, meaning I spend around three hours of my day just getting to and from my school in Quezon City. As you can see from my username, am a big fan of Rhett Butler from 'Gone With The Wind' and Mr. Darcy from 'Pride and Prejudice'. Am an aspiring surgeon, but I cried during our Bio frog dissection. Uber-nakakaawa yung mga frogs, I mean, they were still alive/awake while being pithed. They should take that out of the curriculum. But I loved it when we had to dissect a pig's heart. XD

hi karen... Vincent Van Gogh made it his life's calling to paint sunflowers, sunflowers and sunflowers! You should read some of his letters. I don't know if there's a book available pero i did read some at the local library, yung malalaking art books. It's so sad pero so enlightening. I especially love how he likens death to a vehicle to the stars, which he says is our final home... sabi nya, cancer(or other diseases for that matter) could be seen as a train or locomotive or other motorized transport to our final destination while dying old, in your sleep could be something like walking the entire trip... Van Gogh's exact words is much lovelier than my paraphrases... wala lang, rambler talaga ako...

Everyone (including my grandma) calls me kates. I actually started reading late in life, having fallen for a voracious reader who subsequently left me two months after with nothing but Misery (the Stephen King novel, how ironic is that). I decided to read and read and read until i can win him back with my endless repertoire of quotes from Borges, H.James and all his favorite philosophers. But by the time I was ready to wow him, he was already unfortunately married and i decided to, well, just continue reading. I guess reading acted as a coping mechanism (weird but true) and I think I still haven't gotten over him because after almost 10 years, I'm still reading :)

I read everything but i especially like fiction and lately, i'm on the lookout for things that will blow my mind away. Marquez did that for me, Murakami, some Eco, Borges, Dreiser, and Henry Miller but right now, reading has just been oh-so-sweet and oh-so-pleasurable in that Sunday afternoon rain kind of thing. I will try to read 120 Days of Sodom and will think of the writings in the most literal of context just to get that rush... in the meantime, any suggestions? :)

I guess like any word, Flips can have different connotations to different people. At its most harmless, it's just a short cut for the word Filipino. I was using it in the spirit that it was used for that now defunct magazine by Jessica Zafra and Roby Alampay, that magazine about Filipinos and how we are going to dominate the world. Plus, I just have to beg literary license. The opportunity to alliterate was irresistible.

Books: I like books about books, art fiction, historical mysteries, children's picture books (especially postmodern picture books), Tintin comics, YA novels, some fantasy (usually YA, never hardcore fantasy), some chicklit and romance, and comic serials (Calvin, Peanuts, Rose is Rose, Cathy, etc)... Just check out my shelf to see what I'm reading :D

Hello (which I would like to pronounce as "ha'low" for the same reason I write "sweeshsweesh" in my blog entries)!
      I'm momipoyo, the etymology of which goes back to my high school days/ my otaku days; I suggest you do not call me momipoyo in real life it would just sound like zonked language. I read books based on recommendations. I have no particular genre that I stick to, for now I'm just trying to finish my reading list composed primarily of classics. I also love works by Haruki Murakami, Neil Gaiman and Ian McEwan. I'm a relatively new book lover. My time is mostly spent trying to seriously study, struggle in tennis (am a complete beginner), read lit and manga, write and watch dramas online ][;;
I'm not that fond of reading chicklit and Nicolas Sparks type of novels, although I read some of them out of curiosity (maybe it's just a matter of preference ne? but there are moments when I enjoy reading them ^^;). I haven't tried reading John Grisham or Tom Clancy before, they don't appeal to me for some reason. I tend to judge a book by its cover (marketing!), this is why I trust recommendations better than my own judgment in buying books worth PhP 500++.
random: I'm still at a loss why Twilight is such a big hit, on par with my confusion in finding VK popular in the anime world.

    Bagong flipper.

E.J. here, 22, going on 23 June 24. (Regalo ko. Asan na. XD)

Like the front of my Shelfari profile says, the three genre I enjoy reading most are Science Fiction (Grabbing every Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, Niven, and Greg Bear book in every 2ndhand book store I can find), Fantasy (I NEED MORE DISCWORLD AND XANTH PLS) and Medical Thrillers (Read most of Robin Cook and a bit of Tess Gerritsen, but oddly no Michael Palmer). Then comes everything else.

I have NOT read any of the main LOTR series, nor have I seen any of the movies (ako na lang ata sa buong mundo). Except for The Hobbit. I intend to... Someday...

I... do not care for Bookmooch. Give my books away? WHY? :D They are wonderful and lovely and - most importantly - MINE. I will never have a book I do not want - just books I do not read.

Oh, I have a livejournal: ejia_arath03.livejournal.com *stays away from friendster and multiply like they were the plague*

hi, eija. but you DON'T have to give your books away! buy 10-15 books from Booksale or Recto and use them for your inventory. in return for shipping them out for moochers, you get to mooch the books you have been drooling about for the longest time because either they were too expensive or they are not available here yet/anymore.

Aside from reading, im addicted to cooking, and caffeine & nicotine. I rarely watch tv.I like watching movies alone. Pag nasa mood, i do gardening.Kaya puro cactus ang plants ko kasi if ever i dont feel like taking care of them, steady lang sila.haha I love dogs, cats and lizards.

At obviously, madaldal ako.

Pero usually, recommended by friends.

Saya! ^_^

Hello, I was supposed to do this when I first got the notice but my computer chose that moment to conk out on me. Anyway, my name is Shani and I am a certifiable book fiend. Heehee. When I'm bored, I'll pretty much read everything but I find that I'm getting more and more selective about what I read (precious little reading time these days). I usually like to read contemporary literary fiction but I've also been known to read science fiction, science, history, politics, comedy, fantasy and the classic. I'm no means a book snob but I just really love books that are well-written. I like authors whose words make you want to read aloud and whose plots/essays are so amazingly crafted that it usually takes them so long to write it. Fine, I'm a little bit of a book snob but I also admit to having read Dan Brown :)

joke lang pinkadink. ^^ it's just a joke among us that there's conflict between "Paolo Coelho shallows" and Saussure-spewing book snobs represented by the Herr/Heil Czar. we just do it to liven up the threads.

Well, I'm Donnah...that's double N and with an H... Like everybody else I'm a Bookworm...I also like watching anime, drawing and scribbling... I dig books by Stephen KIng, Sydney Sheldon and Johanna Lindsey...As you can see from my eclectic choice of authors, my taste range from horror to romance to suspense/thriller... I like watching CSI and heroes and lately i've been reading the graphic novel version of heroes on NBS... I'm an undergrad and a Bio student and I am currently focused on drawing my plates for my Plant morpho class...

But basically, I love reading...I can read one paperback (hearts of atlantis thick) in one day with breaks...when i read Johanna Lindsey books it only takes me an hour or so...I can read really fast...hahahaha... My addiction to books even had me reading an entire volume of I WONDER WHY Grolier when i was in gradeschool...( geek!)

I started reading books when I was 11 years old when my classmates are all bookworms so i try to borrow some of there books and I started to collect books. I love to play piano and I just discover my skill last April 2008. The truth is I hate listen to modern music and I love listening to classical and mellow musics. I have two brother and sister and they love modern music witch I hate the most.

I'm Joyce to my family, and Joycee to my closest friends. A 20-year old university student, majoring in Economics, and minoring in fields of Statistics and Geography.

I am a student, news writer, and freelance photographer by day, and a penniless procrastinator, writer, and coffee addict by night.

When I'm not pursuing my life as a studenti, I tend to look around the map and plan my most anticipated world tour with my mom in the near future.

People say I'm weird for collecting teaspoons and tea sets.

I'm an avid sports fan. I religiously follow Formula One, NBA, MBL, and tennis. I'm a big fan of Kimi Raikkonen, Rafael Nadal, the Boston Celtics, and the Boston Red Sox.

I love watching Project Runway, House, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Amazing Race, and CSI.

I already posted my introduction yesterday but couldn't find it today. hehehe. Anyway, I'm a 48 year old Mom of 4 gorgeous children ( 2girls ages 23 and 19, and 2 boys ages 22 and 15) and a wife of a great, wonderful man- I say he's wonderful because he supports my love of books-he doesn't mind when I ignore him everytime I am engrossed in my book and doesn't complain when i buy books even when we are on a tight budget.

Aside from my love of books, I cross-stitch, tend to my plants, do my housechores, cook ( not the best cook), work in an office and love taking care of my family(-that's what I do best). I started reading in high school when I still have my passion for drawing - it's been a long time-...I like to read romance, action packed, inspirational, paranormal books, etc...the list could go on and on...

My books are my treasure. I am content to curl up in bed with my favorite book on rainy days.

So that's all! It's nice to know that there's this group who feels about books the way I do. Nice meeting you all!!!
