Who wants to join an FFP Readathon?

Hello! Part of the hilarious fun we had at the Bookmoochers' Party last night was discussing the possibility of holding our very own 24 Hour Readathon.

    The idea is this:

    - we hold a readathon, open to both FFP members and non-members.
    - we make the readathon a fund-raising event. This means that we need to get publicity, aside from sponsors (c/o Blooey mostly).
    - sponsors will donate books instead of money. They'll pledge a certain number of books for a certain number of pages read by the readathon participants. (e.g. for every 100 pages read, a sponsor will donate 10 books)
    - our tentative beneficiaries: schools/children of Marikina (because Czar has contacts there)
    - the readathon will be held in one place (tentatively at Capitan Moy in Marikina).
    - participants (or readers) can commit to the whole 24 hours or to just a portion of it (We're thinking of a minimum no. of hours, though, because we don't want people to just spend an hour there.)

    The question, now, is this:

Who would be interested to join the Readathon?

We're targetting around 50 readers, not all coming from FFP, of course. But all willing to commit to reading for a good cause (naks).

Our tentative schedule for this is on January 12. This gives us enough time (hopefully) to organize everything, yet still take advantage of the tail end of the Christmas season.

Once we've estimated how many people are going to participate from FFP, we'll post another thread with the concrete mechanics and other details (which we are still working on).

    Let's make this happen!

Lastly, please answer the following multiple choice question. This will help us determine whether we will lock you up with Czar and Marie in case the media come interviewing us during the read-a-thon:

Why is FFP holding the Read-a-thon?

    A) Wala lang.
    B) Because we can.
    C) Because we want to advocate reading and, at the same time, make a concrete difference in the lives of our fellow citizens.

Aw, I loved that segment from Sesame Street, Czar.:)

But of course readathons can end global hunger, poverty, corruption, war, global warming, and obesity! They also pave the way for the cures for cancer, headaches, and the common cold. Any Flipper knows that.

could people just participate online if they can't make it to the physical readathon?
updates could be done every hour, like the Dewey readathon?

Hi, Ruby. We're still trying to figure out how to include readers who can't make it to the actual venue. But I think the focus will be on the participants who'll actually be there. More on this, however, when we finalize the mechanics.:)

I dunno if I can read for 24 hours. But I can do logistics. I can also bring my cattle prod for drowsy readers (I wanted to bring a whip but Fantaghiro convinced me that a cattle prod is more humane :) ).

    Great idea, Honey!

    C. Since it is a Saturday, I'll see what I can do to get my Loyola Book Club members to join. If I require it, that would be 30 boys to add to the list. Maybe I can find some more in school, including co-teachers.

PS: Did you actually recommend cattle prods instead of whips?

Wouldn't lash marks look more interesting than prod burns?

Hey, Joel. Maybe you can ask just the really hard-core LBC members to join. Wouldn't want to stress out your boys. Co-teachers are definitely welcome.:)

And yes, I prefer the cattle prods to whips.:P
