"What I want for Christmas is..." Exchange Gift 2009

Due to insistent public demand ("Marie, kelan mo sisimulan ang monito monita? Marie, October na, magsimula ka na ng thread! Marie...yadda, yadda, yadda.." heheheh), I'm bringing this back!

To make myself headache free, I want to make it less convoluted than last year. The rules are simple:

    - Limit: 500 - 999 pesos per gift.

    - I will randomly choose the monito/monita - baby pairing. I will post it here. In short, the only secret this time will be the gift itself.

    - Post your wishlist here. You can also make your wishlist in another site (blog, bookmooch, wherever) and post the link here. Monito/monita, please get something from your baby's wishlist. No ifs, no buts. Babies, please make your wishlist realistically attainable given our budget, as well as "find-able" within the available book stores in the metro.

    - If your partner is far away and the only choice you have is to mail it to him/her, you can consider the postage cost to be inclusive of the llimit.

    - Post to this thread if you want to join the activity. The deadliest deadline is on November 15, 2009. I'll get all the names of people by the morning of Nov. 16 and post the list of partner by lunchtime the same day.

    - I suggest you mail your packages by November to avoid the Christmas rush. Givers who can give their gifts personally can do so during the Christmas party (or if they're too excited, earlier than that).

    - ADDENDUM: No eBooks and fake/xerox copied books

    - Email me if you have violent reactions at maricana@gmail.com.

    Yun na!

Ako din, Marie! Prepare ko na wish list ko! So excited!

Marie, pwede bang mag-add ng mga particulars sa wish list? For example, "No mass market paperbacks please." Nothing against MMPs and all, but medyo nahihirapan na akong magbasa ng maliliit na font. Hehehe.

But why take the thrill out of not knowing your monito/monita just yet? Hindi ba pwedeng ma-retain yun? Just asking.

Let's set the date for the party early on, para ma-clear out na agad ng mga Flippers ang Xmas sked nila. Also the venue (sana bahay). Kung okay sa inyo, pwede sa bahay ng parents ko sa Cinco Hermanos. I think it's quite accessible to most people; it's just at the back of Blue Ridge in Katipunan Rd, QC. (Czar, it's on your side of EDSA, malapit na malapit sa iyo.)

Umpisahan ko na, Marie, ha. (Halata bang sobrang excited. Hehehe.)

    1. The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson
    2. The Wings of the Dove - Henry James
    3. Any novel by Anthony Trollope (I'm drooling at the latest editions of Oxford)

Based on maydayeve's suggestion, I've added a few more:

    4. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
    5. I Capture the Castle - Dodie Smith
    6. Howl's Moving Castle - Diana Wynne Jones

Sana trade paperback. Finding it a lot more difficult to read mass market paperbacks recently. Must be my age.

      Dearest Mommy/Daddy,

I've posted my wishlist in my Bookmooch page (in the above link). But here are the books that I really, really want above anything else (at least for now). Used copies are okay, and paperbacks are okay too, but I hope they are in good condition. Oh, and get me as many in my wishlist as you possibly can, please? Thanks!

      - Pride and Prejudice, but it must be the Oxford World's Classics edition (http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice-Oxford-Worlds-Classics/dp/0192802380), new or like new. It's annoying to have all the other Austen books of this series except for P&P. It's almost always in paperback and it is cheap - I bought the other books for 99pesos apiece.

      - Trailblazer South East Asia: The Graphic Guide (Paperback) (http://www.amazon.com/Trailblazer-South-East-Asia-Graphic/dp/1873756674). Would badly need this next year since my battered copy of Let's Go! Southeast Asia is outdated already. Any good readable copy will do.

      - Nancy Madore's Enchanted Again (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0373605218). :-)

      - Any book by Edward R. Tufte, but especially The Visual Display of Quantitative Information (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0961392142). Any good readable copy will also do. These are textbooks, so maybe somewhere a booksale branch may have them...?

That's it for now, Mommy/Daddy. Might update this later too.

      Thanks!

      Marie :)

I'm lusting for this cover of the Walter Benjamin book: http://printeresting.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/david-pearson-book-cover.jpg
Bobby Chin's cookbook on my shelfari wish list shelf is high on my drool list.
My shelves are also bereft of any Nigella Lawsons, Ina Gartens, Tyler Florences, and Jamie Olivers.

I'll also be happy with a Fully Booked discount card or an eklataklat leather book case. :) http://aklateklat.multiply.com/photos/album/18/NEW_banded_book_jackets#photo=1

Conditions: TPBs are great! used or new does not matter to me. a little knocked up and yellowed is fine too; just as long as the pages are not wavy due to water damage. no molds. no animal bites. readable pages.

So lurkers are free to join, only if they unlurk themselves & attend discussions and/or have one of the more established Flipper vouch for you.

Yup, please do add more books, and if you want, you can also specify the condition (e.g. no mass-market paperbacks, new books, used books are okay, etc.) . We do have a limit cost for the gift (see my above post) as well as a plea that these be "findable". I'm not sure we can find a hardcover copy of 2666 at less that a thousand pesos, right? ;-)

It will be up to your monito/monita how he/she will send the gift to you. The cheapest method of sending books abroad, based on my experience, is via surface mail (a reasonable method imho, kasi about 90% of the time, people get the package in about 2 weeks time, basta lng the package will not exceed 2kg). So baka ok pa naman.

So tama ba? The monito/monita will get to keep your book, as long as he/she send you the dust jacket? Cool!

We have a limit on the price of the book, Geze. And many bookstores here don't have the hardbound 2666 (mostly because it's sold out).

Quoting from the original post of the thread:

Yes. You can get/send as many books that you like as long as the total cost of the gift (inclusive of other cost such as wrapping, courier, etc.) is within the limit. :)

      @Marie,Welski,

      Me gots questyons,

If you wish to get more and try to get as high as PHP 999. then one should put more buks noh.But you might get disappointed if you gets onli worth PHP PHP 500.

Kaya I suggest to narrow the margin within PHP 50. like between PHP 700 to PHP 750 then it's a challenget to noh.

      Marie

Hmm, ideally you're right Geze. But based on my experience last year tells me that it's difficult to fix your gift at a very specific price (say at Php500 like last year), especially if your baby's wishlisted books are few and/or are expensive (for example, I placed about 200 books in my wishlist last year and my ninang still had a hard time finding them). Plus, the additional costs may further limit the number of books that you may buy for your baby (for example, say I fix the price to Php500 only. If I have to send it via courier, I need to allot at least Php150 for that cost; and that's just locally). You ask, how about putting the limit at more than Php500 then? Then I'm not sure if more people can join in the fun, such as those without income as well as students.

@Geze, thanks for bringing that up, so at least the givers are aware of that risk -- that they might get less than they give out.

I think that won't be a problem for most though. We're aware naman that we might get less in value than what we give out, but we're still happy to get something from our wishlist. Plus it's more fun to give than to receive, diba? Also fun to hunt for others' wish items.

@Baby Hannah - if you stil have other books you wish to have this Christmas kindly add it to your wishlist. Most of the ones you listed do not make common appearances at Booksale, so it is possible that i will pick you a brand new copy and that limits the number of books i can send you.

would anyone here like to barter any title from my wishlist (second-hand copies would do but preferably TPB) for a copy of Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood? It's HB but has a hideous price-mark heinously scribbled on the front cover :((( i got it from a second-hand bookstore at a ridiculous price. anyway, if anyone's interested, let me know. "exchange gifts" din tayo sa christmas party :)

here's a photo of the book:

@maydayeve: i still have the Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill (HB). If you're still interested to trade with 13th Tale. Any chance you'll be coming to manila soon? Lemme know :)

Yehey!! Daghang Salamat, Marie!!! No probs with the delay :-)

Naku, di ko pa nabili ang wishlist ni Hanna! Went to SM NBS na wala doon, kailangan nang mag shop sa Fully Book or Powerbooks! Ay temptation ito!

@Jan! You're welcome! Ive finished The 20th Century Ghosts na, eager to read HSB. Joe Hill is the son of Stephen King pala? Ive found a book by Stephen King with a short story entitle Joe Hill ...

Kwesi, some of the books on your shelfari wishlist indicate that you have read them. Does it mean that you no longer need to get copies?

Whoops, I haven't fixed my list since I have not been doing much reading. BUT for Skirmish, please check my wish list at Shelfari. More likely, I'll update it within this week. I am also adding Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown's mystery novels in the mix (I had Cat's Eyewitness and and Catch as Cat Can already). Cat Lit will be much appreciated.

Speaking of which, who was again the lady I lent my Cat Crimes books? May I ask if I can have them back?
