October Book Discussion: Pride and Prejudice and Flippers

Nope, not another "quirky" classic, though I'm sure the personalities involved are quirky...

November's Book Discussion will be on:

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
    AND
one Jane Austen spin-off (preferably a spin-off of "Pride and Prejudice", but not necessarily)

    Moderator: fantaghiro23
Venue: Raul Roco Garden and Library, Antipolo (will post exact address and directions on how to get there by Tuesday)
    Date: November 21

Hi, Honey! This is actually quite challenging for me, since I don't really like Austen. I guess that's why I don't seem able to complete all those best book lists. Can I read "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"? By the way, I prefer the 24th.

I'm reading Pride & Prejudice & Zombies for the offshoot book, Peter. Would like to know what you think about it.

So far I'm free on both the 17th and the 24th. I guess... the 24th?

Hello, Marie! I haven't started it yet. (Actually, every time I read Austen, including this offshoot book, I cringe at all the chismis going on.) Basta, I plan to start and finish this one.

      Lol!

Any novel of the Regency and Victorian era (and I'm saying that it's not just romances), will always have gossip and intrigues inter-meshed in them. So does that mean you can't bear reading novels of that genre? ;-)

Sige, I look forward to comparing notes with you. Harharhar!

Oo nga, Marie. Anyway, it seems that I can't avoid reading P&P. I just reread the main post by Honey and noticed that it says P&P AND a spinoff. I thought I can get away with reading just the spinoff. Sheesh.

Oh... i don't think i'm available for any of those dates. for one, we're attending my cousin's wedding on the 17th. Then my parents will be here for a vacation only until November 1, so chances are we'll be spending all our available time with them.

But 'll still schedule reading the the Jane Austen book and the spin off, so i'll be with you and the rest of the Flippers in "book spirit". ;-]

Can we list down here offshoot book suggestions? To make it easy for others to look for copies.

    Bridget Jones' Diary is one.
I bought Pride and Prescience, Or, A Truth Universally Acknowledged, A Mr. & Mrs. Darcy Mystery (I'm not yet sure kung kaya kong basahin).
I should start soon reading Carol Shield's Jane Austen bio.

Here are the book spin-offs/offshoots from Jane Austen:

Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler
    Darcy's Story by Janet Aylmer
Amanda Grange's series of "diaries" from Austen heroes (Mr. Darcy's Diary, Mr. Knightley's Diary, Captain Wentworth's Diary, etc.)
    Austenland by Shannon Hale
The Pemberley Variations by Abigail Reynolds (Impulse and Initiative, The Last Man int he World, Without Reserve, etc.)
The Pemberley Chronicles by Rebecca Ann Collins (Netherfield Park Revisited, The Ladies of Longbourne, Mr. Darcy's Daughters, etc.)
Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict and Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler
Fitzwilliam Darcy Gentleman series by Pamela Aidan (An Assembly Such As This, These Three Remain, Duty and Desire)
Becoming Jane: The Wit and Wisdom of Jane Austen by Anne Newgarden
Jane Austen's Guide to Good Manners: Compliments, Charades & Horrible Blunders by Josephine Ross
The Jane Austen Handbook: A Sensible Yet Elegant Guide to Her World by Margaret C. Sullivan
Lost in Austen: Create Your Own Jane Austen Adventure by Emma Campbell Webster
The Man Who Loved Jane Austen by Sally Smith O'Rourke
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

I've also seen several mysteries based on Jane Austen characters in Book Sale, but I can't remember the series title. Not sure if it's the same as the Mr. & Mrs. Darcy Mysteries, Ihop.

Everyone, feel free to add.:) And indicate na rin which spin-off you'll be reading.

Mike, Peter: how about thinking of it as a guide for men on how not to get caught by marriage-hungry women?

Or how about trying to pick which of the Bennet girls is YOUR type?

Or, if you prefer, which of the Bennet girls would you be? Like, really?:)

Then again, you can read the spin-off first and see if it encourages you to read the original.

I finished Carol Shield's Jane Austen bio. It's uhm, well, I wish I could say that it made me want to read P&P again. I read it last year and did not dislike nor like it. I'm not sure I can take a re-read, but might just to find out what I missed the first time around. However, I'm more inclined to read another novel instead -- Emma and/or Northanger Abbey.

Was about to start The Jane Austen Book Club, but it seems necessary to read her other novels.

Tentative Aye from me, as venue has not yet been decided... This will be my first moderated book discussion in years, and the first time to meet all of you, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can attend. I also love reading your blog, Honey, so I really hope to join this meeting.

Are discussion venues/refreshments themed to match the book? If so, a proper British high tea would be lovely for this one. There is a tea shop/cafe in Fort Bonifacio called Numa, though I'm not sure if this is geographically suited to most of the Flippers attending.

My search for an English garden in the city led me to the Raul Roco Garden & Library. Based on the description of my friend and some online articles, it sounds lovely!!! It has a reading room. Just the kind of place the flippers would love to visit. And guess what! I talked to Mrs. Sonya Roco, the widow of the late Senator, and she is inviting us to have our group discussion there. Normally, she would charge rent, but she said she would let us use the place FOR FREE! The only catch is that maybe we can promote the place to our friends via word of mouth and blogs. She really wants to position the place as a READING ROOM, a place for art events, e.g. poetry reading, etc.

There are indoor and outdoor options to suit our purposes.

I know I am throwing a monkey's wrench on our plans, but this opportunity seems like something too hard to pass up on. So, I'm asking the group to consider.

We still have time to react and make changes. We haven't finalized yet with Black Soup. (Sana, Honey, sorry I'm messing up your plans.)

The monkey's wrench would cause 2 major logistical issues:
-- Food (no resto there) BUT I am willing to slave in the kitchen to prepare the sandwiches and salad and all the paraphernalia. I am willing to buy the scones and cookies, etc, etc.
-- Transpo (this is in Antipolo) -- This is the harder part, because if I'm going to help set up the place, I (and whoever wants to help) need to be there earlier than the others so I can't help transport people.

    What do you guys think?

Here are articles and pics. Am hoping to get more pics to post.

Hi! Checked out the place and, considering the appropriateness of the venue, the requests of people, and the dedication of Gege in finding the English garden, I'm seriously considering moving the venue to the Raul Roco Garden & Library in Antipolo.

The major concern, though, is the transpo. So, this is what Ihop, Marie, and I have come up with so far:

      - we meet up at Katipunan lunchtime and have lunch together.
      - we go by convoy to Antipolo using Ihop's and my car. Jan will follow, too, with her car.
      - we hold the discussion from 2-5:30.
      - we leave by 5:30 so we can make it back to Manila by 6 or so, in time for Blooey and others to make it to the pyrolympics thing or for us to go get some substantial dinner.

Food, then, will have to be potluck.

      So far,
Ihop and I will bring sandwiches and tea
      Marie can bring pastries

Other things that can be brought are:
      scones
      butter or other fruit spreads
      more cakes
      drinks (but not soda)

Attire, still in Regency costume. Though, if it the whole thing can't be managed, then at least an accessory will be fine, too.

In any case, will post more specific directions on how to get there, but as much as possible, we want to go there together to facilitate transportation. Hope this is still ok with people. Post if there are any problems. We'll try to work everything out.

Regarding the food, we discovered this value for money caterer, CCME Foodstuff. We're thinking we can order some items there, because it seems more convenient and economical.

      Their website is here: http://www.homemadefoodstuff.com/index.html

We'll ask them if they can customize a meal for us, but if they can't, we'll just order the fish croquettes, chicken relleno, stuffed tomatoes with eggs, and potato salad. Then, Marie, Ihop, and I will just take care of preparing the sandwiches, buying the pastries, and bringing the tea. Then, we'll split the cost. So far, it's still looking like P300/person, but with more food.:D

      What you think?

Fanta, I'm not satisfied with the look of the ankle-length dress I'm doing. If I can't repair it, I'll probably wear something suitable for a tea party na lang. Sayang nga eh, if I just knew beforehand that it's not going to go well, I would've opt for those classy wide-brimmed feather hats instead of the bonnet I'm making (which is cute but will going to clash with the said tea party dress). :P

I am a bit scared about the costume thing, although i think i can manage a hat or a bonnet. I don't know how to go to the place but if I can meet with the others at Katipunan, that would be fine. I also have a car and I'd like to offer a ride in case we all don't fit in the two cars. Oh and I hope someone would put up the final details for next saturday. Hi! Ihop and I checked out the venue today. It isn't exactly an English garden, and the Reading Room was closed when we went there, but they have this charming Japanese house, complete with a kitchen (with a stove, sink, and ref) and a nice bathroom that we can use for the discussion. The doors open out to the garden, so it has a nice nature-y feel. We figure that since both the Japanese and English like tea, it's good enough.:P Also, it's free.

We also checked out Numa at the Fort, mostly to get a feel for the English tea presentation. It was nice, but we're sure we can improve upon it.

So, it is on, ladies and gents! We shall have us a smashing tea party!

Oh, the Roco compound would be perfect for pictorials in our costumes, so it would be great if we could come dressed up in some way. Need not be too elaborate, but at least a touch of Regency attire will go a long way.:)

      Pzas Lady

      (commute to Katipunan)
the best is to take the LRT 2 station (the one that runs all the way from Recto to Santolan) ; get off at Katipunan station. take note it is between Santolan terminal station and Anonas. From Katipunan, get off at the North exit and walk to Mini-stop, then take the tricycle. fare is P15.

      (by cab)
tell the taxi to take the White Plains road if you're coming from Edsa.
from Cubao, tell the driver to take Xavierville road.

    Here's our menu for Saturday:

    1) Scones (c/o Ihop)
    2) Assorted Tea Sandwiches (c/o Ihop)
    3) Other Breads/Pastries (c/o Marie)
*we'll have cream and jam with the scones and breads, too

    4) Potato Salad (c/o Czar)
    5) Fish Croquettes (c/o Fantaghiro)
    6) Chicken Relleno (c/o Fantaghiro)
    7) Stuffed Tomatoes (c/o Fantaghiro)

    8) Earl Grey Tea and other Black tea varieties (c/o Ihop and Fantaghiro)
    9) Iced tea

We'll be bringing the china and silver for our tea party, too. We've decided to take care of bringing the food, then just splitting the cost among everyone. Seems cheaper and more convenient than potluck kasi. Tentatively, it'll amount to the usual P300/person. Hope that's ok.

Oh, in case you're the soda type and not the tea type, you'll have to bring your own soda.:)

    Directions to Roco Garden:

    From Marcos Highway:

Take Sumulong Highway. Take the looooooooooooong winding road past MLDC, Assumption, etc. Go past the intersection that leads to the church. At the tri-road intersection, take the left one, which is Ynares St. Turn right after Unciano Hospital. At the first corner, turn right to the road leading to Bosay Resort. Right before the resort, there is a rust colored gate with a sign that says: Maogmang Lugar. That's it. Text/ring me so we can have somebody open the gate.

    From Ortigas Avenue Extension:

Take the loooong road towards Antipolo. At the tri-road intersection, take the right one, which is Ynares St. Turn right after Unciano Hospital. At the first corner, turn right to the road leading to Bosay Resort. Right before the resort, there is a rust colored gate with a sign that says: Maogmang Lugar. That's it. Text/ring me so we can have somebody open the gate.

When lost, just ask for directions to Bosay Resort.

Commuting Directions from Edsa corner Ortigas.

Take bus (G-Liner or RRCG) to Taytay. Alight at Tikling and take a jeep which has the signboard Antipolo-Tanay. Ask driver to let you get off at Unciano Hospital. From there, tell tricycle driver to take you to Bosay Resort. Right before the resort, there is a rust colored gate with a sign that says: Maogmang Lugar. That's it. Text/ring me so we can have somebody open the gate.

I find it to be a sarcastic observation that pertains (in reverse) to women more than men, I think. I see it as a statement establishing the main goal of women (in general) during that time: to marry well.

Since the statement proposes that a rich, single guy is in want for a wife, therefore, a single woman, especially those in dire straits -- e.g. middle class, no connections, aging -- should set out to pursue these single men

He comes off as amusing, but it wears off when you realize he's not a good father or husband, as he can't rein in his wife or his wayward daughters and prefers to distance himself from family affairs.

Even when Lydia runs off he doesnt make much of an effort to find her, it's the Gardiners -- and Mr. Darcy-- that step in to save the family from scandal.

Mr. Bennet loves Elizabeth most since she is the closest to him and his favorite while Jane was the Eldest, he prides himself and is assured that she will be able to have a good future due mainly to her looks, he was a good father only to these two. He fails as a father to the rest of his children because he became disappointed that he never got any sons despite trying having one after the first two daughters and it was with regret that he never thought of providing for them until it was too late to do so thinking that he will still be able to have a son.

As a husband, I believe he was a good husband in the beginning of their relationship since he was besotted with his wife who was lovely when she was younger that was why he married her but later he realize that all she has was her looks. He later learned to distance himself from her and her silliness as much as possible. Divorce was out of the question as it was unheard of to do that even in their small circle.

As a family man he was agood provider because he was still able to provide enough for them. Just enough to even hire a small staff of servants.

As a father - yes and no. yes, he provides well for his family, but he comes off as weak in not showing a firm hand in guiding his children.

As a husband - he exercised maximum tolerance with his wife, but it doesnt look good either.

As a man - yes he is a good man, although not one i will write glowing praises. No exciting things happening for him there.

Wickham isn't practical. A man who buries himself in debt in each place he ever stays in, knowing he has no capacity to pay, then runs away from all his debtors isn't a practical man. A man who can't concoct a lie that won't have the possibility of being checked out isn't a practical man. Practical people are smarter. He's just vain and stupid.

Wickham is practical for most of the book. Being in debt means he has no honor; doesn't mean he isn't smart. And he knew he was safe with his story; at it's barest, it's really just his word against Darcy. And he knew that Darcy wouldn't dare mention his connection with Wickham to the whole wide world, that is, without mentioning that incident with his sister.

The most practical person in the book was Charlotte Lucas. But that's quite obvious naman.

Neither. Mr. Darcy was proud and insanely rich that he doesn't want to associate himself with people of the lower class except for the people who work on his estate but that is out of duty and affection for their loyalty. Elizabeth, on the other hand, was practical out of necessity because of the circumstances of her family. But she has her own prejudices when it comes with prideful people such as Darcy that despite her initial impression of his looks, she was repelled by his manner of treating people like her not worthy of being in his circle.

      Austen says it all...

"Without thinking highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object; it was the only honourable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happiness, must be their pleasantest preservative from want."

It's unfortunate women then had to settle for what's "available", not for what [or who] they want, and I really can't blame Charlotte, but I'm glad things have changed since then.

My offshoot book, The Jane Austen Club, offers a theory. Charlotte is a lesbian, so she does not care really whom she marries. The book further theorizes that Jane Austen was not even aware that Charlotte is gay.

Charlotte Lucas took the opportunity to take Mr. Collins as her husband because it is the most logical thing to do for her if she wants to secure her future even if she does not love Mr. Collins becasue if she let this opportunity pass, she will live as an old maid and lose face in the society for it (read: a fodder for the gossip mill and be regarded with pity forever). It was a minor blessing that she was able to tolerate Mr. Collins because she was able to make sure that she spent as little time with him as possible making her marriage and living with him that much more bearable.

Mary was unfortunately an underdeveloped character. I think she was even dislike for her being too self-absorbed and believed too much of herself for being "talented" when she clearly has none especially in singing. I guess this was her way to cope with/compete with her two likable elder sister and much more attractive younger siblings.

Actually, I think she was developed enough inasmuch as Austen wanted to develop her. I think her purpose was to provide a foil for the two older sisters, and to show that there are also levels of silliness: Lydia's is the really actively flighty and superficial active kind, Kitty is the passive counterpart of Lydia's, and Mary is the pseudo-intellectual kind.

I guess as Mr. Bennett got more and more annoyed with his wife, the more he distanced himself from household affairs, and the less parental guidance the younger ones got.

Mr. Bennet loved both his first elder daughters more especially Elizabeth since he reminded her so much of himself in most ways. Unfortunately as his marriage turns for the bad, he learned to ignore the rest of the children by avoiding them as much as possible or insulting them at their silly ways especially since they seem to have taken a lot of their mannerisms and simple-mindedness from their mother. With the exception of Mary who seem more like a man who is struggling in a woman's body by trying to be accomplished but unfortunately failing at that as well. ^^"

The perspective of the novel is from Lizzy (and Austen), who is middle class, hence the social satire is limited to the middle and upper classes. When servants are mentioned, they're simple, happy folk that are grateful to the upper class

I found the romance good but bitin. The interaction between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy is limited, and for all of Lizzy's/Austen's verbosity, she clams up at the key romantic moments. I am also not sold on Mr. Darcy's abrupt personality transformation, although there are ways to justify it.

I loved it as romance the first time I read it. The more times I read it, I still loved the romance, but appreciated the satire more. Initially, I did want more action between Lizzy and Darcy. Nevertheless, I realized that I was still "kilig" despite the restraint in writing, and I guess it's that very restraint that aids my reaction. Not everything is given me, so I'm left to my own imagination. Which can be very vivid indeed.

Then again, Colin Firth does help a lot.:D

In a Jane Austen Universe, the Flippers met one Saturday, 21 November 2009 for tea and scones at Raul Roco Garden. Pride and Prejudice was the subject of their gossip.

I hoped for a Pride and Prejudice discussion to rival the ones of the Jane Austen Book Club movie. My expectations were met and then some. Although the book the movie was adapted from was trashed by Ihop, Jan, and Fantaghiro23, the movie was entertaining enough that surpassing it meant the Flips Flipping Pages (FFP) just had one of the liveliest and engaging face-to-face discussions since we started doing these two years ago.

To make any such get-together a success, characters are important—those discussing and being discussed. From the talk boards, one can already get a feel that Flippers are no insipid characters afraid to voice opinions and ask provocative questions. In Pride and Prejudice, we found a wealth of interesting characters, whose strict rules of engagement made for a fun puzzle for us book club members. Jane Austen herself was an enigma: attractive, smart, fun-loving, with and extremely astute understanding of human nature and behavior, yet strangely aloof from the attentions of the gentlemen of her time. Her works dwelt much—critically, lovingly, cynically... you decide—on the pursuit of wives and husbands, yet Austen remained single until her death at age 41.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife... Is it romantic or otherwise?" – Mod Fantaghiro23 begins the discussion.

But I am getting ahead of the narrative. From start to finish, the FFP Jane Austen Day bore all the elements of a Regency social outing. I arrived at a little past 12 at the Petron gas station next to La Vista gate along Katipunan and met with Fantaghiro, Marie, Ajie, Don Tads, Czar, Fredda, and GnP. Minus Don Tads and GnP (who had to beg off from attending the discussion because of family affairs—though GnP made sure to share with us how he found Pride and Prejuidce a trial to read. There was all that talking, I think I heard him say. “They never get to the point!” was more or less his sentiment, I recall.) we made our way to Antipolo in Czar's and Fantaghiro's cars.

At the Raul Roco Garden in Maogmanglugar, Antipolo, Lizzie Bennet welcomed us and offered us refreshments in a shady spot... Ah, wait, it was just Marie in a full Regency regalia. She had on a white empire-waist summer dress, and her hair was held up by a wide headband. I was so envious!

Islandhopper also had a touch of Regency, a flamboyant one, on her. She was wearing this black flowery clip, the kind that ladies wore to balls. She was at the garden an hour earlier so she can have time to lay out a sumptuous Regency table (think tea, scones, tea sandwiches, fish croquettes, and stuffed tomatoes, all arranged on dainty cups, china, and silverware) in readiness for our not-so Regency appetite.

Sabin Figaro and Psaz-lady had also arrived before us. Soon, Jan and Oel joined us (Jan also sported a feathery hair accent piece). Islandhopper introduced us to Jeeves: our fly in the wall with a camera, he said. We walked deeper into an almost-English Garden towards a Japanese-inspired pavilion. Imagine this setting: flowers and greenery, bamboo fountains, fresh air, the sound of books fluttering, the air of eager minds getting ready to confide, clash, and compromise.

Before us was a sunken table. On the table were our copies of Pride and Prejudice and, of course, our plates of food. At almost 3pm, Fantaghiro officially began the book club's Pride and Prejudice discussion.

    Highlights
    - Video showing of the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. Nicely edited to one hour by Marie.
    - The life and times of Jane Austen. Her works. Her family and social life. Her love life.
    - History of the publication of Pride and Prejudice.
    - Historical background of the Georgian and Regency years
    - Questions, opinions, observations about Pride and Prejudice.

Many thought P&P;P was a sarcastic commentary of the marriage mart culture of the Georgian and Regency eras. Marriages were little more than business transactions.

According to Fantaghiro, the first line throws into light the idea that P&P is more than a romance.

Mrs Bennet is like Anabelle Rama, palengkera, tacky, but focused on securing a good future for her daughters.

Depth of book was called into question. Comments were that the story was fluffy and that it revolved around only a few people in a very little part of England. Politics and world affairs were completely ignored. But how does one define depth? Is it only the ability to articulate the big picture? On the other hand, Austen had an uncanny ability to see right through human behavior of the people of her class.

Ihop found the book dry, when she wanted very much to enjoy the book. “Depth? Kebs. Juicy details... Where?!”

Sabin was surprised that he liked P&P, especially when he realized that it was not just a romance novel. His favorite character was Mr Bennet.

Fredda theorized that Mr Bennet was Jane Austen's model of herself within the book. Someone who is perfectly aware of what's going on...

To the question of who is more practical, Darcy or Elizabeth, the answers were divided. Ajie said it was Elizabeth, who was gutsy and outspoken even when in love. Psaz and I felt it was Darcy (though I can't now remember why. I think I confused the ability to save the day with practicality.) Fantaghiro agreed with Ajie; she said she suspected that Elizabeth may not be as in love with Darcy as he is to her and that her decision to marry him was greatly influenced by his station in life.

To the question of whether Elizabeth truly loved Darcy, some Flippers said that from the start there was stirring of the heart in Elizabeth. Were it not for her hurt pride from Darcy's tactless comments about her beauty, she may have admitted readily na type nya rin si kuya. That he is well-educated and rich gave Darcy additional pogi points in Elizabeth's eyes.

Marie asked, If Elizabeth was so practical, why was she so turned off by Charlotte's choice? I believe that up to now none has satisfactorily answered this.

Ihop had this to say about Elizabeth's character: Elizabeth is a bitch. We like her. But she's a bitch.

Conduct over morals - The upper class people of the Regency time seemed more ashamed over inappropriate behavior than over immoral behavior. Fantaghiro wondered why. Is the strict code of conduct their way of keeping the violence of their times in check? Because contrary to impression we may have formed from reading P&P, the regency years were turmultuous and characterized by wars between England and France.

To the question of why Jane Austen is a hit now, the answers were far out: It's a Penguin conspiracy! Kasi wala na silang (readers, writers, publishers) magawa sa buhay nila. Nanghahalungkat na naman (ng bagong i-bibida) . Popularity of Chicklits, of which some say Jane Austen is the grandmother. Because Darcy is obviously more in love with Elizabeth—and girls DIG that. Ang gwapo ni Colin Firth!

    - Discussion of Pride and Prejudice spinoff, fan fiction, unofficial sequels.

Jane Austen's Guide to Dating Lauren Henderson – one tip from the book: If you love someone, make it clear that you do.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith, Jane Austen – zombie scenes were just spliced in.

Bridget Jones Diary by Helen Fielding

The Bio of Jane Austen by Carol Shields

Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler – unanimous decision: yeck. Ihop: the author must have slept with the publisher for the book get published.

Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler

For me, whether we now live in a Jane Austen Universe or not is immaterial. For that Saturday, we Flippers were in a world of our own, thinking, talking, eating Jane Austen. Whether Pride and Prejudice is a social satire, not a romance, girls still swoon at just the thought of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. Lizzie and Darcy may be the model of restraint and civilized conduct on the outside, but behind closed doors…? Oh my, my imagination is working overtime. That's romance enough for me =P.

By the way, the Raul Roco Garden was a heavenly place, perfect for weddings, parties, corporate activities… Kulang lang ng lights sa gabi.
