I'd like to see more novels and less themes.

I'd like to tackle poetry because I hate poetry but would like to learn more about it.

    A business/leadership book.

Self-help. And let Czar moderate. *Kidding.*

I'm thinking of a mixed CD of each Flipper's Top-5 desert island songs complete with the reason(s) why they picked the songs. Then each of us can have a copy of this so we can get to know the different musical tastes of the Flippers.

Honestly, I think PiVNOJ is a bigger audiophile than me. He would make a great mod!

Plus (if everything will go as planned), we may compile the Top 5 Desert Island songs per Flipper which will be reproduced as an mp3 CD to be given those attending the discussion. It may take some time to compile the songs from the Flippers. Will talk to him about the mechanics of this.

Are we forgetting something? Shouldn't moderators supposed to dictate whatever they want to discuss? Hence, shouldn't we nominate people as moderators instead? Ok, I'll start.

I nominate Sabin Figaro, maybe for something science fiction-y?

Pivnoj and/or Fredda, maybe for something published during the beat era or of a philo tone?

Aka Shy, maybe something romantic or emotional?

I agree about the sabin Figaro idea. about time we tackled an SF classic! although didn't we do that na with Brave New World?
as for the romantic thingy, how about Judith Mc Naught or Johanna Lindsey?? (*blinks her small chinky short-eyelashed not-Bambi-ish-at-all-but-very sardonic-eyes*)

sa Philo or business leadership/self help books, why don't we discuss Confucius or Mencius or some other Eastern thinker? it would be great to see how relevant their views are in this modern-post-modern world!

a play by shakespeare---] awesome idea. I recommend something tragic. something that will make us all wanna go home alone afterwards mulling over the fate and follies of humanity or make us wanna drink liquor afterwards discussing our existential problems

a Southeast Asian novel---] good, magaling daw yung Ananta Toer. also why notF. Sionil Jose's Tree or Dog-eaters by Jessican Hagedorn

a Russian Classic---] im not gonna rain on your parade, you guys. i recommend instead fathers and Sons by Turgenev (though im not sure if this will be a very relevant theme for all of us). it's like 1/6th the length of War and Peace!

a contemporary lit book set during WWII----] A FAREWELL TO ARMS by Hemingway!!!

I agree, Cecille. I think we discuss too much fiction. Let's read Thomas Friedman, William Shirer maybe even a Malcolm Gladwell. Maybe we can discuss a bio/autobio of someone inspiring (e.g. Gandhi, Cory, Mandela, Einstein).

      posted 3 months ago. ( reply )
    • islandhopper flips pages

      islandhopper flips pages (edited)

Do we really discuss fiction too much? Going by the list of 2008, 2 of 8 books were nonfic. And for 2009, it's 4 of 11, not counting Dr. Seuss. I surmise that's a pretty good average considering our members' shelves and annual reading lists. Our just-bought and just-read lists are mostly fiction based on the threads.

Especially if we compare ourselves to other reading groups, I think we're pretty diverse. I think we make it a point to make our themes as varied as possible. A lot of reading groups only discuss fiction.

Anyway, a bio would be nice too. Would be a challenge to find one we all would like. But if a mod would volunteer, he/she gets to choose the person(s) to be discussed.

@ IHOP- now that I see the stats we racked up for 2008/09, I agree with you. Our books are quite diverse. Sorry for the rash response.

@ Fredda- yeah! Let's discuss Hemingway! But please wag lang "The Old Man and the Sea". I personally would love "A Moveable Feast" (his memoirs in 1920s Paris), "A Farewell to Arms" (as you suggested) and/or "Death in the Afternoon" (I love bull fighting!)

Oh, I have a specific suggestion for poetry. Anvil launched a book last month entitled Crowns and Oranges. It's an anthology of works of distinguished young Filipino poets. (e.g. Larry Ypil, Mikael Co, Carljoe Javier, etc.) One of the published poets is my good friend, Anina Abola. I'd really love it if we could discuss this book for poetry for the following reasons (my friend being the least of them):

    1) We can invite some of the contributors to do readings for us or talk about their craft/process. I've invited some of them before here in school and i know how to get in touch with them.
    2) It could be our way of promoting Philippine poetry, Philippine books, AND Philippine publishing. We'd be doing something concrete for our literature. And, since a lot of us blog about our book discussions, we don't just reach the audience we have during the face-to-face, but also the readers of our different blogs.
    3) It would be a great way for us to learn more about the contemporary Philippine lit scene. Or at least, get to know the young Filipino poets who, in all honesty, I find immensely talented. They deserve a greater audience.

Disclaimer: I have no connections with Anvil. Nor will my friend get any money out of additional sales because, it turns out, they pay the contributors a tiny one-time amount. (I actually laughed when I heard how much my friend got paid.) I just want to do something to support these young Filipino writers and their art.

Downside, though, is that the book costs almost P700. But, maybe we can find ways around that. I'm hopeful.

Marie! Music themed books! My thought's exactly. I agree with fanta also. :) Where can I get this book tho? Meron na ba sa National?

More Poetry, Biography and PHILIPPINE LIT in TAGALOG is what I wish for. I don't fully understand poetry but I think it's important for us to discuss a few of them. My favorite poets aren't so difficult to read anyway. Look for Richard Brautigan, Mark Strand and Jeffrey McDaniel. For Filipino poets, there's a lot. Angela Manalang-Gloria, Krip Yuson, Gemino Abad--The new poets: Larry Ypil, Mikael Co, etc. :)

I'm biased for biographies but anyway, mas importante sakin yung philippine literature in Tagalog. Many of us had them in school but never read them for fun. Most of them are really amazing books! :) And my real reason: I'm beginning to be ashamed that I don't read as many Filipino authors. :( Say niyo? Kaya?

Oh, and has anyone ever read Wilfrido Nolledo? I'm trying to find his work. :( Please let me know if you've seen him around in bookshelves. Thanks!

Ihop, in case it's difficult to get the 12 moderators for the entire year, we can target at least the moderators and books for the first half of the year muna. At least 6 people lang muna ang hahanapin.

Then maybe we can finalize the moderators for the second half by April, at the latest. That way, we can also leave room for new members who might crop up during the early part of next year.

    * Book ABOUT our National Artists - CCP came up with two books on the National Artists of the Philippines
    * Book that won the Palanca Awards - they just gave out the 2009 awards, we could probably proceed from there
    * Book about Philippine politics - since the 2010 election is just around the corner. Note that it's not about Philippine POLITICIANS, but Phil politics.
    * Book about the current global economic crisis/depression - which crisis will definitely stretch into next year
    * Book about ongoing peace negotiations - with the MILF and/or NDF

@Blooey - Oel's currently too busy with work to check out this thread but I sent him an SMS, game daw siya. :)

So Ms. IHop, me and Oel are okay to moderate a discussion on "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon next year. No tentative month for now...

Need a volunteer for logistics po, thinking of holding the discussion at Asian Rare Books, if the owners (forgot their names) are ok with it. But any other venue suggestions are welcome. :)

Hey, I have lots of suggestions for the science book discussion:

      1. The Selfish Gene
      2. DNA
      3. The Elegant Universe
      4. The Fabric of the Cosmos
      5. Dr. Tatiana's Sex Advice for All Creation

I highly recommend the last one. The chapters are in the form of letters sent by different species of animals seeking advice for their sexual/reproductive patterns and behaviors. The letters are so funny and insightful. Dr. Tatiana's answers are quite witty and very informative.

Peter- medyo touchy if we discuss Dawkins because some of his writings go against a lot of core principles of theism. However, handled properly, I think the discussion can be fruitful.

@ Czar and Fanta- Marie will definitely wear the daddy pants pag kami nag-discuss. I'm very submissive. :P Corny pag kami ang co-mods. I still go for the Czar-Marie tandem. Mas maraming tension and the discussion will be more animated. Plus we can see the issues of the book from two standpoints: the scientific and the philosophical. Di ba?

Teka lang, di ba si Cecile and mag momod? Bakit nalipat sa akin?

i also like the M&M tandem and am curious about its "S&M" aspect. i mean about Marie being the dominant one with Mike's admission that he is submissive. parang si Mareng Winnie Monsod snubbing and taking potshots at Mike. until finally she realizes the folly of her ways, denounces her profession and engineering in general, makes pa-cute Bambi eyes at Mike and the whole thing ends up with an onstage hug.

I like also if Cecile and GnP moderate. Cecile wil explore the kikay feminine, cute wholesome, mythical, creative, imaginative powerful aspect of Science while GnP vainly tries to steer it to ts cold logico-scientific rationality. in the end the whole group will realize that despite man and woman's biological differences they still perfectly complement each other. ^^

Fredda, I think it's the other way around. Cecille's going to do the logico-scientific rationale thing (but not cold, imho), while it's GnP who'll do the "kikay, feminine cute wholesome, mythical, creative, imaginative powerful aspect of Science". Remember who's the fan of Watsons, my dear.

Grabe naman kayo, kung kani-kanino na lang ako pinapartner. I sound like a loose woman. Ok naman ako kahit kami ni Cecille na lang eh (I can almost see those thoughts whirring in everyone's mind when I said that last one, hehehehe).

    Book / Theme Suggestions:

    1. A book by Marcus Buckingham - preferably The One Thing You Need to Know
    2. The Kite Runner
    3. Any book that would make us eat and travel =D --- Travel Location: Kinabuhayan Cafe in Quezon or Sonya's Garden in Tagaytay --- this could be done overnight =) ... I'm still thinking what book would fit best in this category.
    4. Something about BEES and the really good stuff they make --- then we could go to Ilog Maria Bee Farm in Silang, Cavite and have a tour there or something.
    5. Anything that has to do with the psychology of Marketing. Blue Ocean Strategy maybe.
    6. All about money and financial literacy. --- And we could invite a financial guru to share some tips on how we could better handle our money and save a lot more of it.

fallenangel- we already did this when we discussed "Zsa Zsa Zaturnah" last year. But it would be cool if we could do another one that is non-superhero oriented (Maus, Blankets, Jimmy Corrigan, etc.). The only difficulty is that graphic novels, aside from being pricey, are quite hard to find in bookstores here.

gege has a very good point about dean's december,
i just remember it as awayan ng estranged couple and endless moping and bitching and groaning by
an old man who got cuckolded (lahat naman yata ng plot ni Bellow may ganito!)
but he IS a fantastic stylist, won't you agree?
for me, Flaubert and DH Lawrence's literary torch has been passed to Nabokov and then Bellow.
i dont think there is any other wrter writing in such superb literary style as Bellow right now.
Updike tries very hard but can't hack it.maybe Pynchon.

Cost me a little over $20 for a paperback - but the paper was nice heavy white, the book larger than the trade sized pbs here, so I think it was worth it!

      2. What postmodern narrative techniques are exemplified by the SV series? Discuss the impact of these techniques on the apparent readability of the narrative.

Was at Fully Booked Boni High last Saturday and was pleased to see a lot of international edition copies of Umberto Eco's "Name of the Rose" priced at Php 335. For the longest time I have been contemplating on upgrading my dog-eared hand-me-down from the 80's but could not bear to spend Php600+ for a trade ppb. What I like about the international edition is that the paper is better than news print and the spine does not crease as much compared to other paperbacks (sorry, I'm a big fan of the book).

I mention all this because I suggest that we discuss the said book in 2010 (or in 2011 depending on the agreed schedule). It is a challenging read but is one of the most readable works of Eco. In addition, I have some Benedictine monk friends who have read the book whom I might be able to invite as resource person(s). They can talk about their lifestyle as semi contemplative monks (the setting of a book is a Benedictine monastery). Also we can visit the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat (San Beda Chapel) and The Minor Basilica of St. Sebastian- both of which are excellent examples of Gothic architecture. I know that this discussion might offend the sensibilities of some Flippers as we will unavoidably talk about religion but we can also view this discussion in the historical sense considering the background of the book.

Just had the impression that all they sell at Scholastic were books for kids. I might check it out. Any idea how much Marie paid for it? Thanks!

Mayday- hindi ako nakabili. Sayang. Will probably buy the international edition at Fully Booked. Tried looking for my old copy a while ago. Looks like I lent it to someone but it hasn't been returned yet. :-(

Has anyone checked out the winners' anthologies for that contest Fully Booked did for Filipino Fantasy and Sci-Fi/Speculative Fiction? The one where they got Neil Gaiman to choose the winners?

They're interesting/trippy. The Kris-Aquino-powered-spaceship short story, in particula,r was a source of guilty amusement. (I'd like some of whatever that writer was on, please.)

Is this the Philippine Graphic Fiction awards anthologies? Been seeing them in Fully Booked. Sounds very interesting!

I think the anthologies' title is/are "Expeditions". Two books: one for short stories/prose, another for graphic fiction. I thought the prose anthology was much more interesting.

Oh, I thought it's just a graphic fiction compilation. That's cool! Will check out Fully Booked then. Thanks for the tip Jeeves!
