    Hi everyone!

Please vote for your preferred date:

September 19 (which will coincide with the MIBF so by default we'll have it somewhere in MOA)

    or

    September 26th

i've pulled the book out of my shelf. a bit scared to re-read it. but will read it so i can be part of the group discussion in spirit.

won't attend. kailangang kumayod para may pambili ng books sa MIBF.

sana i can join you in the after party. pag may freebie, reserve for me, ha? :D

@IH - why? i'm having second thoughts about reading it tuloy. your reaction, plus that of jan's yesterday when we were reminded of the book. fyi, i had nightmares for a month after reading anne rice's "interview with a vampire". exacerbated by the fact that i am such a scaredy-cat with a wild imagination.

    A suggestion?

Why not just go to the MOA bookstores, MIBF & the Cavite bookstore (for some people, again) on the 19th? In short, let's just bookshop the whole day long that day (aray, ang bulsa kooo...).

Personally, I wouldn't be able to concentrate on a mere book meet when there's bargain book hunting to be done. :P

there's a whistlestop at jupiter, quite near that building where we'll be having the perfume-making seminar. then there's a starbucks right beside whistlestop. and a razon's a few meters away... yum...

there are a lot of options of restos where we can have the book discussion. i'd vote for whistlestop coz they've been open for just a few months, and not too many people (i hope!) have heard about their opening. the last time we were there (around May) soft opening pa lang nila. so hopefully, not too many people have gotten wind of their opening and we'll have a lot of space to do the discussion. but still do an ocular muna and check out the other restos there as well.

Jupiter has Dencio's as well. and Mickey's deli. Aristocrat. though these places are nearer Yamaha/Reposo than Paseo. Teriyaki Boy, Ineng's, and Singkit are at Petron Bel-Air.

The building where we're having the perfume-making is Buendia cor. Paseo, right?

Ooh, New Bombay! Budget-friendly I think - entrees are from P150-300.
Naan is around P70-P100 (depending on the type -- I prefer cheese naan) and we can share the dipping dishes!
A glass of lassi (plain, strawberry, rose) is around P80 I think.

And nice lighting, great interiors, lots of spices to get a whiff of, and quiet enough for us to hold our discussion in!

Ahhh... Mura ba sa New Bombay? O.o when my ex and i were still together parang hindi yata mura dun. Ewan baka nagbago na ngayon.

Mayron ding mga cheap at masarap, malasa, at mababangong pagkain na makikita sa Jupiter and near Jupiter St., which is P. Burgos:

      Jupiter St.:
      - Indian by Nature -

      P. Burgos (near Jupiter):
      - Ziggurat (Indian Fusion) -

      - The Filling Station
      (http://www.ourawesomeplanet.com/awesome/2007/08/filling-station.html)

And maybe if we go to an Indian Resto we can also try their HOOKAH too =D

When we go to "New Bombay" let's have a contest who can order his/her food using his/her best Apu (of The Simpsons fame) or Rajesh Kuthrapali (of Big Bang Theory) voice.

      Just a suggestion, guys :P

Seriously, good choice Blooey. It's been a while since I had good Indian food and I have been craving for it for some time. The last time I tried to satisfy my craving was a crappy Indian place in Retiro (near Lourdes Church; I think Fanta may have seen or eaten in this place). New Bombay is WAAAY better.

Somewhat off topic, but I want to take advantage of the meeting to give away some books and improve my mooch ratio.

Just for those who will attend, I want to mooch out new Penguin classics (the ones with the green cover) I just bought today at NBS. Newsprint pages. The cover is the thinnest that can still be called cardboard.

    Maximum 2 books per person.
Only for the meeting, because I don't want to spend on courier fees.
Reserve here, and I will enter the book into my inventory. Mooch, and I will smooch you back the point(s). That means the books are free.

Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray - reserved for Czar
    Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
    William Shakespeare, King Lear
William Shakespeare, The Tempest - reserved for Ajie
    William Shakespeare, Macbeth
William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
Mark Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - reserved for Czar
Little Women, Louisa May Alcott - reserved for Blooey

    Thanks!

@ Bloo: =) I know you guys kind of decided to go to New Bombay already ... But I was thinking ... Would it be possible for you to consider Ziggurat also? It's Indian Fusion (Indian, Mediterranean, Arabian, Egyptian) and their place is quite big. Food is pretty cheap too. Like Moussaka there is only Php 150, A serving of Hummus is about Php75, their breads ranges from Php10-75 only, Homemade Yogurt is Php85, Panna Cotta is Php60, Biryanis from Php180-380, and Salads starts at Php90.

for those who wanna have dinner at Hossein's Kebab
      afterwards im game!!!!
we can order snacks lng or soemthing relatively cheap
at New Bombay (the samosa is very filling)so we have
plenty of moolah to burn at Hossein's.
and we can just make tikim everyone else's order, hehehe

Hossein's food is truly sumptuous, though
when I ordered chikcken kebab dati may blood sa gitna
(not fully thawed out ang chicken)
yeah better than Arya or Kashmir, at malaki ang serving, good for 2 na po

      at Hussein's mejo overpriced po....
simple kebab meals at P400, they have the shish kebab and lamb kebab
(2 sticks na) good for two cuz lots of rice, for around P600.
ordinary dishes/viands at P500 up (not recommended)
im thinking for that price, it's better to try Indian food at Kashmir along Pasong Tamo
it's not a chowhound place to visit, para lng sa

I am soooooooooooooooooooo super mega ultra sobrang sobrang uber to the max sad i'll miss this. When I read Perfume many years ago, that's when I started wishing I had people to discuss books with. I've been pushing for this discussion, wanting to moderate it myself. But people pushed the foodie idea, which didn't quite meet my expectations, and I'm going to miss this. Si Marie kasi eh, sinabi pang wag nang i-discuss ang Perfume!! Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

And I didn't even get to write a review because of pesteng work. Waaaaaaaahhhhhhhh. Don't enjoy too much, guys.

But I hope you enjoy the game. Pinaghirapan ko yun.

Btw, went to Grasse kanina and it was a great place. No need to worry about overwhelming perfume scents in the air, they're all bottled. It's a nice cheery place with room to maneuver, nice staff (and owner), and looks like a fun workshop is in store for us. And they agreed to let us reschedule. Wanted to take photos to show you kaya lang confidential pala. PEro for the workshop proper pwede naman siguro

hope flippers are ok. yesterday was unbelievably terrible. i waded through flood from makati to pandacan yesterdayl glad i didn't fall into a manhole. blooey and dianne got stuck in deep flood; to get home they had to wade through chest/neck-high waters. houses were flooded in, including ours (for the first time in 20+ years). the news all over metro manila is very bad.

Di nagrereply si Czar sa texts. I'm worrying na.

Added: Czar finally replied. Said that their okay even if the flood there reached about 6 ft. Naging parang evac center daw ang bahay nila so mejo magulo pa rin hanggang ngaun.

@Marie - Oh, im glad he is ok. 6 ft! Heavens!!! As i was about to sleep last night in my comfortable bed, i thought of those in Metro Manila without even the comfort of their homes. God keep them safe.

I've informed our Visayas Ofc to donate any stuff we will find useful for the typhoon victims. We will have it ready tomorrow.

Welski, hope you enjoyed your trek. And yes, we are known for our great food! :) Just check that famous food blog, Market Manila. He has a lot of posts about Bacolod's yummies. As for the piaya, check out other varieties. There are mini ones that go so well with coffee. New piaya concoctions also include new flavors. If ever in Bacolod, check out the Showroom on Lacson Street where they have almost everything made here in Bacolod.

Maydayeve, sorry, for very late reply. I don't check in here often. Dulce gatas is milk candy served in tubs. It's more like a paste, really, that you spoon out. It's made from carabao's milk. Dee-lish!

Will check out todayVan Gogh is Bipolar. That's near or in UP Village. Wala sa theme, but Sana knows the owner. (As if merong rest owner si Sanang hindi kilala). And the interiors are designed by artists so... sige, I'll try it first before I add more comments.

Persepolis so cozy and nice for chatting, there were like 25 of us dati my classmates and I had a looong lunch there, BUT THE FOOD IS NOT GOOD.

King's Kebab- venue not conducive for talking, ung taas kasi looks cramped and no windows if I remember. makes one feel claustrophobic. food has deteriorated a lot.

let's choose katipunan. I'd volunteer my place sana but the aircon sadly won't be able to accomodate so many people.

no other place around here that I could think of.

I wonder if we can at Kopi Roti along Katipunan? how about Bo's Coffee in Katipunan?

ihop i dont think there's any place in Eastwood City where we can all hang out for the book club, but maybe El Pyrata their foods are not cheap (smoked salmon carpaccio for P350) (salad greens for P180) (sole fish for P380) but owner is Italian and friend said they have good pizza. I tried their smoked salmon carpaccio and salad, twas nice. it's sooo cozy there. the ambience is rustic woodsy type, the facade resembles a pirate ship and the inside is elegant. I thought before it's just a bar place w/ lousy food but im surprised that the food's nice.
there are many restaurants along Libis though.

and i really love the idea of Vangogh. hows the food there?

      posted 3 years ago. ( permalink )

I couldn't check out Perspolis (that's how it is spelled). When I passed, there were 3 lanes of cars trying to get the last remaining parking space.

Van Gogh is Bipolar is a charming, charming place. Has nothing to do with the theme, but it's perfect for a book club meeting. It opens at 6pm, so that means before that the place is ours if we reserve it. It can sit a maximum of 15 people. But if we exceed that, I guess we can just add stools. The food concept is this -- food that improve our moods, seratonin, dopamine churvanesses. Loved the Mel Gibson shots (dark choco in vodka), 125; and the Lamb and Salmon platter 1,100 for 4. Or given enough leadtime, the owner can prepare something special for us.

Kopi Roti might be big enough for us, if we take the outdoor area.

it ties in with our theme din cuz Van Gogh is sort of like an outcast like Grenouille and
he is French, too that lived in the countryside
      the food sounds GREAT!!!

AS FOR kopi roti, the area outside kasi- baka mainit dun and it's right beside the high way so may be a little noisy there.

Persepolis is perfect sana for bookclub discussion but the food is lousy.

Peter, in Van Gogh, they serve this Axl Rose egg shot. Soft boiled egg with a special sauce; my palate tells me the main ingredient of that concoction is knorr seasoning or soy sauce.

hindi siya weird health food. we had a hearty lunch of lamb chops and salmon belly with black rice. pero meron ngang potatoes, wheat pasta, and flowers.
except for the cooking and the washing of dishes, it's practically self service.
by the way, i'm not lobbying for it, ha?

marami pang options along katipunan. there is also that resto near shopping center. patio verde ba yun? but i don't know if the food's still good. quezon city is not really my playground, so please give more recos.

ah oo nga, sorry about the service of katre. we only found out later that the one who was supposed to take care of us, the owner and chef, had to have an emergency angioplasty on the day of our meeting, so the service sucked. they just didn't want to cancel on us at the last minute.

Van Gogh is Bipolar has exotic but very health yummy meals. It is reasonably priced (as low as P 99 - P400++ to share platters). Gege, Alma and Ajie can attest to this.

    http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Quezon-City-Philippines/van-gogh-is-bipolar/78957949878?ref=sgm

Czar, the service at Van Gogh is personalized. The owner is also the waiter and chef. The customers also takes part by writing down their orders and making the tab. It adds to the intimate charm of the resto. It feels that you are not inside a resto but a friend's house.

Aside from Van Gogh, we can also try Black Soup which is beside Van Gogh

    www.blacksoupcafe.multiply.com

Honey, I wanted to suggest this resto for November. It does not have a British ambiance. Has modern chic look to it but the owner can prepare a British menu (scones, biscuits, tea etc) for us. We can also have a film showing of Pride & Prejudice. Resto is owned by group of filmmakers. Menu is also very reasonable (P 80 -150). yummy as well.

If you choose of any of these restos, I can arrange with the owners to reserve the area( 2- 6 p.m.)and prepare a special menu for us.

Both are located in 154 Maginhawa St. QC near Bookay

Hi, Sana. Sounds good. I checked out other English gardens kasi, and seems like a lot of them are wedding venues. Hence, mahal. This might be a good option in case people prefer to hold the book discussion here in the Metro. Czar kasi also suggested Sonya's Garden in Tagaytay, though that would be a bit pricier.

Hey, Sana, is this also near Sancho's? It's a new churreria also in Maginhawa. My friend's sister owns it kasi. The food there is great! Very like Dulcinea, which isn't a surprise since the owner used to work for Dulcinea and hired the cooks and waiters of Dulcinea after it laid them off bec. of the change in management. Anyway, we can have dinner or churros and pastries there after the discussion.:)

I love Perfume!!!! It's a bit of magical realism but the pure crudeness and malice of the novel's theme is kinda seductive and keeps you reading til the end. Kinda like watching Pan's Labyrinth. It's violent, it's bloody, it's appalling, but you can't stop wanting for more. Grenouille is definitely one of the most unforgettable characters I've ever read. You can't help but sympathize to him even though he's actually like the monster of the novel. However, the writing style of Perfume cannot be readily appreciated by everyone. Some may find the novel boring and the sentences to dragging. But if you persevere and consider every word, the beauty of Perfume magnifies because of its sheer artistry. We should also commend the English translator of the novel since Perfume or Das Parfum is originally written in German. Whoever the translator is, he/she did a very good job!!!!

    Hi all!

The Perfume book discussion is going to be held in the Van Gogh is Bipolar restaurant. It is located in 154H (inner courtyard), Maginhawa Street, Sikatuna Village, Q.C. Meet time is 2pm-6pm. Please prepare 300 pesos for the food and drinks. The food's going to be hors de ouvres/pica-pica style (para walang ise-set na meal time na makakaistorbo pa sa discussion). You can order other food and drinks (e.g. softdrinks), pero a la carte na. There's going to be games and stuff prepared so be ready na lang. :)

Btw, Jetro had prepared a special menu just for the occasion (o divah?) called Murderer's Meal. Based on what I experienced the last time I went there, I'm sure it's going to be delicious. You have the option to order it for lunch (ahem, perfume-making group!) or if you're just really hungry.

Umm, ano pa ba... ah yes, nearly forgot to remind you guys to bring a book for the book swap. Actually, can I hazard a suggestion? Can we do a book swap on a specific theme? Say, the horror genre kaya? Or mahirap ba yung may theme pa?

    Recap

After the storm had passed we were finally able to push through with the discussion, although we had to cancel the perfume-making workshop as we forfeited our slot.

We were in for a big surprise at Van Gogh is Bipolar when we saw that Jetro had prepared an atmospheric discussion venue for us, complete with cushy mattress and pillows on the floor, and the place was lit up by the warm glow of candles (brownout kasi!)

After tucking into the tea and nibblies, we started with a sniff-off courtesy of Gege. The group was divided into two teams, team Sniff and team Whiff, who had to sniff their way across a variety of substances.

    Summary:

In the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift: an absolute sense of smell.
As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs.

But Grenouille’s genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and frest-cut wood.

Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the “ultimate perfume”—the scent of a beautiful young virgin.

    Film Adaptation

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,co-written and directed by Tom Tykwer, (who also composed the film score), was premiered in Germany on 14 September 2006.

As of October 2006, the film had received mixed reviews by critics. Reuters described the movie as “visually lush, fast-moving story”, stating as well that the director “has a sure sense of spectacle and, despite its faults, the movie maintains its queasy grip”.

“You may not savor it”, Roger Ebert wrote, “but you will not stop watching it, in horror and fascination.”

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 57% “Rotten” rating, quoting: “A kinetic visual feast with an antihero that’s impossible to feel sympathy for.”

The film was a financial success, especially in Europe, earning $135 million worldwide. However, it was deemed unmarketable for American audiences and released in a very limited number of theaters in North America, taking in a modest $2,223,293.

    Music inspired by the novel:

The song "Scentless Apprentice", by the American grunge band Nirvana, was inspired by Perfume. It appears on their 1993 album In Utero. The band's singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain often described the novel as one of his favorite books.

The song Herr Spiegelmann from the Portuguese gothic-doom metal band Moonspell contains an excerpt from the book.

The song "Red Head Girl" by French downtempo duo Air is inspired by Perfume.

The song "Du riechst so gut" by Rammstein was inspired by the book, which is one of lead singer Till Lindemann's favorite books.

Marilyn Manson credits this book as one of the inspirations behind the title of his second album, Smells Like Children.

    On Grasse

Grasse has had a prospering perfume industry since the end of the 18th century. Grasse is the center of the French perfume industry and is known as the world's perfume capital (la capitale mondiale des parfums). Many "noses" are trained or have spent time in Grasse. It produces over two-thirds of France's natural aromas (for perfume and for food flavourings). This industry turns over more than 600 million euros a year.

Grasse's particular microclimate encouraged the flower farming industry. It is warm and far enough inland to be sheltered from the sea air. There is an abundance of water, thanks to its situation in the hills and the 1860 construction of the Siagne canal for irrigation purposes. Jasmine, a key ingredient of many perfumes, was brought to southern France by theMoors, in the 16th century. Twenty-seven tonnes of jasmine are now harvested in Grasse every year.

There are numerous old 'parfumeries' in Grasse such as Molinard, Fragonard, Galimard each with tours and a museum.

    Perfume-making techniques in the book

    Maceration
Maceration, in chemistry and herbalism, the preparation of an extract by soaking material (such as animal skins or parts of fibrous plants) in water, vegetable oil or some organic solvent. The word may also refer to the same process when used to produce perfume stock.

    Enfleurage
Enfleurage is a process that uses odorless fats that are solid at room temperature to capture the fragrant compounds exuded by plants.

A large framed plate of glass, called a chassis, is smeared with a layer of animal fat, usually from pork or beef, and allowed to set.

Botanical matter, usually petals or whole flowers, is then placed on the fat and its scent is allowed to diffuse into the fat over the course of 1-3 days. The process is then repeated by replacing the spent botanicals with fresh ones until the fat has reached a desired degree of fragrance saturation.

This procedure was developed in southern France in the 19th century for the production of highgrade concentrates.

Once the fat is saturated with fragrance, it is then called the "enfleurage pomade", which was sold as is, or it could be further washed or soaked in ethyl alcohol to draw the fragrant molecules into the alcohol. The alcohol is then separated from the fat and allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the absolute of the botanical matter. The spent fat is usually used to make soaps since it is still relatively
    fragrant.

This method of fragrance extraction is by far one of the oldest. It is also highly inefficient and costly but was the sole method of extracting the fragrant compounds in delicate floral botanical such as jasmine and tuberose, which would be destroyed or denatured by the high temperatures required by methods of fragrance extraction such as steam distillation. The method is now superseded by more
efficient techniques such as solvent extraction or supercritical fluid extraction using liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) or similar compressed gases.

    Smell this!

Sense of smell: most primitive sense -- located in the same part of our brain that effects emotions, memory, and creativity.

Allows us to identify food, mates, and danger, as well as sensual pleasures like perfume and flowers/nature. Sudden scents, like smelling salts, jolt the mind.

The senses of smell and taste, two of the five senses identified by Aristotle, are called “chemical senses” and are sometimes regarded as one sense rather than separate senses.

About 80% of what we taste is actually due to our sense of smell.

A food’s flavor can be altered by simply changing its smell, while keeping its taste the same.

Sense of smell becomes stronger when we are hungry.

Odor: a chemical dissolved in air, generally at a very low concentration, which we perceive by smell.

Pleasant odors: “fragrance,” “scent,” or “aroma”
    Unpleasant odors: “stench” and “stink”

“Perfume” refers to fine fragrances or wearable scents.

The perception of all odors is subjective and based on cultural conditioning or emotional state.

Trivia from my brand management class: Chanel No. 5 was the first mainly synthetic perfume. Coco wanted a designer or designed scent, so even though it used jasmine as one of its notes, it was intended to be a chemical composition that Chanel can label as its own creation.

Coco chose from a number of samples, and chose composition no. 5, hence the name.

I've been waiting for a chance to drop this data. It's been crowding my head for months. There, I feel better now.

Does Grenouille even know - or better yet, appreciate - the concept of aesthetics and science? I like how Suskind conveyed a mild scorn of sorts to people that gives too much value to both aesthetics and science, by giving us a character who simply don't care.

"Can we describe it as a science? Grenouille's skills are instinctive and are there from birth, not learned and acquired through experience, di ba?"

Grenouille's innate skill applies only to the discernment, compartmentalization, cataloging, and mixing of scents. He also had to rely on science when it came to capturing the essense, e.g. maceration, enfleurage. That's why he apprenticed, diba? To learn the science and to have access to the tools for capturing scents.

As Suskind made him do, of course. *pahabol bago ipaalala ni Czar*

      Save Changes Cancel

I once commented here of Grenouille being "amoral". While the act of killing is evil per se, however, the one doing the act is devoid of evil intent. Grenouille is not like any other, while the normal human being identifies another by the way that person relates to him, the way that person looks or acts towards him or relates to another, Grenouille identifies/relates/recognizes another human (or even a certain place) by his/her/its scent. But he doesn't regard you as a person but as a certain scent. In his world, we are different "scents". It happens that the virgins have the most beaufiful scent that he can harvest.

I've really admired how Suskind described the scents of a place, a flower, a virgin and other people. While we describe scents by mentioning comparisons or liking it to another scent, he did it by descrcibing the scent as it is. His words will enable you to have a good imagery of place, etc..oh, i hope i make sense, the way i perceived the story..ha, ha ha! :-) (this is just the rambling of a happy birthday-girl ).

here's an argument against the amorality of grenouille:

devoid of evil intent or born evil? remember how there was always something sinister about him, even as a baby, with grenouille as somehow involved--implied though unexplained--in the deaths of those who took him in from madame whatshername and the tanner to the ageing perfumer who died when the bridge upon which his house stood collapsed into the river.

maybe this is more of a reflection of how a slave to instinct we are, an instinct that relies more heavily on sense of smell than we realize. faced with the unknown (grenouille's lack of smell, no reference in memory to base judgment on), the people in grenouille's life panic. maybe the evil is our tendency to allow emotion to get the better of us? or maybe the evil is just ignorance...

Can I describe the way people die around him - even as they get something out of him or his skills - as Faustian? It certainly looks that way, even if no actual deal-making was done between these greedy people and Grenouille.

It also struck me that the only people in his life that has escaped the wrath of his evil are the priest and Grenouille's first wet nurse. I guess the reason is that they followed their instinct about him and dropped him like the proverbial hot potato.

Before we can really answer whether Grenouille is evil, we have to define what we mean by the word "evil." And the sinister things that happened around him--did he cause them? Definitely there was "evil" implied there, but the question remains--is evil an objective reality or is it based on our perception?

Um, say we base this society's perception. That is, with respect to two effects: the first, the effect of his actions if say he is alive and did his deeds while living in our society (i.e. us, the readers) , and second, the effects of his deeds to the society in the novel. So is he evil?

Masyadong malawak yung salitang evil. It's better nga to focus on the amorality/immorality aspect.

I tend to think that he is not amoral because his surreptitious way of conducting his business suggests some guilt or shame,

      BUT

in the world that Suskind has contrived, it seems that there is no way Grenouille could have built up a moral system. Morality is learned, acquired through parental rearing, schooling, cultural norms, religion, observation, study, others' moralizing, etc. And in this story, his limited exposure to people is with people who either used and abused him or did not want to have anything to do with him. So, there was no one to nurture him and help him identify what is right and wrong. So, I think Suskind made him to be amoral.

But then why did Suskind made it so that, as Czar said, "there was always something sinister about him, even as a baby, with grenouille as somehow involved--implied though unexplained", if morality is learned & acquired externally? Is the narration trying to establish morality as relativistic (i.e. if he was nurtured, Grenouille won't be "evil"/amoral) or universal (i.e. it's in Grenouille's nature to be "evil"/amoral)?

So how shall we call this unknown powerful force? I can think of one word.

teka, teka. let me clarify. By Suskind, I didn't mean Suskind the author, but Suskind the narrator--which may or may not be a projection of Suskind in the novel. What the narrator can reveal and imply is limited. What he tells us is as much as what he doesn't say or imply.

I would also like to ask, if Grenouille doesn't have that experience matrix that makes ordinary people cherish/loathe specific odors, why does he think the scent of certain (not even all) teenage virgins as the most heavenly of all?

Also, why choose the Plum Girl and Laure Richis above all the virgins of that similar age in Paris and Grasse?

Balik sa usapang love. He just wants to be loved. Though all scents to him are neutral/equal, he recognized that scent as that which makes somebody attractive, loved.

But why virgins? Why virgins, when Grenouille was unaware of the cultural constructs and machismo that prize virginity.

Sans cultural constructs, just basic instincts, diba talaga naman at that age in puberty when you were just starting to understand your power as a female to attract, when you were experiencing a budding sexuality but was as yet untouched, uncorrupted -- wasn't that a heady period when you felt invincible, attractive, that you can have it all? Diba? Or did I just imagine that?

it still drives you crazy, huh?

We saw that the gentry reacted towards the perfume with lust. Because they had enough to eat, they weren't driven by hunger, just an overpowering need for physical pleasure.

My take on it: Grenouille was an observer at that orgy; he wasn't part of it, and he was crushed when he saw that the gentry adored the scent and not him per se. He wanted some form of recognition for his physical presence so he set out to use his body in a different way, and he went to the cemetery knowing that the starving lowlifes would pounce on his body, because as Czar pointed out, they were driven not just by lust but also the need for sustenance.

right. they're like babies. their main concern is gustatory, not salacious pleasure; although i think grenouille conflated them when he entered puberty, which he spent in hibernation and then emerging more than a man. he had a purpose.

he wanted to be god and went on a rampage, preferring the purest of creations--virgins--much like Zeus raping almost every mortal he sets his eyes on. and when he finished creating the omnipotent scent, he became one.

Despite Grenouille's physical death (the desecration of his body), one gets the feeling that he lingers and that he has become more powerful. Grenouille's death signifies the transformation of odor (the perfume) into taste--a more active and dynamic sense which is mediated to the mind by the tongue, a more active and dynamic, uhm, organ. Grenouille lives in the rabble that consumed him, each of them setting out for the world to find Love.

The other difference between the orgy and the cannibalistic fiesta is the quantity of perfume he applied. In the orgy scene, it was just a whiff, and it produced a sense of well being so pleasurable, people started to uhm pleasure each other. But at the ending, he poured onto himself all the perfume he had. So lust, in its extreme, becomes violence, an all-consuming need to possess, to consume.

      - good point. perpetrators of crimes of passion (lust) or love gone wild, that turn them violent, even to the ones they supposedly love. reminds me of the scene in "Fatal Attraction" when Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) boils the pet rabbit. chilling!

trivia: Grenouille is pronounced "Grunuy" according to Sana's French friend and means "frog" in french.

i just found out: frogs have a keen sense of smell used to pick up the scent of food or danger. Scent is also used for navigating and spatial orientation especially helping a frog or toad, which follows the olfactory cue from the strong odor of algae to return year after year to the pond where it was born

Speaking of the armpit-sniffing deodorant tester that earns P3000 a day, found some deodorant trivia on mental floss

    1. Be thankful for your foul body odor. According to anthropologist Louis Leakey, it might be responsible for early man's survival. Leakey's theory claims that most predators avoided feasting on humans because our body odor was "too repugnant."

    2. Not only did the ancient Egyptians give us pyramids and flush toilets, they also pioneered the field of deodorants. Egyptians were the first to popularize the idea of applying scents to armpits, usually using cinnamon and other spices that wouldn't turn rancid in the heat.

    3. The Roman poet Ovid preferred a more proactive solution. In Book III of the Art of Love, he cautions women against carrying goats under their arms.

    4. Antiperspirants are classified as drugs by the FDA. Technically, they affect and/or alter your body's natural functions.

    5. The first modern brand of antiperspirant, EverDry, hit drugstores in 1903. The original formula was so acidic that it regularly ate through clothing.

    6. Of course, modern antiperspirants can also ruin your clothing. Aluminum chloride, the ingredient that blocks glandular openings and prevents sweating, is notorious for turning T-shirts yellow. So, blame your antiperspirant for your pit stains, not your body.

    7. Offensive body odor is actually illegal in libraries in San Luis Obispo County, California.

    8. One thing modern antiperspirants don't do is cause degenerative diseases. Medical science has found no conclusive evidence that absorbing aluminum chloride through the skin can lead to memory loss or slurred speech.

    9. Aoki, a Japanese company known for its menswear, has developed a deodorant suit that supposedly absorbs sweat and neutralizes odors all over the body.

    10. But that's nothing! The greatest Japanese innovation in the fight against B.O. is Fuwarinka scented gum. The so-called "functional candy" contains aromatic compounds that cause your skin to release "Fresh Citrus" or "Fruity Rose" aromas for up to 6 hours after chewing.

    11. When Kurt Cobain wrote the lyrics for Nirvana's breakout song "Smells Like Teen Spirit," he didn't know Teen Spirit was a popular deodorant brand. The Mennen Company, which produced the deodorant, wouldn't say whether the song caused sales to spike, but six months after the single debuted, Colgate bought the company for $670 million.

    12. In May 2008, actor Matthew McConaughey revealed that he never uses deodorant or antiperspirant. The next day, he received a year's supply of deodorant body spray from the Axe Company, along with a note on why he might want to start.

Mennen also produced the first deodorant with vitamin E. It flopped. It seemed silly back then, especially since it was targeted to men, who didn't really give a hoot about "vitaminizing" their 'pits.

But now, I notice Vitamin E is back as one of the marketing features of deodorants.

From an article on Mental Floss on Anosmia (inability to smell), written by an anosmiac

•You can be anosmic to just one smell – so maybe you can smell everything else under the sun, but you absolutely cannot smell brownies. Wouldn’t that be strange? Or maybe a blessing.

•When people find out I can’t smell, 95 percent of the time the next question is, “Can you taste anything, then?” Yep. But I think that I like things that taste really strong – really sour, sweet, bitter, etc. I love sauerkraut right out of the can, for example. I suspect maybe I’m a congenital anosmiac (had it since birth) because it is said that those people don’t have a problem with lack of taste whereas people with sudden onset anosmia often find food completely unappetizing.

•Notable anosmiacs include Bill Pullman, Stevie Wonder and William Wordsworth. Rumor has it that Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s is an anosmiac, and that’s why their ice cream is often so tactile. Mmm.

•Some people go undiagnosed for a long time, because as children they just pretended to smell things because they thought that it was a sense you acquired as you got older. I don’t know if mine was so much a case of this – it was more that I didn’t realize how things should smell. Kind of like the first time you get glasses you’re like, “Ohhh, that’s what things are supposed to look like!”

•Anosmia can be a sign of Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s Disease.

•On a somewhat-related note, phantosmia is smelling things that aren’t there, kind of like having a phantom limb. It seems to often be an unpleasant smell – common ones are smoke, rotting flesh, vomit and poo.

•On the other hand, parosmia is when you perceive an odor wrong. So maybe the scent in reality is mint, but for some reason whenever mint is in the air you smell fish.

Yup, Czar did change his handle again... but the person who posted above my post isn't Czar too. :)

I'm sorry to say this Shy, but this is fun!

@ Shy-ing away from 'em all - mali yung guide mo! I'm the original.

a.k.a. SHY is just, is only, is merely a.k.a. SHY.

Just realized that I can deduce which "Shy" is talking simply by reading their posts. After less that three years of being in this group, I have noticed patterns in the manner we post messages.

      My deduction process:

The "Shy" who is most sarcastic is Czar.

The "Shy" who tries to oppose him the most is Marie.

The "Shy" who humors and eggs him on is Fanta.

The calm and rational "Shy" is Blooey.

The "Shy" who hates animals and is particularly obsearvant of typos (end lapfses on grammur) is iHOP.

The "Shy" who rarely posts is me.

      That leaves the real Shy.

Didn't realize that the whole premise of "Shy" is centered on Czar. :P

Shyest of them all is right. To really confuse people, including ourselves, we must change our personalities! Ok, who's going to take who?

And yes, shyness is indubitably centered on Czar. Now, if we played around maydiwayatangnawala's identity, that would be centered on Marie. Hihihi.

Btw, how does Shy for a day egg Shy a.k.a. Kajagoogoo on?

actually, the sarcastic shy is the one most prone to correcting typos and grammar lapses. i'm too shy to say anything; i'm really shy. and i commit my share of errors as well.

Shy the real deal - I check the profile pages of the different Shys when I get confused.
