Flips Flipping Pages Guidelines -- The Living Document

I admit I have been dragging my heels on this matter, but lately there has been a clamor, albeit from only a few members, for some guidelines to help our club continue to be a fun, motivational channel for discussing our love of books.

I don't like rules myself, but I also recognize the need to express expectations. So these guidelines are those expectations.

Because I drafted these, obviously, a lot of my own opinions and biases are reflected by these. I have attempted to capture points raised in earlier online and offline discussions by other members. However, as I drafted the structure and the sentences here, I was limited by my own perception of other' ideas and guided by my own logic and writing style. Your comments would help make these more reflective of Flippers' sentiments.

I have accepted, albeit reluctantly, the task of drafting these guidelines not because I want to dictate but because I have been requested to do so. Because FFP is not a formal organization, there are no formal leaders. As such, I am default leader by virtue of having started this online club. An accidental leader, I term it.

Let me stress that I do not want to restrict the freedom of expression. These guidelines intend to respect and protect the rights of others to enjoy FFP and the benefits a book club brings.

Please comment. There is no deadline to your chance to share your thoughts. Shelfari's editing technology enables us to keep these guidelines current, relevant, and reflective of the members' concerns.

    Flips Flipping Pages (FFP)
    GUIDELINES

    What FFP is:
    • An online site for Filipino shelfarians from all over the world
    • A community of people who love to read, collect, swap, mooch, talk about, sell, touch, smell, look at, give away books.
    • A support group for book addicts. Though most support groups help you quit, here we enable you, encourage you to get more, buy more, read more, learn more!
    • A book club that meets face to face every 2nd Saturday of the month to discuss a particular book, author, theme, or genre.
    • A bulletin board of book-related announcements of events, sales, promotions, and other stuff that feed on our book frenzy.
    • A discussion board of ideas, mini-reviews, book recos, games, questions and debates from intellectual to inane, asaran, kwento, songs, poems, advice, dedications, slum book exchanges, at kung ano ano pa. Preferably book related.

    What is a Flipper?

    • A shelfarian who is part of the Flips Flipping Pages group

    What is an active Flipper?

    • A Flipper who regularly (at least 5 times a month) participates in the online and offline discussions.

Flipper in FFP parlance is a Filipino who likes flipping books.

Flip is the slang for Filipino. Some find it derogatory. I'm fine with it though.

    What FFP is not:
    • A political group
    • A business network
    • A dating service
    • A endorser of any ideology or faith
    • An advocacy group

This is in recognition of the diversity of the members. As such, they are free to exercise their political freedoms and promote their advocacies in venues outside the FFP channels.

nakakatawa naman. who would want to use the FFP as a dating service? but i guess some people would be lonely enough, desperate enough, or sick, to resort to this. so, i guess it's wise to be very specific about what our book club is not. :P

hey, it'll be cute if love blooms at ffp. imagine finding somebody here who shares your love of books, and is cute to boot. hooking up with somebody who is attractive, endearing, and a good match to you is fine.

using ffp as hunting grounds for unsuspecting prey is a different thing altogether.

The Guidelines for the Online Forum:
    1) Be respectful. -- Keep it friendly. No personal attacks. No insults. No name-calling. No flames.

Debates are fine. You can bust your veins dissing or defending the works of authors, arguing the merits and demerits of a literary piece till the sun comes out. But respect the members. We don’t have to like each other here. But we have to respect differences of opinions, personalities, and perspectives. The best way to respect these differences is to steer clear of discussions that may exclude or offend.

Remember that when somebody does not think the way you do, that does not make them stupid. The fact that their ideas are different from yours does not make them uneducated. Beware those who cannot respect other people's world views; it could be your own ignorance and narrow mindedness showing. Let's just be grateful that we can learn from others' perspectives.

    2) No profanity.

    3) No endorsement of illegal materials.

    4) No pornographic content. No links to pornographic sites. This is not a judgment on those who enjoy them, but this is in consideration of FFP minors who may not yet have the maturity to handle adult information.

    5) No black propaganda against any of the members and other personalities.

    6) Authors, publishers, and book distributors may promote their products and events. Keep it book-related. No ads for realty, no invitations to MLM events, no invites to seminars that do not have anything to do with books. If you want to share non-book-related news that the Flippers might appreciate, please post here: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/12439/discussions/57375/Community-Board---Sari-saring-announcements#481912

    7) The administrators will try their best to monitor posts and violations of above guidelines, but since this may be a difficult task, it is expected that members will do their best to self-monitor, and follow the guidelines.

The Guidelines for the Monthly Book Discussions:
    1) The Book discussions go on in two venues: the online and the face-to-face meetings. The online discussion guidelines follow above. The face-to-face meeting conducts follow the guidelines below:

    2) Selection of Moderators :
    a. Moderators may volunteer to moderate on a specific month or be invited to moderate by active Flippers. The moderator should express acceptance of the moderator role and responsibilities.
    b. The selected moderator may invite/request others to co-moderate and to assist with the logistics.
    c. We would like to give more members chances to moderate. It there are 2 or more volunteers for the same month, priority will be given to the one who has not moderated yet or who has moderated less often than the other(s).

    3) Selection of books/authors/themes/genre:
    a. The final say is from the selected moderator.
    b. The moderator, however, would find a higher level of participation and excitement if he/she consults the members for suggestions and ideas on the titles to be discussed.
    c. Sometimes, the suggestions for titles/authors/themes/genres come from the members or some members, and these are finalized before the selection of a moderator.

    ii. Book selection
    iii. Venue, Activities, Logistical Concerns

    d. Address issues on book availability by informing members of online and offline sources, names of members who can lend books.
    e. Coordinate with the logistics assistant(s) on the venue, food, games, activities, fees before, during, and after the discussions.
    f. Assign a scribe and a timer for the discussion.

    7) Roles/Responsibilities of the Flipper:
    a. Actively participate in the discussion on selection of books/authors/themes/genres.
    b. Once a decision is made, support the decision by:
    i. Resourcefully seeking a copy of the book.
ii. Sharing/lending the book to others.
iii. READING the book, regardless of your feelings about it.
iv. Doing your own research should you feel the need to gather more information about the book/author/genre.
    v. Sharing your thoughts in the online and offline discussions.
vi. Allowing the Moderator to set the tone and guidelines of the discussion. Respecting the guidelines, especially in content and timing limitations.
vii. Participating with an intent to share and learn, not to impress others with your knowledge and command of literary jargon. Engage in discussions, share opinions, ask questions, challenge ideas, without attacking any one’s personality and belief systems.
viii. Share comments germane to the discussion. Do not introduce political, ideological, spiritual, judgmental information and opinions that do not contribute to the discussion.
ix. Those who choose not to read for whatever reason (can't deal with the genre, busy, etc.) waive the right to opine but have full rights to learn from others and enjoy the social interaction. They are encouraged to take an observing/ inquiring (when time permits) stance. Or may volunteer to scribe or take photos. He/she may, however, enjoy the atmosphere and participate actively in the following activities:
    1. Pre- and post-discussion socializing
    2. Book swap
    3. Eating
    4. After party
    x. Bring a book for the book swap.
xi. Welcome newbies and make them feel comfortable without overstepping social and personal boundaries.

    8) On Newbies – Most groups benefit from the influx of new members and guests. They bring in fresh new perspectives and they help minimize the formation of cliques. We should do our best to make them feel welcome and included. Newbies may attend 1 or 2 meetings without having read the assigned book. However, they should be encouraged to read because they will reap the benefits of better understanding the discussion.

They should not also be pressured to contribute, to moderate, to scribe, or to take on roles. But they are most welcome to actively participate, learn, and come back to the next meetings.

    9) On the spirit of the rules – None of us wants to be a legalistic bunch of uptight book club nazis and nerds. As such, these guidelines are shared here to help us define some norms and to orient moderators and members. Because FFP is not a formal group, there are also no formal sanctions. It is assumed that members are here to enjoy the benefits of a social network of book-lovers and would like to keep the group active and effective, a motivational environment for the exchange of ideas. There will be no official enforcers of the above guidelines. We hope that people would be responsible and considerate, would self-monitor and accept constructive comments.

The discussions that preceded this draft can be found here: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/12439/discussions/107267/An-open-and-angst-free-discussion-on-FFP-Reading-Group-Ground-Ru#1231638

"Because FFP is not a formal group, there are also no formal sanctions."

Rules are not rules if there are no consequences. They're, therefore, just ideas.

I think there should be clear cut sanctions for offenses. Maybe a warning for the 1st offense and a membership blockage on the 3rd. Rules are also meant to PROTECT the members from unscrupulous people. People who abuse your trust, generosity and their welcome shouldn't be tolerated else they just keep on taking advantage of your goodness and of the group as a whole.

    Just my two cents worth.

I've changed the word rules to guidelines. I think that it is going too far to have some sort of penal system here. I mean if you imagine how easily we, anyone, can violate above guidelines, we'll be issuing warnings left and right. The point about endorsing illegal materials, for example. Though the spirit of that rule may be about endorsing terroristic activities, e.g. websites for creating bombs, it can also cover links to illegal copies of e-books, the passing on of pdfs, etc. And how many of us do that?

I think the guidelines are normative. And members are free to site these guidelines when they see anyone stepping out of bounds. But to have sanctions? Who will be the judges? Who are the enforcers? I imagine a bizarre new world.

I believe that this book-reading group is composed of intelligent creatures who can understand the guidelines and can self police. When one unscrupulous member does violate the guidelines and harm anyone, then it should be dealt with tactically, not by blanket rules.

If anyone feels strongly enough about sanctions, then do create the rules for that. I do not feel comfortable going there. And I cannot imagine the administrative tasks required to enforce those.

I admire how this group has volunteered to organize and moderate the different discussions. How so many creative ideas have come into play, and how very busy career people have given their time to make our events fun and successful. But the fuel behind that is a spirit of fun. I wonder how many would want to handle the task of being FFP police, vigilantes.

In one of my other egroups, the houserules are posted once a month as a reminder for everyone esp newbies on how to conduct themselves in the forums and Reading Group Discussions.

Brava, Ihop, for putting this together :)

Just a minor note, Ihop. Under the section "What FFP is," it's stated that the face to face discussions are usually during the 2nd Saturday of the month. But, in the "Roles and Responsibilities of the Moderator" section, it says 3rd Saturday.

By the way, I appreciate that you came up with these guidelines. I love the diversity we have in FFP, but I think it's also appropriate that we have a few ground rules, and that these ground rules are well-defined and communicated to everyone.

I like the rules and as the community grows, it's always good to have these. Sorry, IH! I haven't been a very good flipper. Finally decided to make time though. I miss you guys. :)
