Hi,
my debut novel will be released in a couple of weeks from Urban Books. I have been blessed to have certain people in my life who've helped me promote however, I feel I need to do more. "The Boss...the story of a female hustler" made the Feb. 2008 Vibe Magazine Books of the Month list and I am so excited about it. What I need to know is: How do I effectively promote my literary work with very little to no money?

That's simple,

call Saving The Classics, perhaps they can HELP! They are looking for young artist like yourself. Besides, they put music & books in all kinds of venues....Hair Salons, Restaurants,
Sub shops, barber shops, you name it, that probably have books

there. So, if you are in fact, looking for help, call them! Leave a message....1-(877)-99-classic (5277). I am sure they can help a Sista. Especially when she's a Shelfari Friend of the guy who owns it!

The internet is very effective. you should join some yahoo groups so that you can network and find places to promote. I've done well at book festivals. Print up flyers at work to pass out about your book. I go to kinkos and do bookmarks all of the time.

Also, go to mosaic.com and email book clubs. They are a cost effective way to help promote your book, plus you get reviews as well.

Don't forget, your friends and family will buy your book, but the key is to get other readers to know about you. I know people have an aversion to myspace, but it's a definite way to let the readers know about who you are and about your book!

Make sure you have a wensite set up as well. You can get t-shirts, pens, etc. Vistaprint does some good promos in bulk for cheap.

Feel free to email me if you need any other pointers!

You need a website, if you can't get one right away get a myspace page, blackplanet, yahoo groups as suggested and salons, libraries, local independent bookstores and business cards (try vistaprint) they are reasonable. Answer ALL phone calls, emails and queries, make it your business to pass out 15-20 business cards per day. Your day should not end until that 15th card is passed out. Send shout outs to friends and family in the book, do not give out free copies to friends and family, tell them you need their support. STRATEGICALLY, give away free copies of your books to reviewers, book clubs, local media, college groups, sororities etc., I would even send ONE to a prison just to generate a buzz. Shelfari is great! I have met TONS of people here, as I think of more I will write them, but that's a start

Thank you very much. I am on a deadline right now and I'm working hard to meet it. Because of that, I am not as well versed in posting messages, excerpts and stuff here on Shelfari (LOL).

Print flyers, send flyers to book clubs, place them at book store counters, get a myspace, stay active in discussion boards
PRAY :) Good luck to you. I'm excited for you.
