Hello to all the lovely ladies (and handsome gents if you're out there) who've taken a moment to drop in on this discussion. Much love to Deatri and the club for choosing my book, mon. That's ai'rey for true!

So Deatri asked me to say a little about myself. That is an interesting question for several reasons. The primary one being that I am a persona created in the mind of a writer with much going on in her head. I hail from de' islands. When someone asks which one I say all of dem, mon. I believe that we are all one, no? And I believe that for all of us, love is the most important thing. Which is why I absolutely love writing romance novels! I fall in love with each leading man (and am trying to find him in real life, mon! ::wink::). I try to write characters that strike a balance between real life and fantasy, characters that people can relate to and at the same time that will take the reader on a wonderful journey. I very much enjoyed my journey that brings you "Body By Night".

Body By Night was inspired by my time at the gym. Starting in about 2005-6, I joined Bally's gym and became a step-aholic! You know, the people behind the glass at the back of the gym doing intricate dance steps on a little board that's about three feet long and 4-8 inches, or more, off the ground, depending on the stepper and how many blocks he/she has under the step. I love step because while it gives you a great workout, it really feels like you're just dancing and having a good time. It's great cardio, but also works those leg muscles. But don't forget the crunches to strenghthen that core!

The hero of Body, JaJuan "Night" Simmons, came from my imagination, not the gym floor. Haven't seen anybody like him walking around and helping the ladies...trust! But I'm looking! D'Andra represents the many beautiful thick ladies I know, friends and family, some who are healthy and some who could join D'Andra in her new regimen!

As this storyline unfolded in my head, I was acutely aware of the importance of being in good shape. I felt so much better when I lost a few pounds (15) and got in shape. Exercise is good for the soul! And eating right not only makes you look better, it makes you FEEL better! That's why it was important that D'Andra be focused on feeling good, being healthy, and not just losing weight. That is why I'm glad that instead of going on a diet, she changed her lifestyle!

Well, that's a little bit about me and how this book came about. I look forward to hanging out with all of you tomorrow, answering your questions, discussing the book, the art of writing, lifestyle changing, fine Black men, sexy thick sistahs, or anything else you want to talk about!

      Hello Zuri,

First, I wanted to thank you for writing an outstanding novel. Body by Night is my kind of novel. Great job. Keep it up. I'll be sure to go back and get your previous title and keep you on my mental list of authors to look out for.

Second, thanks for coming here and hanging out today. I couldn't get on the site from work and came home to a real treat in reading the discussion posts.

      Thanks a bunch

    Zuri,

I really enjoyed Body By Night. I loved all the family drama and twists with the plot. D'Andra's mother and sister were a trip and a half! Drama for days... And I liked the plot twist with her dad... Nice work!

Night was an excellent hero. Fine. Dark. Handsome. Everything I like in a hero... I wish I could find him at my gym. A sista would be in shape for sure! LOL.

I was wondering if you planned to write a novel for D'Andra's friend, the woman who had been drugged and raped by D'Andra's ex? That's a sista who deserves to find some love.

Great novel. I still need to read your first novel. I have it on my to-be-read pile. What's next for you?

    Hey Zuri,

I absolutely loved this book! D'Andra was near and dear to my heart because she's a nurse like me :) Though this was a wonderful romance I totally enjoyed the emphasis you placed on the importance health issues and that getting healthy and in shape is a process. And not an overnight magic pill. You took the reader step by step on D'Andra's journey as she became a new woman.

Night was such an awesome hero. I found it so beautiful that he was attracted to D'Andra's inner beauty as well as her outer beauty. OMG the way he proposed to her was amazing. And that scene in the gym after the grand opening night! Whew!

Ooh, I wanted D'Andra to sucker punch that nasty Jazz in the face just one time! But D'Andra was so sweet and too much of a lady to do such a thing. I couldn't believe that heifer had a nerve to show up at the hospital to see Night's momma! Better yet, the momma should have sucker punched her! LOL

Zuri, I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of your work :)

Yes, Jazz needed her behind kicked.

I loved Night's mom too. Both she and D'Andra were of the really nice and sweet...but don't mistake kindness for weakness tribe of women. They are strong and loving and giving, but if pushed they will find a way to push back in their own way. Like when D'Andra just started saving her money and moved out of her mother's toxic house. Or when she wouldn't let Night bully her too much. (I loved the scenes when she pushed back). Or the way Night's mom let that white woman know she wasn't gonna let her call her out of her name. Night found him a strong and sweet woman just like his mother. LOL.

LOL...Yes, I agree. I was cracking up when Night's mom filled D'Andra in on the whole Grace thing. That little old white woman was a hot mess. D'Andra did push back, but you know me Gwyneth, I wanted her to get gangsta like Carla! LOL I was so happy when she got out of her momma's crazy house, too. Sleeping on the sofabed, paying half the bills and playing mother to her sister's kids. I also liked that she refused Night's offer to move in with him. Although he was upset about it I believe he respected her because she was determined to be independent and in control of her life.

I really loved Night's mom as well. I especially liked how she put Night in his place when he was feeling some kinda way when he found out his step-dad was D'Andra's biological father. But in all honesty I can see how Night was a little shaken up by all that drama.

Yes, his mother did put him in his place, didn't she? LOL. She let it be known that he could do what he wanted, but it wasn't going to affect her relationship with D'Andra. LOL.

    Hey y'all, good morning!

First of all, I'm so excited to be talking with all of you. Don't you just love the internet, and these communities all over the place? It helps me hook up with a stellar writer in her own right, Gwyneth Bolton! Glad you enjoyed the novel, one that I originally wrote as a stand alone, but that readers now want to see a sequel! Like you, they want to find out what's happening with D'Andra's friend, Chanelle, and also how the marriage is going with little sis, Cassandra. She was such a trip, but her childhood and how she was favored, I think, has a lot to with why she's so diva. So continuing this story is definitely on the table!

Victoria! Because my Mama has been one for 50 years, nurses are some of my favorite people! Y'all earn your money, hear me? I agree, both Jazz and Frieda Miller, the codgety old woman at the nursing home, could have been slapped! She got her even change with Night's mother though, Val don't play! And who knows, if there is a sequel, it might just be time for a beatdown from somebody...who knows? :)

As for what's next? Y'all, I am totally IN LOVE with the hero of my next book, Ransom Blake. He's the young panther stalking the cougar in Lessons From A Younger Lover, out March, 2010. Just for y'all, I've posted a sneak, sneak peak (as this book has not yet been edited!) just for you! Keep the questions and convo coming...I'm going to be hanging out with this group all day!

Ummmm.... yummy a tender-roni hero! Can't wait to read that one. I'll love seeing what the young man thinks he can teach the older woman. What's the age difference between the hero and heroine in Lessons From A Younger Lover?

I would love to see a sequel that checked in on Cassandra and her man. I have a feeling that relationship is going to last. They seemed rather...shall I say... happy with one another.

Hello everyone... this is the first novel that I read by Zuri and it was very good. I enjoyed the relationship between Night and D'Andra. it did not develop overnght and both had their issues with committment. The ex-girlfriend should have been pimp slapped a cople of times for her antics in trying to break them up. the twist with the step dad at first was kind of awkward but as I continred to read - it worked.

That's one of the things I loved about the novel too, Priscilla, the progression from friends to lovers to being in love was nicely paced. She had the space to take us through that journey and made it interesting enough for us to keep reading as they progressed. By the end, I felt they had a strong foundation.

    Hey Cilla:

Wasn't that twist interesting? When I found out who it was, I was like.....WHAT??? As amazing as it may seem, we writers are sometimes just as surprised as you at what happens as you are! For the longest time, I thought that Frank, the photographer, was D'Andra's father. But then they (the characters) started filling me in on the back story and I was like "shut up!!!" Glad it finally worked for you Cilla...!

I was thinking it might have been Frank too since they had such a connection and bonded so quickly. But that's what's made the twist work so well for me. It wasn't who I was thinking it was going to be and it fit nicely. I love it when a writer can still surprise me. ;-)

Now that would have been something if Frank was D'Andra's father! I loved him! He was so cool, pure male sophistication. I can't wait to read Chanelle's story. I'm so glad she and D'Andra made peace and are friends again. I would love for them to confront that dirty dog ex-boyfriend.

Zuri, please give your mom a big hug and kiss for me! Nursing for 50 years. That is amazing! I've been a nurse for 18 years and I know the struggles I had to go through. I can only imagine how it was for your mom 50 years ago. I KNOW she had to set some folks straight over the years! LOL

Ha Victoria! HER story is the one I want to write! I'm sure it will be a non-fiction bestseller from nurses alone buying it! She endured all kinds of prejudice, discrimination and medical ignorance. She is a nurse in the mental health field (35 years spent at a state hospital), and her career began when they were still performing lobotomies and strapping insane folk down to metal tables! So folk were racist and crazy too??? Whew!!! And what's more...she went back to school after five kids for her bachelors in nursing and her bachelors and master's in social work! My mama...my she-roe!

@ Gwyneth...a tenderoni for sure! As the story begins, Gwen is forty (where they say life begins but hers is...well...you'll have to get the book ::wink::) and Ransom is twenty-six! Of course, she is NOT trying to feel a brothah who could almost be her son. But sometimes life can surprise you and believe me...there are all KINDS of lessons Gwen learns!

Zuri... what else inspires you when you write?

    Zuri D

You know Cilla...it can be any number of things. I love life - observing people and situations all around me. So it can be something I read, or see on television. Often, as in Body By Night, the storyline comes from experiences in my own life. My partner is ten years younger than me, and his sexy a-- undoubtedly inspired Younger Lover! Ha! Yes, ladies, he's taught me a thing or two...

Several times it's been a title popping into my head that drives the storyline, as in an upcoming one I'm writing that features a police officer. This peace loving, vegetarian, one love sistah never thought she'd be writing about the law! But the way the story is unfolding in my head, the love story and how their inevitable relatioship unfolds is at the heart of the matter. His profession, while significant, is a back story.

Oh, and finally? Those contractual duelines and getting a check! Those minor details inspire a sistah too!

    Ms. Day,

I just wanted to let you know that I loved Body By Night. I enjoyed reading about the transition that D'Andra under went physically and mentally. I wanted D'Andra to beat up her mother and sister, they were so ungrateful. I was glad that she lgot her own place. I found the book to be very entertaining. I looked the part about her first day at the gym, when she just sat in the car and debating about whether to go into the gym. Night was just what she needed. After reading the book I was ready to join a gym to search for my own Night, but the husband stopped that idea :) cold. I purchased Lies Lovers told after reading this book, and thoroughly enjoyed this book as well.

Please keep the good books coming,

    Current Booklist:

    Lies Lovers Tell
    Body By Night
Lessons From A Younger Lover (March, 2010)
Healthy Appetites (working title, out 2010). BTW, what do y'all think of this title? This book is about a female chef who falls for the owner of the hotel where she works - though that's not how the love affair begins...details at 11... I love this title, but my editor is convinced people who just see the title on list will think it's a cook book.

I also have several other books in various stages of pre-production, including the one involving law enforcement.
