This morning, I finished BLOODY AWFUL - Georgia Evans, 2nd book in her paranormal cozy trilogy set in WWII England. It was even better than the first in the trilogy.

    Currently:
BOCD in the car: ICE TRAP - Kitty Sewell, suspense
Purse book: DESOLATE ANGEL - Chaz McGee, paranormal mystery
    Bedside book: searching....searching.....

DH and I gave up on ICE TRAP - Kitty Sewell, the BOCD we were listening to in the car. It's supposed be suspense, but the only suspense was when the suspense was going to begin. I liked it more than DH, but to keep the peace for carpooling, I changed out to one I knew we'd both dig. I'll get ICE TRAP later as a handheld and read on my own.

      Currently:
BOCD in the car: CUT & RUN - Jeff Abbott, 3rd in Judge Whit Mosley series, suspense/thriller, CD 1 of 11
Purse book: DESOLATE ANGEL - Chaz McGee, paranormal mystery, hoping to get a little sip'n'read time tomorrow afternoon
Bike book: HOLIDAY GRIND - Cleo Coyle, cozy mystery
Bedside book: VICIOUS CIRCLE - Mike Carey, page 63, wish I could stay up past my bedtime to read more....

I really enjoyed Ice Trap, I would call it more of a psychological mystery than a real edge of your seat thriller.

I finished CUT & RUN - Jeff Abbott the other day in the car on the way to work. A very cool suspense to listen to. I love this series.
I also finished VICIOUS CIRCLE - Mike Carey that evening. Stayed up late to finish. Superbly intense paranormal UF mystery. Highly excellent.

      Currently:
BOT in the car: SKIN DEEP: book 6 Bodybags Mystery - Christopher Golden, suspense, tape 3 of 5, side 1
Bedside book: HOLIDAY GRIND - Cleo Coyle, cozy mystery, well over halfway through
Purse book: DESOLATE ANGEL - Chaz McGee, paranormal mystery, over halfway through thanks to Wii time for Lady K

Bedside book: OVER MY DEAD BODY - Michele Bardsley, chap 6

I finished the so-so SKIN DEEP - Christopher Golden yesterday afternoon. Bleh....the first book in this series and (I think) the 4th or 5th were superb, then this one was a let down. It felt like he was trying to make everything fit to move the story along and the segues felt weak. I am done with the series even after only three listened to, but not done with the author as I know he has talent. And he writes paranormal mysteries that are highly thought of.

      Currently:
BOCD in the car: DEATH'S HALF ACRE - Margaret Maron, Judge Deborah Knott series, one of my favorite series to read and/or listen to
Purse book: DESOLATE ANGEL - Chaz McGee, paranormal mystery, so very close to finishing this one. It's a good book that keeps me on the recumbent bike longer
Bedside book: OVER MY DEAD BODY - Michele Bardsley, paranormal romance with some mystery, over halfway through

We are reading thrillers this month over at Play Book Tag. This is the list of contenders vieing for my attention this month:

    * Doug Preston just sent me a galley of his next solo novel, Impact. Yay!
    * I will harrass James Rollins until he sends the MS of his next novel, Alter of Eden.
    * I have preordered Stephen King's epic Under the Dome. I'm more excited about it than anyhting he's written in decades.
    * I have also preordered the forthcoming Michael Crichton, a book I'm equally excited and saddened by.
    * I need to re-read and review my friend Boyd Morrison's forthcoming debut thriller, The Ark. I haven't seen it since I worked on the MS a couple of years ago.
    * I also have miscellaneous other thrillers awaiting review. There's a PBO called the Hunt for Atlantis or something like that by a Brit named Andy McDermott possibly. God knows what else. Oh, and maybe I can finally get to Bill Floyd's The Killer's Wife. And a Hunger Gamesesque YA thriller called The Maze Runners by James Dashner.

Just finished: "Rain Gods" by James Lee Burke, sadly is not his best work. Yet he is such a good writer that if someone were to read that before any other work by him, they'd say it was a very good read.

And most of the way through, "Blindsight" by Peter Watts. A slightly slow to get going Sci-fi/fantasy/horror story with interesting psychological head trips: it's been a good read so far.

And nearly done with "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. A very good read.

I've read Gateways by F. Paul Wilson - very good read.
Harrowing by Alexandra Sokoloff - very good thriller.
Crisscross by F. Paul Wilson (the next in the Repairman Jack series after Gateways) - I also enjoyed this one but things kept going bad with Jack's fix-it jobs and I kept wondering if all that stuff to just continue to happen. It made it a little frustrating sometimes.
Also read Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory. It was good... don't know if it a real thriller but it was enjoyable and different.

My copy is waiting for me 3,000 miles away at my parents house. I had Amazon ship it there, because I wasn't convinced it would arrive before I fly home to visit them on Saturday. And now I'm so frustrated I don't have it that I'm struggling not to purchase a second west coast copy!

I did sit down in the bookstore the other day and read the first 47 pages. It was off to a great start, and I can't wait to read further. Fortunately, I'll be on vacation for 11 days starting Saturday. :-)

I can't wait to see your review, Becky.

    "Pale Immortal" by Anne Fraser
    "Aphrodite" by Russell Andrews
"Last Known Vicitm" by Eric Spinder
    "Echo Park" by Michael Connelly
    "Play Dead" by Anne Fraser
All of the above books were only .25 cents!
"The Murder Game" by Beverly Barton
    "The Family" by Mario Puzo
"Silent Witness" by Richard North Patterson
    "Snow Blind" by P.J. Tracy
    "Bloodroot" by Susan Wittig Albright
"The Hour I First Believed" by Wally Lamb
These books were only .50 cents!
Does anybody know anything about any of these?

I haven't read the 2 Anne Fraser's on your list, but I have read several others and enjoyed them.

Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series is great, Echo Park is the 12th book in the series, but it isn't absolutely necessary to read them in order; I started at book 7, not knowing it was a series and have continued forward from there and also have read some of the books from the start of the series.

I agree with everyone, the Monkeewrench books are great, but that series I think works better if read in order.

Bloodroot is book 10 in the China Bayles series- cozy mystery. These books don't nneed to be read in order.

I read Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone, and I really liked it.

After wrapping up King's Under the Dome (fantastic and impressively quick-paced story) I started (and finished) Joanna Challis's mystery debut, Murder on the Cliffs. It was a fun read. Daphne du Maurier is the main character and I'm a big fan of Rebecca (to which there are multiple references) so it made for a really entertaining story. Another quick one, and it's a pretty good whodunit.

Just finished "Drood" by Dan Simmons: a dark and a bit creepy tale of the last 5 years of Charles Dickens as told by his friend and sometimes collaborator Wilkie Collins. A good read that is worth the bother going to the library to root it out.

And I am a 1/3 into The Murder Room by PD James. A good English who-done-it.

And I got sucked up entirely by “Very Bad Deaths” by Spider Robinson. It is a fast moving suspense taking place in and around the Vancouver area. It’s been pretty good so far actually.

Yes, it was written in the ‘unreliable Witness’ format. You weren’t ‘spose to like him. I saw it right off. Although, I would have preferred if he had written it in the older style: which would have been more common back then, instead of the ‘Agitha Christi’ style which is the way people have come to think of the format now days. ‘War of the Worlds’ was written in the older method. The narrator was unreliable not because he was a scoundrel but rather that he was not learned in the sciences, and therefore not able to speak with authority about the things he was witnessing.

I also agree that it should have been a bit shorter. Still, there were a number of very good scenes.

    • Ladyslott

      Ladyslott

that's funny because in my review I wrote that Wilkie was an unreliable narrator- was he dreaming, hallucinating, in a drug induced stupor?? I just felt that for a book entitled Drood there should have been more Drood. A better title might have been Wilkie Collins and the jealousy and drugs that ate him alive.

There were some really good scenes; the underground world, the chase across the rooftops, the hidden worlds of Drood, the scarab- all this was great, but it was surrounded by endless pages of what Wilkie ate, where he went for a walk, his dealings with the women in his life, really to the point of distraction.
