Shocking and really hated ending - Karin Slaughter's Beyond Reach

I had read all of Karin Slaughter's Grant County series and loved the main characters:
Jeffrey Tolliver, Sara, Lena... I am a librarian and have recommended the series to many of my friends and patrons. When the latest, Beyond Reach, came out in 2007, we were all excited. This book ended in a completely unexpected way - the biggest twist that I'd ever read. My friends and patrons, with no exceptions, HATED the ending and many vowed to never read another of Karin Slaughter's books. Going online, I discovered that this reaction wasn't limited to my little area. A much-loved author was being vilified.

Have any of you read the series? Any reactions?

Mary,There is often this kind of ending in Mysterys and Thrillers, there is no guarantee of everyone coming out alive and definitly no HEA guarantee.
I`ve read mysterys for years so my I will often wonder if a H/h will be killed off.And they sometimes are.
I fell completly in love with Jeffry and still feel like crying when I think about it.There is one thing about those endings and that is that I never forget that book and it often ends up as a fav,as BR has .It is definitly in my top 5* forever and Karin will probably be one of my top 5 authors forever because she is a topnotch writer in JMHO.
I think I grieve over these endings as much almost as for someone in real life.

I don't mind surprises such as this - if everything was a HEA end, it shouldn't be realistic, and whilst these are fiction, they are based in realities. I was saddened at the ending and thought it was a real gut lurcher, but it made me sit up and take notice, and realise you can't take things for granted.

I agree that the ending made the book unforgettable. I still read her and am looking forward to her new one, due out soon.

I hated the ending of this book and vowed never to read her books again, I loved the characters of Sara and Jeffrey and the recovery of their relationship which built with each new book, the ending literally made me scream. I have however found myself checking out the new book and debating purchasing it at the local bookshop, she is such a fantastic writer in this genre I don't want to miss out, but I miss Jeffrey.
