What are your watercooler books? The ones you ALWAYS talk about?

    I'd love to hear them!

Lately, I've been spilling about Carpe Demon and California Demon--Confessions of a Demon Hunting Soccer Mom. They are hilarious and thrilling. Even if they are secular, they are written from a Catholic frame of mind. I was raised Catholic, although I am not one anymore, so I totally get what the author talks about. It's like a Christian Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Way funny in the first person view of a stay-at-home mom who battles real demons in her spare time.

The Shades of Style series by Marilyn Griffith... waiting for the mailman to deliver the 2nd and 3rd books!!! I somehow started by reading the last book... but each one is written from a different point of view so the story layers quite nicely.

The fashion industry is so interesting to me. I love the concept of a design house that is run like a ministry... oh that Design Week would focus on such a company :)

Currently, I have been discussing books by Tricia Goyer with my local librarian and she has written a list for the library board to review so that they might carry them.

I am also reading book 5 of the O'Malley series by Dee Henderson. Have so many I discuss with co-workers since I have been "sharing" my "personal library" with them.

I have been reading "The Chronicles of the King" sereis by Lynn Austin and have been so excited by them that I have a set that seems to be usually loaned out...my husband just finished reading it and he never gets so absorbed in books. My son jsut e-mailed me that he read the entire set. Three women at church just finished them. Yesterday, I loaned my copy of book#1 to a friend I see regularly at meetings for work.
You learn about Bible history, you have an exciting story and you learn much about faith. In fact, I quoted something from one of the books in a prayer requst I made to the prayer group I belong to. We are praying for a little boy with cancer that I often had a hard time praying for as I wondered at putting him through so much pain with so little chance of recovery..but if his mother had the faith to believe he could recover; that is how I would pray. Anyway, I was encouraging them to keep praying with this quote from one of the books...the young king is asking his grandfather why God allowed the destruction of his people. The grandfather said, "because no one asked Him for help". The people no longer believed and never thought to pray to Him. By the way, please pray for this little 2-year old. He is going through round #6 of chemo today 9-13, followed by surgery to remove the tumor and then another round of radiation to kill any remianing cancer. He has 1 kidney that is good and can take over for the one that is removed and has no further hearing loss, so he will be able to talk and does respond to sounds. Those are positive signs versus what was predicted by the doctors. Thanks!

Thanks for the prayers..the little boy is doing well with this round..in fact wrapped his arms around his mom and said "I love you". But my husband told me this series taught him alot about the need for and power of forgiveness. My son drove 8 hours to our house to continue driving to Wyoming with his brother, Dad, niece and nephew. At 5 am this morning, he waved the 5th book at me and said "Thanks Mom, these are really good".

My watercooler books change with what I'm going through or focusing on. For awhile, I couldn't stop talking about The House of Sand and Fog. Our Pastor had done a series on fear of man. After reading the book all I could think about was how perfect it demonstrated his sermons. Just about every character had fear of man. Another time I couldn't stop talking about Marjorie Morningstar and her description of sex...how it isn't what it's played up to be. Also, The Count of Monte Cristo, Anna Karenina...and the list goes on.

I was just thinking about this ... and the ONE book I refer to more than any other when I'm sharing my life story is Experiencing God Workbook. It's a Bible Study that transformed my life!
