Where Do You Hear About The Books You Read?

Who do you turn to for advice on the books you read? What influences your decision the most? Friends? Blogs? Reviews? Covers? Advertising???

I find out what books are coming out on christianbook.com. amazon.com, author/publisher websites, christian fiction blogs, etc. I have a Word file that lists books well into 2008 that I am constantly updating.

I read my favorite authors, and also choose other books to read by reviews and recommendations, the genre or subject of a book, book blurbs, and book covers.

I have my favorite authors that I will read any new book they write. Usually I'm aware of when the newest will come out by looking at the CBD catalog. Sometimes I will choose a new book by the blurb in a catalog that catches my eye or pick up a new book at the bookstore when the cover catches my eye.

I'm a bit like Jenny and Mimi - CBD, authors and publishers. I am always reading the Coming Soon section on CBD's fiction site as they go well into the future and I love seeing what is coming up despite my back log of great books I have to read - sigh!!!

I check Amazon.com, check a quick browse through Borders or B&N, Family Christian Stores or through blogs that I read.

I like to read book reviews on Christianbook.com, on Amazon, in the newspapers and in World magazine. I read the book, "Infidel" because of an article about the author in World magazine. I also have a sister who has recommended many books to me. In fact many people in my family read. The best series I have read in a long time was recommended for months to me by my daughter-in-law and although I listened, secretly I thought it would be a boring series because of the time period it was set in. She finally gave up telling me about it and simply brought over her set of books. I then parked them by my bed and one night several weeks later I thought I would give them a try just because I truely love my daughter-in-law. I read the whole book...it was almost 2 am before I fell asleep and I had to be up by 6 am...it was a very long week. I read a book a night and came straight home from work, made supper, cleaned up from supper, told my husband good night and went to bed to read. Fortunately he likes to read and was reading something as well. I'm glad there were only 5 books in that series...I was wiped out. I then bought a brand new set for my daughter-in-law and proceeded to loan out this set to others...so far 3 people have read them and loved them, my husband is currently on book #2 and I have a couple waiting to get them next. I have also ordered 4 used copies of book #1 of the series on amazon to be sent to friends and children who love to read to give them a "taste" of the series. The friends will have to buy the rest on their own, the children I will continue to supply them with more books in this series.

people's blogs. I get Chapter a week in e-mail. That gets me interested in new things. And seeiing all the books on people's shelves here has got me panting like a mad dog.
Sometimes I just go to the Library, (forgive me, I'd have to be rich to support my habit) and pray for God to direct me to some good books! I do buy books, but generally if I've already checked the author out.

I've got my favorites, but like Kay, I find out a lot from blogs. Also, if I over hear someone talking about a particular book, I'll usually run home and google it, lol What would I do without the Internet?! My bff, Deb, called me today to say that her family's--finally--getting broadband. We're alike in so many ways, but that's not one of them. How has she survived dial up all this time? :) (Not to worry, though, cause I give her up to date book recs. all the time.)

I have made a list from the Christian Fiction Review board on Shoutlife that other people have reviewed. I have added to the list now from friends on Shelfari. My friends have told me about a few books. When I go to the library I look at the back of the book and check out who the publisher is to see if it is a Christian publisher, then read the back cover and see if it interests me. I guess there are a variety of influences, which is good since I read so much.

I saw you mention CROSSINGS as a source you use for new books. Well, my second book, ABANDONED IDENTITY is going to be a featured selection in the CROSSINGS November catalog. I am a new author, so having my second book put in hardcover is very exciting for me. I know this is shameless advertising, please forgive me, it's just that I am really excited to have this opportunity. TT

I am always checking out what others are reading and look the books up on amazon to see what the book is about and read the reviews about the book. I also type "reading lists" in google and browse through them. Sometimes, I go to amazon, go a book I like and see "customers who bought this item also bought this" section. I also look at other's shelfari shelves. When I find books that sound interesting, I look them up online at our library. That way I can see what books they have before having to drag everyone to the library only to find out they don't have any of the books I want to read.

I am lucky enough to work in a store that uses Spring Arbor distribution so I get a magazine called Christian Advance. It gives a list of all new books hiting the market, along with a synopsis. This is my first source for my book buying. I also read reviews on Novel Journey and Novel Review. Of course, I have my favorite authors that I purchase the moment I get wind of a new book. If anyone is interested in seeing the books I've read recently and reviewed, you can visit my website at www.tamaratilley.com
