Wheel of Time--A Memory of Light

"The lion sword, the dedicated spear, she who sees beyond. Three on the boat, and he who is dead yet lives. The great battle done, but the world not done with battle. The land divided by the return, and the guardians balance the servants. The future teeters on the edge of a blade." - Robert Jordan WoT Lord of Chaos

We've seen a lot of books adapted to films - Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Wanted (ugh!) and I think its time the Wheel of Time deserves the movie magic treatment also!! List the director and actors youd want to see in the adaptation :)

A movie cannot work. LOTR had a movie for each book and that still left much out, as well done as they are. This would have to be either a series of movies like that, or a 2-week long mini-series, which is much more likely, considering the huge difference in fan base compared to Tolkien. That would be such a monumental undertaking that no mini-series could be financially plausible. It would all hinge on the first movie being a blockbuster, which is definitely possible... but 6-10 movies? I see New Spring being part of the 1st movie in the form of flashback sequences every time Moiraine mentions her plans over the years. There are lots of slow areas throughout the series that will allow books to be combined into a single movie. Anyway, I think it would have to be a concerted effort, definitely including Peter Jackson with someone intimately familiar with the series. If anything, I could only hope that RJ has a list of actors & actresses who match his vision.

I agree as much as i would love to see the series made into movies i think it would leave way to much out, not to mention how long it would take to film and release the whole series look at harry potter ten years in the making and the last one still isnt out and thats 7 movies we are talking double that. The most logical way is a series on HBO, Showtime, stars. FIRST OFF 12 to 13 episodes each an hour long, for each book/season would be way better than a two and a half three hour movie they would beable to do so much more with it and even drag it out a little more lets face it RJ did thats one of the reasons i love his work he builds it up and builds it up you never want to put down the book. SECOND they can pump them out quicker they can film two seasons back to back and release them both the same year, they did it with the reality series surviver why not this? That way we get the whole series in 6 to 7 years instead of 13 or more!!! I dont want them to rush, but to me it makes more sence. And i really hope they dont turn this into a kids version, id be so disapointed. Another thing, realisticlly we wont have a cast of all A-list stars. There are so many leading characters theres noway they'd beable to hire all A-list stars. I believe there will be a few for the main main characters which is fine. but if they do for everyone it will lead to disaster... Ever hear of the saying to many chief's not enough Indians? Any way thats my thoughs let me know what you think

I would absolutely love a Wheel of Time movie. There would defiantly have to be 13 of them (12 for each of the books and one for New Spring). I think it'd be fairly easy to compact one of the books into a move, so long as they don't spend the first half hour reviewing what's happened in the movies before it. Having to watch an introduction to Channeling 13 times would get pretty old pretty fast. However, if they are planning on making one, I highly doubt it will start pre-production until after A Memory of Light comes out.

By the way, here's what RJ's family said in an interview:

"Q: Will there be a WoT movie?

A: There may be. Right now RJ has on his desk some kind of outline, which is one of the first steps in developing a screenplay. Red Eagle Entertainment has the right."

And here is the word from Dragonmount.com (WoT official website):

Will there be a movie or TV miniseries based on The Wheel of Time?

UPDATE: Things have been moving forward behind the scenes. Red Eagle now says they are in the final stages of negotiations with a director, screenwriters, studios and other parties and will probably have major public announcements in the next couple of months.

Red Eagle Entertainment has "the exclusive, worldwide production and distribution rights to Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World™, the first novel in his best-selling The Wheel of Time™ series. In addition to licensing the property for film and television production, Red Eagle Entertainment will manage a comprehensive ancillary portfolio that will include the development of related video games, toys and other consumer products and services."

They state that they intend to produce "a tightly-linked combination of quality entertainment programming coupled with a wide assortment of licensed products and branded merchandise."

Note: Red Eagle Entertainment is a management company, not a production company. When everything is in place they will contract with a movie or television production company to actually produce the movie.

In true answer to your question though, I think Peter Jackson is who I'd like to direct this monster of an undertaking.

    My picks for actors include:
Jonathan Rhys Myers as Rand al'Thor......................Ryan Gosling as Mat Cauthon
Tom Welling as Perrin Aybara.............................Katie Holmes as Egwene al'Vere
Natalie Portman as Nynaeve al'Meara...............Bruce Willis as al'Lan Mandragoran
Keifer Sutherland as Tam al'Thor.................................Laura Prepon as Aviendha
Hilarie Burton as Min Farshaw.........................Orlando Bloom as Galad Damodred
Chris Pratt as Gawyn Damodred..........................Kirsten Dunst as Elayne Trakand
Nicole Kidman as Morgase Trakand................Donald Sutherland as Thom Merrilin
Christian Bale as Mazrim Taim......................Zita Gorog as Faile (Zarine) Bashere
Claudia Black as Deira Bashere......................Tommy Lee Jones as Elyas Machera
Steve Buscemi as Padan Fain............................Catherine Zeta Jones as Berelain
Julian McMahon as Jaichim Carridin .................John Rhys Davies as Domon Bayle
Demi Moore as Egeanin........................................Clint Eastwood as Pedron Niall
DannyTrejo as Uno..........Jada Pinkett Smith as Tuon, Daughter of the Nine Moons
Michelle Pfeiffer as Siuan Sanche...........................Uma Thurman as Leane Sedai
Rose McGowan as Elaida Sedai..........................Katherine Heigl as Liandrin Sedai
Meryl Streep as Vandene Sedai.......................Katee Sackoff as Birgitte Silverbow
George Clooney as Rahvin.....................................................Jude Law - Moridin
    Hugh Jackman - Demandred...........................................Johnny Depp-Asmodean
Helena Bonham Carter as Moghedien.................Charisma Carpenter as Graendal
Liv Tyler as Lanfear.......................................................Michael Douglas -Be'laal
Christina Ricci as Semirhage..............................................Brad Pitt as Sammael
    Kevin Spacey - Osan'gar...................................................Julia Roberts - Melaine
Rachel Weisz as Moiraine/Caraline Damodred..............Adrian Paul as Logain Ablar

Wow!! That's a lot already, and not anywhere near a complete cast! (But, I'll stop here. ;-P)

Yes, that's true. They're all great actors and it'd be really cool if they got together to make the movie.

I would also like a bunch of unknown characters for the leading roles becasue it adds to the illusion. With high paid actors it can be pretty good but sometimes a film can be more successful with new actors.

P.S. I can really picture Nicole Kidman as Morgase. Or maybe the one from that played the Queen in another movie. I can't remember what it was called.

I like a few of your picks, but there's a few I must disagree upon, most because of age. Remember most of the main characters are in their late teens-early 20s. For example, Katie Holmes, although quite lovely, is 10 years too old for the part. Ditto for C.Zeta.J, because Berelain is only in her 20's. I also imagine Elayne as being incredibly beautiful, which Kirsten Dunst is not; maybe switch her with Katherine Heigl. I think Tom Welling is great, but he's not even close to big enough to be Perrin. You have some excellent choices though, that's for sure. I wish I could rattle actors/actresses off the top of my head to be able to offer up something useful, but alas, I fall short. I applaud the time you must've spent on this, and I hope "the powers that be" look to these forums all over the internet to get some useful ideas as to what true fans "see" when they read. For Min, for example, I imagine a young Sydney Penny.

      I don't think it would. Maybe, MA15+

      Supernatural themes
      Adult themes
      Sexual Referernces
      Medium Violence
      Low level Course Language
      Perhaps Drug Use and Nudity?

It's got the whole lot there. Maybe it will be 'R'.

For the last three, they don't come into play for the first few books, and all the curses are made-up. It may be like LotR – they get higher ratings as the series goes on.

I'd like to see a WoT movie as well. (I haven't finished reading the series yet, just finishing Crown of Swords.) It's a great series, and one of my favorites.

"We've seen a lot of books adapted to films - Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Wanted (ugh!) and I think its time the Wheel of Time deserves the movie magic treatment also!!"

I've been a Potter fan for a long time (got the last three books at midnight, saw all the movies as they came out, etc) and overall I thought the movies have come out all right so far. Lord of the Rings was good (I've read Fellowship and The Hobbit, but simply haven't had the time to read the rest. I'd rather read WoT anyway. :D ). I read the Narnia books, and I think the movies have been better tenfold. Providing the right people do it, the film could turn out pretty good, just, as usual, not as good as the book.

Oh, and yes it *will* be a movie (see FantasyFolder.com). Universal as acquired film rights, and they will be making it in partnership with Red Eagle Entertainment. So 2011 for the release maybe?

I too don't agree with all the picks, but ya know what, it's a fantastic starting place. I really hope the casting directors take all our input (although mine is negligible) into account. What better source of ideas than the fans? I'm impressed by some of the picks though, and it's making me want to see these movies made more & more!

It's great seeing you all choosing these very great actors. It helps us (and hopefully Universal Pictures) sharing our imagination. Of course its impossible to create a great movie with all these famous people going home with the big bucks. As a Lord of the Rings fan I have seen what can be done with relatively unknown actors.

As a true dutchman I would like to see Rutger Hauer performing as - for instance - Mordeth
