Books you wanted to like but just didn't, and ones you thought you wouldn't but did!

What books did you read expecting to love them, or hoping to because of a review or whatever, but just didn't. Which ones did you read because it was there, or didn't really expect to like and them loved it.

I wanted to like Once an Angel by Teresa Medeiros and The Black Lyon by Jude Deveraux but they really fell flat.

I didn't think I'd like Sugar Daddy by Lisa Kleypas but LOVED LOVED LOVED it.

I think "The Black Lyon" has not stood the test of time. I read it way back when it first came out...and it was my FAVORITE book ever. I did a re-read a few years back, and it just didn't do it for me. But I keep it as a favorite, because I always remember that first impact it had on me.

You know I love me my Kleypas...I've got both Sugar Daddy and Blue Eyed Devil on my iPod...but I just can't seem to get up the "umph" to read them...I think I have a hard time with change...and Lisa changing to contemp is what, I think, is holding me back. What's funny is...I've heard nothing but RAVE's about her new contemp's...but I'm still not jumping on. Hmmmm...I'm thinking it will happen soon though...and I'll start them.

Once an Angel was such a huge let down. I will have to pick up that Lisa Kleypas since I do adore her writing. I am leary of the genre change, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Susan Andersen's (one of my favorite author's) latest was a HUGE letdown for me. I'd been waiting SO LONG for that story...and she had created these teenage characters so well, in a previous book, that I just knew they'd get their story someday...and I couldn't wait to read it. I almost wish she'd never written the book...it just ruined those characters for me forever...I'd have been better off with no further telling of their story, than getting the crappy story we got.

"Outlander" was a book/series I didn't think I'd like...and it is one of my all time favorites now...and I constantly recommend it.

I was going thru a phase where I read only "Christian Romance" and I found one By Deann Gist called "The Measure of a Lady". It sounded like a fun-ish story of a woman trying to be a "lady" in a rough newly settled San Franciso. I hated this story. The heroine wasn't prissy and citified she was critical and judgmental. Her unmoving ideals made sure noone could possibly "measure up". I kept reading and kept reading hoping things would turn around. ick. I was just irritated, and relieved when it finally ended.

I read The Bride by Julie Garwood on the recommendation of someone (Cindy!) thinking I'd make my way thru it. (I wasn't reading any historical at the time.) I loved it.

I'm a real fan of paranormal romance and the series to which I started in the genre is Anita Blake by Laurell K Hamilton.

I just loved the first 6 -7 books but since then, they keep letting me down more and more each time.

Anita, who I initially though of as a fun, kinda cute heroine is now so slutty and I feel that the sex scenes kind of absorb the books. I definitely preferred the earlier ones.

Interesting as you are not the only one to make this observation. I'd say I have to agree and I gave up on Anita Blake.

Recently I read The Princess by Jude Deveraux, and after the very high reviews it got on book seller sites I expected to enjoy it, but it irritated me the whole way through.

I had once started "Devil in a Kilt" by Sue-Ellen Wellfonder and put it down a chapter in because it was boring me, then picked it up again months later and wound up absolutely loving it.

On the whole Jude Deveraux has been about 40/60. When she is on she is great, but most were disappointing.

Gone With the Wind started out so slow, but turned into a favorite.

I wanted to like the new Julie Garwood SHADOW DANCE and Johanna Lindsay's latest and both were awful reads. Sadly both were hardcovers.

I have gotten kind of bored with the time travel's by Lynn Kurland, they seem stale but I really enjoyed WITH EVERY BREATH.

I was pretty disappointed in Shadow Dance too. =( Sadly, since I really wanted to love it. I really enjoy Kurland's light style, but I know what you mean. I can't sit and read several in a row.

I have to say I was a bit disappointed in Christine Feehan's latest Drake Sisters novel. I've been waiting for that story for sooo long and it just didn't do it for me. I feel like CF gave Ilya and Jolie short shrift.

OTOH, I picked up JR Ward's Lover Eternal on a whim, not really expecting much and WOW was I wrong. She had me hook, line and sinker!
