Military SciFi

A group for the military scifi fans out there... To me, they are kind of like a scifi version of a romance novel... Are they deep philosophical stories? Not usually... Are the fun to read? Yes!

    The beginning...

Ok... Sorry for the delay's but it's been a busy summer... Most of my Shelfari time has been dedicated to the Apocalypse Lovers group... Another one of my favorite topics...

Anyway, time to start talking Military SciFi...

Tell me your thoughts? I pretty much love the genre... Everything from the 1 night cotton candy stories on up...

Please, feel free to add to the group shelf and invite your friends...

And lastly, if I forgot/forget to tell you... Welcome!

Have you read any books by David Weber of David Feintuch?

I know of Weber but haven't read anything by him yet... Worth it?

I've never read anything by Feintuch... Is this the author you're talking about?

Most of my recent Military SciFi has been the stuff on the group shelf (Shelley, Scalzi, Ringo, Dietz)... I need to look through my bookshelf and pull off some of my older stuff also...

If you like Ringo, You will probably like Weber. In fact, check out the series that they wrote together! First book is March Upcountry.

In reply to Digger's question -- David Weber's books are a good read. Lots of detail and lots of action. But if you hate politics that go with the military action, beware of some of the later Honor Harrington books. Just a personal opinion, but this series has continued longer than it should have.

Try Weber's Old Soldiers if you're not into the Harrington series.

      WOW!

I respect your opinion, but I completely disagree. The Honor Harrington series has gotten better as it has gone along. Politics are a very real part of the military at the upper echelons. In my mind, the series has gotten much more believable over time. it was much harder for me to suspend disbelief during the first 3 books as Honor consistantly overcame odds that she shouldn't have been able to overcome.

I agree with you that sometimes it was hard to accept that Honor was really that skillful or lucky. Of course, success was never without a price.

My caution about politics in the later Harrington books was not a personal one, but a warning to people who don't like heavy political drama along with the space opera aspects. Though reading what I wrote before, I can see why it appeared that way. I thought that the political was a necessary counterbalance to the action, especially the developing insights into the Peeps.

It's not the politics in the later books, but some of the twists that the characters have taken, most especially the relationship between Whitehaven and Honor. It was hard for me to accept what appeared to be behavior counter to their past personal code of conduct. Don't want to say more -- would be spoilers for those who haven't read the later ones.

Never doubt that I agree that Weber is worth reading.

    Hail and well Met,
I wasnt even aware of shelfari, bumped into it looking for info on Rick Shelley books.
I signed up and filled my shelf fairly well, and saw this was a group. Handy since I have been heavily collecting and reading in this genre of SCI-FI, with Sci-fi overall my favorite.

I have read a lot on the group shelf and have most the others.

Like I said Im reading Rick shelley now, Im on Colonel, and have the 13th, Second commonwealth war, and SpecOPS squad books still to read.
Still getting hang around here so will post more later,

The books in the officer sereis are decent, as I expect the others Im going to read are. A couple three things bother me about the series:
      1. all of the officer books run up a great story but end very abruptly. Not such a big deal with the begining books because you know there are more to come, but im on page 225 of Colonel, and it seems to be following the same pattern.

      2. The low tech on infantry weapons, 800 years in the future and main stay is still slug throwers, would have gone a different way, but I just roll with it.

      3. The DMC/Officer series is dead ended at Colonel, and I know Rick Shelley had a very untimely passing. The book covers say he was a national best seller, I wonder if any other authors out there might pick the Rick Shelley Universe up and run with it. He set up a pretty decent Universe Scenario, and there is plenty of room to tell a whole bunch of stories. I guess I can only hope.
