    Looking for a book...

I'm looking for a book written in the 80's or 90's. The heroine is the daughter of a (somewhat) jaded, wealthy business woman. She falls in love with a man who, as it turns out, only wants her for her money. In an attempt to teach her about the truth of men, the mother has her best friend auction her off (I believe) at a bordello. Of course, she wasn't supposed to be bought, but something goes amiss (I know, shocking!) and she becomes the 'property' of the hero. The book is set in the States. The mother is a widow who hated being men's whims (ie jaded) who wants her daughter to follow in her footsteps and spurn the notion of love, as she does. I can't remember any names, or even where in the States the book took place, but I do remember that in the beginning of the book the mother is contemplating her raggedy nails and thinking that her manicurist was going to give her heck I know, not much to go on, but any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks!
