I just finished "Pemberley Remembered" which is actually a romance that takes place in London right after WWII, but it has a Jane Austen thread running through it. Were Darcy and Elizabeth's characters based on real people. This novel finds out.

I am re-reading the classics I loved when I was in school & it is surprising how good they still are..The Man in the Iron Mask, Jane Eyre, Gone With the Wind,The Count of Monte Cristo,so far..seeing the reply from rainlily reminded me of one of my favorites,Rebecca, I will pick it up tomorrow..

The Scarlet Letter and Crime and Punishment are my all time favorite Classics so far...and I'm reading 1984 which is really good, but frighteningly close to reality in my opinion. I enjoy the storylines for Jane Austen's stories, but the wording takes a lot of effort to follow, so I think I'll just stick to the movies for those.

These books are all very good and I have read most of them, but they are identified properly as just classics. A "historical novel" that is a "classic" would be, say, "Gone with the wind" or "Ben-Hur" or "Quo Vadis." I have read all of these but would love a good historical fiction writer. As a specialist in 14th-cent through 18th century, I would dearly love to find people who would want to read or can recommend good historical fiction.

I asked this question on the Historical Fiction page, but since you are a specialist you might have a specific take on the subject. Do books written in the past become historical fiction (I read a lot of Modernist writers as well as turn of the 18th C. picqaresqe books) or are they just old? I myself would lean towards the former since they generally provide a contemporary snapshot. I think the first true "historical" fiction was Walter Scott.
