Abridged vs. Unabridged: What is your take?

I recently decided I would like to read "The Count of Monte Cristo," by Dumas. I was surprised to see that that majority of the editions available are abridged. Has anyone ever read this, in either format? I have to admit, I made the extra effort to seek out the unabridged edition. I think reading the abridged version would make me feel like I was cheating! Does anyone else have any opinions on this?

when i read little women, i read the unabridged story because it was more detailed and a thorough story. i love the book! for me i prefer unabridged books rather than abridged. so unabridged 1 abridged 0!

Abridged versions often lose the beauty an author brings to a book.

I prefer the unabridged version of the book. I want to experience the book in its totality, the abridged one sort of robs me of that experience. =)
