    Writing a Pitch to Publishers

Hi, I work for a literary agency. In the coming months I am supposed to pitch the books that I like/see a market for to publishers. I would like to know the basics of what goes into a pitch because I have never written one, and this is now part of my job; such as what titles should I include ie: Market, Similar Books like the one I am pitching etc. Any helpful pointers? Thanks!

From what I understand the "pitch" is much different depending on whether it is fiction or non-fiction.

In non-fiction it is much more about the credential of the author, the size of the market etc. If you are wrtiting a book about coping with Depression you need to know how many people have it, why THIS author is qualified to discuss the subject on and on.

In fiction I think the important aspects are to determine the "genre" of the work and then what makes it unique or to put it another way why would people choose this one over one of the other ones.

I'm going to guess that pitching a story from your list is similar in some ways to pitching a screenplay. So, this would be my advice since I have tiny bit of experience in that area. My advice to really know the stories you like, find a "hook" to start off they story, and make it as succinct as possible. Just tell the important facts about the story without giving it all away. Finally, practice saying it aloud either to yourself or a friend.
