I locked my 16 month old in the car once....along with the keys. Hubby was away doing training, so I couldn't call him. I was at a grocery store and they called the fire department. I was SO embarassed when they came in the parking lot with sirens BLARING!!! LOL!

My nephew got stuck in a mall rental stroller that was shaped like a car. He tried to climb out the wrong way and got stuck. The fire department had to use the "Jaws of Life" to cut him out of the stupid stroller in the middle of the mall.

LOL That is a classic story and I bet he'll be hearing about it for the rest of his life! I'm going to use it when my 55 lb., 52" six year old whines that he wants to ride in the fire engine cart next time we're in the grocery store...he's big for his age and gets stuck every time he tries to climb in!

The craziest trip we ever had to the ER was because my then 3 year old daughter used her bare foot as a brake while riding her scooter across our brand new wooden deck. She had something like 17 splinters, so I called our doctor who said though it sounded silly, we'd better take her to the ER. It took 3 hours, 1 doctor, 3 nurses, and way too much money to remove all those splinters!
Glad your daughter is okay, bookwormerin!

Ouch! That sounds painful!

Shan, my daughter also thinks that she should use her foot as a brake with the scooter--and she ended up with the worst, nastiest gash on her knee last summer. It's now a huge scar...and she STILL brakes with her foot! We actually took the scooter away for awhile until she started using the brake.
So sorry your poor daughter (and YOU!) had that experience. I can't imagine getting out that many splinters--my girlie panics when I try to remove one splinter.
Here's to a boo-boo free summer for all, I hope! :-)

I knew I couldn't be the only mother out there that had 911 involved in something so weird. I was very embarrassed as well but so thankful for the help. I love reading the stories. Thanks!!

I didn't call 911 but did have to take my oldest to the ER when she was 4. It was the day before pre-school started and she was rolling off my bed (or using it for a slide or something). Anyway, she rolled off, got her arm caught in the side rail at the bottom and broke it! Not the best way to start preschool but it was a clean break. It was just loads of fun trying to explain to the hospital staff just exactly how she broke it!

Glad that your daughter is okay bookwormerin, must have been rather scary ...
I have not had to call an ambulance yet and I have two boys !!
The worst we have had was my younger son broke his arm after falling from stacked chairs (he was trying to reach something in the top of his cupboard). He ended up breaking both bones in his forarm, one a compacted break and had to have it reset under anaesthetic and spent a night in hospital, together with 7 weeks in a cast ! Was not fun at all ...
Oh yes, just remembered a night in the bath when my son was about 2 or 3 and somehow his arm managed to slide into the handle on the side of the bath - I don't really know how to explain but his arm was stuck between the bath and the handle and we could not get it out. My husband happened to be away at the time and I called the neighbour in a totally panicked state and all he could hear over the phone was my son screaming his head off. We managed to get it out with a bit of soap but nonetheless you do panic and your heart falls into your stomach.

That reminds me of the time my daughter got her arm twisted inside her crib slats.

Jewels, I was a mess but I was able to think of soap and olive oil but neither seemed to do the trick. I was freaking out thinking about what if she broke her arm because I had a horrible elbow dislocation and 2 breaks in my radius and ulna and all I was thinking about was how was I going to handle a child with that kind of pain. Luckily for me all worked out fine. Glad your son's arm is better. Did he have to have rehab/physical therapy at all?

The things kids get up to amaze me ... Last school holidays my boys were climbing on the outside of the patio railing and then jumping down onto a wet trampoline !!! You could only imagine the pictures I had going through my head when I found out about this fun game.
Re the broken arm, no we were lucky nothing after it was healed, just had to be careful and make sure he was not in any rough and tumble games as it could break very easily just after the cast comes off ..

I'm so glad your daughter is OK! We also had a "911" experience. When our oldest son (now 17) was 2, I was working full-time in publishing. I was trying to get everything cleared off my desk, because we were leaving on vacation the next day. However, the daycare called me at work, telling me not to panic (HA!), but they had to call 911 because Tyler's arm was stuck in a door. Apparently, after his diaper change, the caregiver took him off the changing table while she cleaned up, and he stuck his arm in the opening of the door by the hinges. His arm started swelling, and they couldn't get him out! I missed the arrival of the firefighters who had to take the door off the hinges to get him out, but I did have the pleasure of sitting with him in the ER for 5 hours to make sure nothing was broken. Needless to say, we were VERY glad to have a week at the beach after that! :-)
Our wild daughter was 1 when she broke her leg--just running on the lawn! The problem was--when we took her to the doctor, he said there was no way it was broken, because she would have been screaming when he touched her leg. After three days of her refusing to put weight on her leg and scooting around on her bottom with her leg stuck out, we took her back to the doctor--with the same reaction. Finally, on day 5 I demanded an x-ray, and on day 6--surprise, surprise--we were told she had a broken leg! Talk about feeling like a terrible mother...poor baby girlie was in a purple cast for 6 weeks. I'm just waiting to see what our Mikey will do...he's the most wild one of all!

i was working at the local Jewel/Osco when my then hubby (M.) called and said he was on the way to the school and could not come to pick me up before he went there because they had to call 911 for my son who was then 5. M. told me not to worry he would call me as soon as he got there to tell me what was going on. 15 min later he still had not called so i called the school after pacing around the managers office and yelling at the manager that i was not leaving his office till i got that call. (Almost lost my job but he felt bad when he heard me call the school back to find out they had taken my son to the ER.) i still did not know what had happened as no one was telling me. As i did not (still do not) drive i started calling friends of mine to pick me up and take me to the ER to see my son. It turns out that he was playing in the playground and stood up under the swinging bridge just as a kid jumped down onto it and cut his head on one of the bolts. He got one staple and the ability to tell the story of how he through up chocolate milk all over the fireman/paramedic when he saw his own blood.
Sep. of 2007 i was home from work after being stung by a hornet and having no feeling in my left hand. (i have a severe but not deadly reaction to being stung.) i got a call from from oldest step daughter's school saying they were looking for M. because the youngest stepdaughter's school had called them unable to find M. and she was being taken to the ER via ambulance. i informed the school i did not know where M. was because i was no longer living with him and we are divorcing but that i would call M.'s sister and tell her to call school and go to ER then i would hunt for M. i called girls aunt told her all i knew she left right away and called the number i was given. They would not tell her anything till she got to ER. Tried to call M. at mother's old house where he was moving into, condo, and cell but could not get him. Called several of his friends and found out he was working a concert, called his Union Hall got Union Steward's cell number and office number and left messages there with all the details i had. Then still not able to get ahold of him i called my old boss from when i did security and asked her to call one of the security guards working the back door to get the message to M. about his daughter. About two hours later i called girl's aunt and found out that girl was found drunk and unconcious throughing up on herself in a Chicago train station by a police officer. Her BA level was .49 almost 5 times the legal limit and she was 14. M. was there by then and dealing with the doctors.
Last but actually first experience with ER for kids. My son was 1 and i was working security at a baseball game when i got a call from my boss through one of the other security guards that they were to take me home right away because M. had to take my son the ER. They took me home and i was stuck waiting for another 45mins. not knowing what was going on. It turns out that the youngest stepdaughter had pushed my son and he fell and hit right next to the corner of his eye on the corner of the bottom bunk and cut it pretty badly. They glued the skin and gave him a butterfly bandage because they were afraid to put a stich that close to his eye. i had to keep checking him through the night to make sure he responded when i touched him and did not develope a concusion. He still has that scar 8 years later.
