Those who multi book read
Started by Jessica S, Friday, June 20 2008. Last post Thursday, July 17 2008.

I was just sitting here looking at all the books I have checked out from the library (won't tell the number because I'm embrassed), and I was wondering how you multi book readers do it. I'm reading three books right now.
Last fall when my oldest was playing soccer I kept one book in the van, one on my night stand and one in the living room. I was just wondering if you have a book for different area's of the house? Do you pick a certain number of books you read..like will you not go over say 3 or 4 books at a time etc.
I was just wondering how other multi book readers do it.

Hi Jessica, well, I read between 1 and 3 books at the same time. It depends. If my "main" book is not too heavy and easy to handle, it'll follow me around, living room, upstairs, on the train. If it's quite big, I might have a different one for on the train, and one of those, or sometimes a third, is for upstairs too.

But I usually try to reduce the number to 1 again, and then, depending on what the next book is, keep to 1 book, or have 2 or 3 on the go. At the moment I have a hard back for up- and downstairs and a paperback in my work-bag, for on the train.

The train book has to be light-ish and have enough pages left to read - horror, the idea of being on the train for a while longer with the last page just read!

Hey JudithAnn, what kind of book do you call a Main book?

Hi Ziwa, my "Main" book is the book that I really wanted to read next, when I was looking at my shelf for a new book; it's the book that I'll be reading most of the time. The other, secondary book, is also one that I want to read, but chosen because of its physical properties, of being lightweight, and not too big. :-)

I usually read 2 to 3 books at a time. Normally, I will go back and forth between 2 of the books and finish both on the same day. The third book is usually something harder for me to read like a classic or non-fiction and I will only read a few pages a day.

I try not to read more than 2 at a time because then it takes me longer, but I usually read opposite subjects.

LOL, you can't be any worse than me...between myself and my two kids, we have 174 items checked out from our two library systems. It's almost scary keeping track of them. And I only read one book at a time!

OMG! Where do you put all of those?

The kids must keep them in their rooms in front of their book cases--they're allowed to take the one or two they're reading out and then put them back and take another one when they're finished.

As for me, I usually keep a pile in the kitchen and a pile underneath the basement end table. We've only lost one book so far and found it in the Bratz bin soon after we paid for it!

Oh. My. Gosh. That is exactly what my kids and I do. I check out books for my kids, we read them and return them as we read them. Often, I check out a ton of books, for myself, just to see if they are ones I would really like to buy or get from paperbackswap.com. I can get really obsessed about a particular subject and request a ton of books and decide what I want to read and/or buy.

I have a sturdy library bag, I bought from our library, and I try to keep them all in there, if they fit. If not I keep a special pile for them. My kids are 4 and 6, a little too young to have them keep track of the library books vs. our own books. At some point soon, I will buy a library bag for my older son to keep track of his books.

I am currently reading 6 books--and have plenty more checked out from the library. I also bought some books this morning! Crazy. I really need to finish the ones I've started and get down to one. But iIalways finish them, being a little OCD, but I'm trying to stop doing that if a book is acrappy and i don't love it. I can't help it though, I just get so excited about the books I want to read. And working in a book store doesn't help either.

Julie, I have a simliar problem--a bunch of kids, two libraries we use, and we've checked out as many as 65-70 books before (I just can't carry anymore!). Nothing makes me crazier than a missing library book!

I mostly only read one novel but 2 self help, history, or spirituality books at once. I have tried in the past to read 2 novels but then I got lost with characters etc., so now I only read one at a time. I also check out a ton of books at the library and my hold list is so long, that is embarrassing. I am in there usually 3 times a week picking up new books. Luckily so far I haven't missed a due date.

Like Julie, we have tons of books checked out. I alone have about 45 checked out and I think the girls have similar numbers to me. That doesn't include the hundreds of books I own that I haven't read. I'm usually reading 2 or 3 books at once. I have bookmarks in others but if I've kind of lost interest in them, they get shoved to the side. Usually whatever book is holding my interest at the time is the one that I carry with me, but if it's a heavy book (in size or subject matter), I'll put a lighter paperback in my bag and save the heavy for home.

With me it is one book at a time. I have tried reading two, but this did not go well. I would somehow hold on to one book and leave the second for later.

This must sound extremely weird to most of you. Libraries in Bangalore are few and far between, and the collection and variety of books not that rich either!! Of course we have the British Library which is great on both the collection and variety and the City Library too, but while i have been to the former a couple of times (too far for me), I have not been to the latter at all. Like a blessing, bookshops largely make up for this.

If I'm lucky, I'm not multi-book reading.
I'm usually multi-book reading.
No, I don't have special books in special places.
I try to simply have something handy when the time becomes available to read.
Lately, I've taken to carrying a tote bag with multiple books in it.
I get random bits of time to read (usually when I least expect it).
Which book I read depends on the mood I'm in at that given minute.
If the cover is lurid and I forgot my book cover, I won't read it in a public place.
Luckily, most of my stuff is fine bookcover-wise.

What bothers me of late are the stories that I'm reading that are purely on my computer.
No, I don't mean fan fic or online stories.
I'm talking about a manuscript that I'm reading for an author.
I'm also talking about the free books that I'm receiving from TOR.
I can't just read them when the time is convenient.
I have to be able to access my home computer ... the one in the Family room in particular.

How do you like your Kindle? Do you read alot of books on it? I would love to buy one but haven't heard many comments on it.

Thanks!
