The book (1981), the movie (1983) "The Hunger" immediately comes to mind. I saw the movie then read the book, so the main characters had an identity that remains etched on my mind. If I had to decide which was better, I would say it was the book but that's almost always the case. There are dramatic differences in the storyline of the book and the plot of the movie but time has proven both of them to be classics.

The movie follows the book line-by-line and includes everything.

Although a lot of people seemed to have been baffled by it, the movie BELOVED, based on Toni Morrison's novel, was one of the truest adaptations of a major novel to film that I've ever seen. It was also one of the few where the film actually gave me a better understanding of certain parts of the book.

HU Seita, yes, they did leave loads out but there was SO]O]O] much. I read it as a trilogy in one book and all the extras at the end of the story, what happened AFTER the journy to throw the ring into the fires of MOunt DOom, who had which children, the story of the elves, the kings of the dwarfs etc. How could the film comptete with so much, and uncut on DVD, the fillms are so much longer than the versions put out on t.v. these days.

I think High Fidelity does. It is just like the book except the setting.

I think The Old Man and the Sea portrays the book the best.

Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea is one of my favorite books and I am about to destroy my vision of it ;) by watching the movies.

The Hobbit will be made into 2 movies. Right now the plan is to write for the rest of this year. 2009 will be dedicated to pre-production on both movies and 2010 will be the year to shoot both films back to back with The Hobbit being released December 2011 and movie 2 in December 2012. 2011 is the 10 year release date anniversary of the Fellowship movie.

The Kite Runner. I saw the movie first and the book was no better--was just a screenplay for the movie. Likewise, Night of the Hunter, In Cold Blood, Day of the Jackal and The Age of Innocence. Also, the Namesake followed the book and was just as good. Atonement, excellent as a movie, conveyed the character of the book as well as a film could.

The Outsiders is word for word like the book. It doesn't even seem like they needed to write a script.

I think a lot of writers are doing just that, writing for movies, hoping that they will get swooped up.

"Memoirs of A Geisha" was a great movie. Even if I hadn't loved the book before, it would still make a very good film!!

I just finished reading Atonement and I thought that the movie really followed very closely to the book (until the very end.) Definitely my favorite adaptation of a book into a movie.

One book that was really good is "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. The movie, made in 1990, is a really good adaptation. One book I didn't like "White Oleander" was made into a movie that was actually a little bit better, only because it was more believable. I hated the book. NOBODY could possibly have as much bad luck as the character, Astrid. Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman was adapted into a movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, and it was a pretty decent adaptation. Anyone have any thots? And if you haven't seen The Handmaids Tale or read the book DO IT! :)

'American Psycho' because the book read almost like a screenplay. The movie was very true to the book and the main character.

Hi, I felt, amongst so many other movies from books, that you should see the movie first then read the book. the other way around usually annoys me so much. SOme though, come out o.k. 'Blade RUnner' had lots more then DO Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the movie brought everythin g to life more vividly.
