    The Endless

    Save Changes Cancel

Hi all! I'm new to the group (and to Shelfari) and I haven't seen any discussion about The Endless. So, who is your favorite of the seven and why?

Destruction, because I love the line "I can pretend that things last."

I believe it's from Brief Lives. The entire quote is, "Destruction did not cease with my abandonment of my realm, no more than people would cease to dream should you abandon yours. Perhaps it's more uncontrolled, wilder. Perhaps not. But it's no longer anyone's responsibility. I like the stars. It's the illusion of permanence, I think. I mean, they're always flaring up and caving in and going out. But from here, I can pretend... I can pretend that things last. I can pretend that lives last longer than moments. Gods come, and gods go. Mortals flicker and flash and fade. Worlds don't last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend."

I remember it now. What always struck me about destruction (pun very much intended) was his lack of ego. I believe Dream had a sense of duty but HUGE ego, Destruction however didn't want to be adored he just wanted a simple life.

My favorite has to be Delirium. It's just a plus that she's modeled after Kathy Acker (although Tori Amos often gets the credit).

I thought Death was modeled after Tori Amos.

I've just finished reading the first in the Sandman series, so I really only know Dream, and have a brief glimpse into Death. I like what I know of Death so far. I'm very intrigued to me the rest of the Endless.

Delirium because she can be anything she wants to be.
