All right, so I know I'm not the most pro-active group administrator out there, but I do try and keep this group ticking along. This thread is for all those questions that don't seem to fit into any other discussion and don't seem worthy of their own discussion thread. If you have a question for me about this group or what you can and can't do in this group, then here's where to post it.
As a kicking off point, here's a few general rules/notes
1. What is the New Author Collective?
The New Author Collective is a group for newly published authors. Most of the people here only have one book published, some have a couple published (and good for them), but primarily, the group is here to promote those folks just starting out in their writing career.
2. Can I stick my book on the shelf?
If you fit into the category of "New Author," sure, stick it on the shelf, that's the whole point. The group is here to help you and your book get some exposure.
3. Can I stick all my published books on the shelf?
Please don't. Pick your first/first in the series/favorite of yours and use that. If people are interested, they will come and seek you out. This group works by giving everyone a fair crack of the whip - so you all get one book space on the shelf to market your author brand.
3. Can I stick books I like/have read on the shelf?
Noooooooo! No! No! and No! This shelf is not another shelf for your home library, this is a shelf for the books of the New Authors. If I see books on here that don't belong, I shall remove them. (Yes, I know there's a Tolkein Box set on our shelf right now and for reasons unexplained to me, I can't remove it. I am talking to Shelfari admin people to fix that. Bear with me)
4. Can I invite non-authors to the group?
Absolutely, again, that's the whole point. We want to be visible to people, not just be a group of new authors looking at each others books. If you see people in other groups/discussions bemoaning the fact they can't find anything new to read or they're looking for something new, point them this way. Please do make them aware of point #3 above though. Thanks. Similarly, if you come across other New Authors on Shelfari, please feel free to point them this direction.
4. I've joined and stuck my book on the shelf. What now?
Watch your book sales skyrocket! No, seriously, first thing you should do is stick your book's synopsis in the "Synopses" thread so that everyone here and everyone visiting knows what your book is about. After that, take a look around the discussion threads and get involved.
5. I've noticed you don't have a "Shameless Self Promotion" thread. Why is that?
Because this entire group is about Shameless Self Promotion - we're just not blase enough to actually call it that. Also, as a new author, you are here among your equals, so as a sign of respect to your peers, no one person/book should be getting any more limelight than any other. If you have good news, sure, tell us. You can find the thread "Post your news" in the discussions and put it there, that's what it's there for - but anything that even smells remotely like "This is my book and it's great and you should all go out and buy it." Will most likely get deleted. Fortunately, you're all pretty nice folk and for the lifetime of this group I've never had to do that, I hope it stays that way.
Any other comments/questions. Please holler here. I'll do my best to get to them in a timely fashion.
