"WTF?"

Ever started reading a book that everyone else seems to love and you just don't get the attraction? Or picked up a book from an author you usually love and wondered if the latest offering was written while talking on the phone? Or perhaps you read the first three chapters of a book and still can't figure out what's going on, who the characters...more »

    Wicked - can't..... get..... started......

I bought Wicked in paperback - heard it was excellent, fun, a good story. I can't get past Chapter 1. I don't get it. Not interesting.

I've heard this before. Which is why I never picked it up...

Interesting what people get into. Like The Da Vinci Code.

If you really fight through, it starts to pick up (after the first 100 pages or so). However, I found the end to be dis-jointed and un-satisfying.

    Just fair warning : )

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I tried to read it... I really did... but I just couldn't do it!
Went and saw the show in the West End while on our honeymoon and loved it... thought I would try Maguire's CONFESSIONS OF AN UGLY STEPSISTER... and had the same thing happen...
I guess it's just his writing style, but it just doesn't work for me...

Wicked is # 1 on my "WTF" list! I had heard so many incredible things about it, I actually was dumb enough to buy all of them!!! I have tried at least a dozen times and have never passed the first chapter. Not only a waste of time, but a waste of shelf space...

Kbest, you've got me beat. I've tried only three, four times before giving up! Maybe it makes a better Broadway musical. ;)

This book is a very challenging read. I really wanted to read it, started it, and just happened to see that B&N was having an online discussion with McQuire, so I finished it. I loved it, but solely because of the discussion. If I had to suffer through it by myself, would not have been as enjoyable. It's like a high school English class and the classics. Only can read Crime and Punishment with someone there to wade you through it! But then a pretty great book! I did enjoy Wicked though- maybe read it with another pal? I am going to do that with Son of a Witch- a friend and I want to read it, but going to do it at the same time so we can discuss.

WARNING- if you liked the musical and then are going to read the book, don't get your hopes up! Very different.

I had the opposite problem. I really got into the book when I first started reading it but when I got to the middle. After they left school. It became really hard for me to go on. I had to stop, I couldn't force my mind to wrap around the story anymore. I did not even get to read how she died or what happened to her son.

Oh dear. I'm reading it now and am so far enjoying it - - but of course I haven't got to the part you are referring to yet. They are still in school now. Shoot - - I hope I am not wasting my time!
