Movie Versions of Books

This group is about all the movies that have been made from books. Were they true to the spirit of the novel? And what about books adapted from movies? Would you watch a movie based on a book you loved or avoid it?

Adding movies to your shelf

Seriously, if you've seen the movie but not read the book, would you add it to your shelf?

If you think the movie is good, why not? The Count of Monte Cristo (which I own) is one of my favorite movies, but I haven't read the book yet (it's been sitting on my shelf waiting to be read for a LONG time).

Yeah, I have Pete Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy but I have no intention of putting the books on my reading shelf anytime soon. I read them some years ago but the convoluted dialog and keeping the three story lines straight (not to mention the appendices with the copious backstory) made them a frustrating read, to say the least. I know that Jackson made some changes to the story but give me the movies anytime!

Tolkien's prose is very dense but once you have faces to assign tot he names it is much easier to digest. Tho--I would avoid the Silmarillion it is worse than Joyce's nonsense. (Finnegan's Wake)

I gave up on the trilogy. I finished The Hobbit but after getting stuck in the forest in the Fellowship of the Rings, I just stopped. To be honest, I got really bored...I guess Tolkien isn't really my cup of tea. I prefer the movie definitely.
