High school literature teachers

Don't you want to talk about books with people who teach them? I am just finishing a busy first year of teaching high school English and journalism...I'd love to see what English teachers are reading this summer and share ideas on how to bring books to life for high school students.

Suggestions for novels in World History?

    Save Changes Cancel
I'm teaching integrated LA and world history next year and am looking for novels that would support this.

I'm looking for books like Red Scarf Girl, that have fairly high readability, and are appealing to 10th graders

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Just finished reading Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. It's an accessible and engaging novel we just added to next year's novel selections for our high schoolers. Quick Synopsis: In 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina, her mother, and brother are pulled from their Lithuanian home by Soviet guards and sent to Siberia, where her father is sentenced to death in a prison camp while she fights for her life, vowing to honor her family and the thousands like hers by burying her story in a jar on Lithuanian soil. Based on the author’s family, includes a historical note.

I put together an integrated playwriting lesson plan using Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" last year. The kids enjoyed the variety found in the short story collection.

Letters from Rifka by Karen Hesse: This is a story of a Russian girl and her family's emigration from Russia to Ellis Island in 1919 and 1920. The story is told through letters and won the Christopher Medal and was a ALA/YALSA Best Book for Young Adults. It's also a relatively quick-read at 148 pages.

It's not exactly what you're describing, but I teach my sophomores THE KING MUST DIE by Mary Renault. It's a realistic retelling of the Theseus myth...in case you're looking for something from the ancient world.

One of my 10th grade favorites was The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. I also loved All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque.
