High school literature teachers

Don't you want to talk about books with people who teach them? I am just finishing a busy first year of teaching high school English and journalism...I'd love to see what English teachers are reading this summer and share ideas on how to bring books to life for high school students.

    Starting a Reading Blog

Hi all. Our school has been participating in the Letters about Literature contest for a couple of years now with some success (two of our students have won), but the problem is always how to get students to read during the summer to prepare for the contest. I ran across a www.edublogs.org, which helps teachers set up a blog for their classes. I have a vague idea of what I want to do, but I could use more ideas. Basically, our director has chosen some books on the "approved" list and I want students to read at least one book. I want them to become thoroughly familiarized with the story and to post a few comments about their chosen book. As you may know, the letter for the contest is NOT a book report, or an "I love your book" letter, but a "how this book changed me" letter.

I guess what I'm asking is what would you do? or what DO you do if your school participates in this contest? thanks!

    Hi Raspberry,

This group isn't all that active to my dismay so you may well not get many reponses. I have done this assignment with limited effect with my Writing Workshop classes. Kudos to you for getting it to work. I get a lot of " I've never read a book". :(
