At the top, this list says "contains 0 books" which, of course, is incorrect. In addition, if you try to display page two of the list, it shows an empty page as if the list no longer exists.

Bizarre. When I clicked the edit button for that list & then cancelled, it went to a different list URL with no books at all. I'm definitely going to pass this onto our engineers.

I see the issue - it's the title of the list, which includes a spaced dash.

The resulting URL codes the spaced dash as three dashes (---), but the pagination coding of the site doesn't carry that over when you go to Page 2; instead, it goes to Page 2 of this link http://www.shelfari.com/series/Pulitzer-Prize-Winners-Fiction?Page=2 - note the single dash in the URL.

Since this single-dash-list didn't previously exist, it showed as containing no content. I've taken the liberty of filling in this "phantom" list with the Pulitzer Prize winners, so you can delete the original list if you like. Please let me know if this fixes the issue.

http://www.shelfari.com/series/Barnes-amp-Noble-Leatherbound-Classics?Page=1 is correctly set as a publisher-based series but it is displaying under the standard series from the list accessible via my home page.

    DL

Copied from original thread (now locked). Yes - it still appears in my standard series list but when I attempt to open it, the list appears as if it has been deleted. (shows "0" books.) Suspect this may be related to the "amp" in the title.

http://www.shelfari.com/series/Barnes-amp-amp-Noble-Leatherbound-Classics appears in the "Universe" lists even though it displays (properly) as an edition-based publisher series.

I'm trying to get my title edited for "From the Clutches of Evil" to have A Jillian Bradley Mystery (Volume 3) after the title. Now it reads, "From the Clutches of Evil" (A Jillian Bradley Mystery) with no volume number listed. Thanks for any help you can give me, or simply unlock my edit so I can make the change myself.

There is something odd with this list: http://www.shelfari.com/series/Heinlein-Juveniles

it should be a publisher-based list but no matter what I do most of the books display it as if it was a standard series on top of their title. I've tried to edit the type from the list page and I tried to remove and to re-add the book to the list from the book page with no result.

There are student editions and "regular" editions for both of these. And yes, there are differences between the two. I've heard that the two editions were combined before, but I think that they should be separate because there is a significant differences in page counts and one is for adults while the other is for teens. Anywho, I think that both should be split because of these reasons.

I've cleaned up the XXXenophile series as best I can, but a Librarian will need to go in and fix the issues with this entry:

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/3959074/The-XXXenophile-Collection-Vol-3

This entry is listed as XXXenophile Collection volume 3, but the cover and information is correct for volume 4. It has the covers for volumes 2 and 3 listed as alternate editions. There is an entry for volume 2, which has no cover, here:

    http://www.shelfari.com/books/26353306/The-XXXenophile-Collection-Volume-Two-2

But, there is no separate entry for volume 4, nor is there another entry for volume 3. My recommendation would be to change the (current) volume 3 to volume 4, since the internal information is correct for that volume; remove the volume 2 and 3 covers from it; give the volume 2 cover to volume 2; and create a new entry for volume 3 which has the correct cover.

http://www.shelfari.com/series/Pulitzer-Prize-Winners-Fiction should be an authoritative list. Don't know when it was changed to a standard series. I created this list and added the "goon squad" book the day the prize was announced. However, that edit (sometime in August, IIRC) doesn't appear on the list. Someone did add (again) the book recently.

Does Shelfari allow the change of series/list type when editing via the book page even when the list is larger than would allow a member to change that type directly from the series/list itself?

Umm... I don't think it should be universe (although that particular list is a mess) There are two series in it one is the original series "Conan" started by Howard finished by Jordan and the other one is "Adventures of Conan" (see here: http://www.shelfari.com/series/Conan-Adventures-of-Conan ) which was written after by various authors (many books in the current "Conan" series should be in the "Adventures of Conan"). All books center around Conan though..... unless what you mean is that this one should be renamed into a general Conan universe list in which one can dump all the series that are related to Conan but in that case the list should be also renamed to Conan (universe) or something similar to avoid confusion.

Maybe I should explain my thoughts.

I think if it is going to be a standard series it should only have the original Robert E. Howard stories in it. If it is going to remain a dumpsite for everything that has “Conan” in the title, it should be made a universe for everything Conan (and if that involves changing its name to “Conan (universe)”, go right ahead).
If someone wants to sort it out into all the little pastiche series and whatnot, be my guest.

As it is, this series is a total mess and could use whatever help it can get.

If you go to each book's detail page, you can input a series under Series and Lists. Once you type in the name of the series for one of the books, the series will be created and you can either add the other books from the series page or go to each books page to add the series there.

Duh - sorry - you wish for it to be properly capitalized! Only Amanda can change the name of a series/list. Because there are fewer than 20 items, it may just be quicker to create a new series and remove the old one.

Learned a lot from member Ray Acosta about the (lack of) ease-of-use of the edition-specific lists. (See posting conversation starting here - http://www.shelfari.com/groups/10713/discussions/414180/Edit-Problem . The edition-based info is about mid thread but, I think, the whole thread needs to be read so I didn't link to that specific posting.)

Anyway - is it by design or a bug that any book I have within which is combined an edition-specific entry will still have my "green" button and "bookmarks" show up on that edition-specific list? This seems wrong to me. After all, the purpose of those lists is to show, duh, "specific" editions. If I have none of those editions, I shouldn't - on that list view only - see those "green" markers.

Right? Otherwise, what is the point? The "you have x of y books on "List name (edition specific)" will be incorrect.

    Am I misunderstanding this thing?

    DL

This would apply, for my use, specifically to http://www.shelfari.com/series/Folio-Society?Page=1. Currently no one has actually "specified" editions on that list. I was about to start work on that piece of things when my question occurred. Even though I do NOT have the Folio Society of the two for which I specified an edition, this list shows that I DO have it.

Hi DL--I'll need to check with the team about the edition-based lists regarding whether it was built or if there's a bug with showing books you have on your shelf (regardless of whether you have that specific edition).

UPDATE: This is by design. The EDIT button (& bookmark) indicate that you have a book on your shelf--EDIT is book based, not edition based. On the series & lists pages we're referring to books/collections & not specific editions as it relates to a member's shelf. Part of the reason behind this is that we don't force you to select your specific edition when you add a book to your shelf, you can just add the book. It can get a little complicated either way.

I was expecting this. I remember when the feature was first deployed it was in response to a request, frankly, that wanted to show the "pretty" covers associated with a series. That was before you guys gifted us with the nifty new series/lists types and, at that time, the feature was restricted to community lists. In that case, no big deal, as "community" lists tend to be more a mish-mash of things.

However, now that we have "publisher-specific" lists, the whole definition of those things has shifted. Would it be impossible to make that specific list type be a true "edition specific" list? Meaning that the system will not recognize my having an entry if that specific edition is not what I selected? This approach does, in fact, line up with the definition of that type of list.

This wouldn't affect any of the functionality of adding a book to my shelf. It would affect only the display of that series as regarding my shelf and the accuracy of tracking goals associated with that list.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

'nother thing: If I have a book on my wish list, the series/lists associated with that book will indicate that I have the book - which I do not. I use these lists to guide purchases. I just realized this was happening when I went to open one of the books showing on the series and couldn't find it on my IRL shelf. Neither the book page nor the series display indicated that "gift box" which would have clued me in. Once your shelf is really large (mine is currently 6612) scanning through the shelf is just impossible. Far easier to simply bring up the title as the book page and go with the "button/flag" color.

It is my opinion that the gift box should appear on every display when that book is on your Wish list. Seeing it ONLY on my shelf doesn't help me much. That icon doesn't appear on the "read next" displays either.

I also would really like for the "bookmark/flag" shown on a book to be driven by "read/not read" - could it, perhaps, be - oh, I don't know - something like "yellow" (not read), "pink" (plan to read), and let the "green" be "read"?

Those are "nice to have" but that wish list thing is actually a "need."

    Thanks,

    DL

Hi. There are two versions of The Sands Of Time in the above series, but the Kindle version is the one that's currently available. Is there any way to combine the two, or merge any readers from the other onto this version?

    Many thanks,

Hi Jamie--You can remove editions that don't belong with Vol 3 from the Editions tab on the book page. When you hover near the edition you'll see "edit this set" and then you can select specific editions to separate.

There is a series called: CBC Canada Reads.

The winner last year was a book called The Best Laid Plans.

If you look at the series list (http://www.shelfari.com/awards/CBC-Canada-Reads), The Best Laid Plans is the 5th book appearing on the list.

Click on the book (http://www.shelfari.com/books/3589939/The-Best-Laid-Plans) and scroll down to the Series section. It is not listed there. I even clicked on the section history and it is not appearing there at all, yet it appears in the list.

I'm sure I was the one who added it a while ago, so I'm not sure why it's not even appearing in the history... and why it's in the entire list of the series, but the series is not appearing on the book's page.

    Odd...

Well, I read the definitions for volume in the lexicon. Still a little confused though. They weren't published as a set. Each volume was published individually. It's my belief that they should probably be separated but I'm still unsure.

Yes - they should be separated. The ONLY real decision maker question is whether the two editions/volumes have the same content. These do not, correct? Therefore they should be separated. That was the part of the guidelines I was hoping you'd notice.

BTW - the question has nothing to do with the cover. Covers can be wrong and can be replaced.

The question and answer depend solely and exclusively on the content of each volume. Read the sections in the guidelines about combining and those on separating editions. That is why I linked you to the whole "group" - not just one portion of it. Make sense?

The Magic of Reality has illustrations for every page, videos in each chapter and a game in each chapter. They are a different editions of the books and I was just wondering if there was any way to indicate that the version of the book I own is the iPad version of Magic of Reality or even the Space Dog published iPad version of Treasure Island.

I'm fairly new to editing so please bear with me.

I've noticed two problems with the Soul Screamer series. ( http://www.shelfari.com/series/Soul-Screamers )

http://www.shelfari.com/books/18164875/Enthralled keeps getting added to the series list, when Enthralled is an anthology, with many contributing authors with short stories form their own series.
Included in the collection IS Niederwald by Rachel Vincent which DOES take place in the Soul Screamer world. I'm not sure but I don't believe it should be included in the series list. But then I don't know where it should go, if anywhere.. (Should be marked as "Collective Works" or something?)

Secondly, there are two prequels in the series. The first being book 0 ( http://www.shelfari.com/books/12090289/My-Soul-to-Lose ) and the second being 3.5 ( http://www.shelfari.com/books/17722035/Reaper ) .
Now I'm not sure if there is any way to fix that, as it's in between two books in the series, but I thought I'd still address it.

Also there's two problems with the Guardian Trilogy ( http://www.shelfari.com/series/Guardian-Trilogy )
The first book Fallen ( http://www.shelfari.com/books/15102464/Fallen ) appears to be included in the series. But when you look at the series list it doesn't appear.
I've tried adding it a few times. Since I haven't done that before I thought maybe I'd made a mistake, but it just won't take the change. Unless of course a normal member can't do that.

Also someone put a cover of Fallen by Lauren Kate on that same page (http://www.shelfari.com/books/15102464/Fallen) which is by Laury Falter.

Hope this wasn't too much trouble. Thanks!

      Hi AliceDiedAgain,

I will try to address each of your concerns below.

      1. Regarding the Soul Screamer series; Any anthology that contains a short story specific to the series would in fact be included on the series page. Most often you will find that it is also included on the other series lists for which the separate stories pertain to. In other words, it will be on the Soul Screamers series list AND the Darkest Powers series list for Kelly Armstrong's story. Anthologies would not be marked collective works because, even though they are separate stories contained within one book - these stories are NOT available as individual stories. That is what defines a collective work here on Shelfari - the stories or books can all be found as separate items, which anthologies generally are not.

      2. The prequel, My Soul to Lose, is listed on the series list as book 0, but since Shelfari does not support half numbers, 3.5 in this case, the other short story, Reaper, will remain at the bottom of the series list. One way to address this is to edit the description section on the books detail page and state that this is a short story meant to be read as book 3.5 (I've done this for you, but feel free to reword yourself.) The other way around it is to create a new series list that would display the books in Reading Order. For example, you would name the new series list Soul Screamers Reading Order, and then put the books in the order of which they are meant to be read, even though that bumps the numbers off by one. (If you are going to do this, please do not change the current series list - you will actually need to create a new one.) Check out the series section for this book as an example: http://www.shelfari.com/books/3683125/One-Foot-in-the-Grave

      3. The Guardian series seemed to have a glitch regarding book one, Fallen, as you pointed out. I was able to delete it from the series list and add it back in and that seemed to work, as now all 3 books are displaying correctly.

      4. As for the inaccurate cover image, when viewing the cover pages you can always report an inaccurate cover using the link at the bottom of the page that states: "If you see an inaccurate cover on this page, please report it." It will then go into the Librarian's queue and we will take a look at it. I've went ahead and deleted the incorrect cover from Lauren Kate, and it should update shortly.

Hope that covers everything. Let us know if you have any further questions. I would also suggest that you take a look at the editing guidelines, as it contains lots of helpful information. http://www.shelfari.com/groups/59851/about

It is acceptable for such duplicate lists to exist. Keep in mind that there are members of Shelfari who do not use English as a 1st language.

What is important is that the books, themselves, are combined and the combined version has a book page using English (when an English version exists.)

      Malin,

Both the existing lists will survive the combination process. If each list is complete now (pre-combination), then each list will be complete post-combination. You won't need to alter the lists at all.

The only difference will be that, post-combination, each list will display the (hopefully) English book page for each entry on the list.

      Does that help?

      Let me know.

      Mailn,

      Another point:

We ask that you please do not use the standard series lists (Or Universe list) for general combination procedures. These lists form the basis for the "What to read" next series feature. When you add books to the list for the sole purpose of creating a combination request, anyone who has at least one book on that list will see his "What to read next" series feature show each and every book you've added as a next-read candidate. Obviously that would be an inaccurate state for him.

Use the standard search features or build yourself a uniquely named Community list to put those combination candidates together. If there are only one or two books for each combination request, use the "Bookid: (number),(number)...(number)" approach on the Shelfari search bar and you will see only those books appear. Easy to combine from there!

      Helpful?

Hi I am new here, so hope I am doing the right thing! lol

One of the things I did notice pretty early on was when doing searches of book series was the lack of chronological order. This is a perfect example. The series of Torchwood novels, now 18 in total, are completely out of order in the search system, even though they are numbered. And other non-novel, but Torchwood related books are falling in between the novel. Is there anyway these can be placed in chronological order and all other Torchwood (non-novel) related books follow after the novels?

You are doing a general search for Torchwood, so it finds anything related to Torchwood. If you look at the series listing http://www.shelfari.com/series/Torchwood they are in order.

Shelfari bases its search results on Amazon data, so I am unsure how they process to show the search results.

I felt it was a great book but no one read it! (ouch) So during 2011, I retitled it as, "Unjustly Accused" and I did sell a few copies. If you can see my shelf, I need to get rid of Mother Murder... although I have pulled it completely off ther market, Create Space had problems getting them confused and still today, my computer reads "Unjustly Accused" when I hold my curser over Mother Murder.... anyway, advise???

I mistyped the name of a Series (added the series) -

    http://www.shelfari.com/series/Susannah-and-the-Spy

    It should be instead
    http://www.shelfari.com/series/Susanna-and-the-Spy

(No "h" at the end of Susanna)

I've corrected it in assigning the books to the series but the "h" name version of the series itself should be deleted?

    Thanks

I think that now that the series with the misspelling has no books in it, it will be deleted from the database automatically, but others can correct me if that's wrong.

Hi Karina--You can begin creating a series or list from a specific book. On the book page, scroll down to the Series & Lists section and click the edit button. If this is your first time creating a list, I'd recommend viewing the guidelines (they're available after you click to edit) to make sure you designate the right kind of list.

I accidentally posted this as a separate discussion when it would've been more appropriate here:

I know that if there is one prequel, it is listed as book 0 in a list. What if there are multiple prequel novellas as in the case on Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas? The prequels are The Assassin and the Pirate Lord, The Assassin and the Desert, The Assassin and the Underworld.
How does the numbering work in this case?

    http://www.shelfari.com/series/Throne-of-Glass

PheonixFalls suggested negative numbering. Is that what usually happens?

Hi Eliene--You could certainly use negative numbering. It's not very common for books to have more than one prequel, so it doesn't tend to come up much.

While trying to add my paperback copy of Born With the Dead Three Novellas by Robert Silverberg, I discovered (after I uploaded a picture of the cover and asked that several be combined), that a copy of my book was actually included in the listing for Born With the Dead/ The Saliva Tree (Tor Double Novel #3). Then when I checked the covers for this combo book, I found that most of the covers shown for it should actually be included with Born With the Dead Three Novellas. My paperback is a Berkley Mass market paperback, ISBN 0-425-04156-5. I apologize if I made this situation worse but hopefully, someone can separate the Tor Double Novel #3 out and then combine what's left with my addition. Is that clear as mud???? Please let me know if I can tell you anything else that will help!

Sorry again--I realized that I forgot to include the URL: http://www.shelfari.com/search/books?Keywords=Born%20With%20the%20Dead%20Robert%20Silverberg

    Hello,

I'm hoping to change the title of one of my books which currently reads, Few are Chosen (Yarthan Trilogy Part I) - I'm not sure how, it was Yarthan in beta but it came out in September 2010 and was K'Barthan from the get go... I've edited it to read Few Are Chosen, K'Barthan Trilogy: Part 1. I edited it a couple of months ago so I was just wondering how long the change is likely to take. Otherwise is it possible to unlock my permission to edit so I can make the change myself? I am rather aware that if it fails to comply with guidelines there's nothing I can do because I'm locked out of editing in any way at the moment. How long do changes like this usually take?

Many thanks for any help or pointers you can give me. You can find it here http://www.shelfari.com/books/21209279/Few-are-Chosen-%28Yarthan-Trilogy-Part-I%29/edit

There are only 4 book in that list. Just create a new one and delete the old one. Trust me. That will be faster than waiting for "shelfari" to do it and no one else can change the title (directly) of a list.

BTW.. That shouldn't be a standard series. I changed it to an edition-specific publisher list.

But the reason I put the request in was because I thought then the wrong series called Tommy Hambleton (or whatever it may be) would be then just hanging around empty. Or does Shelfari delete empty series after a while?

Glad you were able to get things done.

      5) Choose "move to a different book" for the specific edition you wish to separate. Follow the 2 step process it then displays (1 at a time display).

Is this what gave you a different result? If so, do you remember what that "result" was?

Some of the issue with the book may have to do with the feed from Amazon. The straight link back brings you to the dtb edition of the book. I did a search to get to the kindle edition and update the description to match the description on Amazon figuring that many would be adding this today since it was a Deal of the Day yesterday.

I use Chrome and did not even think of switching browsers to see if the result would be different. It does make sense that if the display is different at one point in the steps that it could also differ later.

Step 5a) initially gave me some problems, in part because of how it displays on an iPad, which is where I do most of my editing.
"5a) (Optional) If there already exists an edition on the Shelfari catalog with which this separated editions should be combined, the first step provides a search bar for you to find that existing edition. When you "select" an edition from the search results the system provides, it will display on that small area so that you can be certain the correct edition was found. If there doesn't exist such an edition or if you just don't want to mess with it, you can select "skip this step" found above the search bar in this small area."

I think about this step as having 3 sub-parts:

      i) type the name of the book into the search box. Shelfari will offer you possible searches as you do that (as the main search bar does), but may not offer you the one you want. If it offers you the book name you want select it. If not, finish typing the book name into the search box and select "search". [I have on occasion forgotten to click on search...] if the book comes up in the search, select it, and move on to step 5b)

ii) if the book doesn't come up in the search but you know it exists on shelfari already [eg, on the iPad, I can't scroll down in the display to see anything more than the first 4-5 books - the way it comes up on the iPad, I can't use scroll], I often cancel the separation process, run the search in the main search bar, which lets me see the full list (and also select "more results") - if the book comes up there, I get the bookid from the URL and then use that in the separation search box instead of the name (ie, "bookid: ##") - I can then select it and move on to step 5b)

iii) if the book doesn't seem to exist yet on shelfari as a separate record, I select "skip this step" which effectively separates the edition to a standalone book page, and move on to step 5b)

Nospin, does any of that help identify what might have gone wrong?

      posted 1 year ago. ( permalink )
    • Nospin

Yes, Booklover, I think your separation of the process does help (or would have). I think if I had known about inserting the book id in the search it may have gone smoother.

Now I know to try another browser and break down the steps as you indicated.

      Thank you.

Hi, I'm trying to list my book, Platinum Passion (Gods of Love #1) as Book 1 of a series called Gods of Love, but when I do, it shows up as Book 1 of 5. I'm about to publish Book 2 and there will only be 3 books in my series, so there should only be 1 book showing in this series under my name. This series was originally going to be called "the erotes" but I got hits on that when I did an Amazon search. So I changed it to Gods of Love, searched Amazon first and got no hits.

The other books that it is linking to are for a different author, who has obviously listed his books in a series also called Gods of Love. Not sure if his books were given that series name after mine came out? Or if the Amazon search just didn't pick up his series name.

Not sure what to do! I actually have that series name on my book covers. How do I separate these two out, so that his books are not listed as part of my Gods of Love series, and vice versa?

You can add/remove books from a series yourself. (Use the "edit" link just under the series title or add the series directly to the book page.)

You can revise a title of any book by submitting a title-change request - (see guidelines http://www.shelfari.com/groups/59851/about

Only Amanda/Shelfari can change the name of an existing series/list record BUT as that series only has one entry anyway, just create a new series (add the series to the book page) and delete the old - again use that edit link just under the series title.

      One small little nit...

Please DELETE what is already there and ADD the new one with the correct spelling.

If you just change the name of the series in the same text box, Shelfari occasionally leaves the old one hanging around. This is sporadic but, to be on the safe side...

The URL will never "go away" as series and lists are nothing more than default searches - the "list/series" isn't a record or anything in the actual catalog.

What is important is if that "series" (as defined by that URL) continues to show up on the "My Series" listing from your home page or in the What to Read Next feature.

I doubt it will BUT I have one that has been on the My Series list for almost a year now with zero books. Shelfari/Amanda keep saying that they will track down the problem but ...

There are a few of books in the "For Dummies" series that look like the link above - what I mean is that the books are under two series called "for dummies", but they're the same series. When I delete one of the two series on the book page, the number of books in the series goes down. What does this mean? Does it mean that the whole book is taken off of the series, or just one "copy" of the book is taken off?

Very strange! I edited both the series to have book number one as position. When both there I could see it as book one on the series page. When I deleted one series link and left the remaining at position one, it wasn't displaying on the series page as book one.

      I can't explain it!

The For Dummies Series was listed twice in the series section.

When the series was listed twice, there was 608 books. If you deleted one of the series listing there was 607 books in the list. I may have just confused the issue...

The problem was that the 'For Dummies' series had been added twice, once as a Community List and once as a Publisher's Series. This nonsensical scenario confuses Shelfari. Shelfari knows the 'type' of each list, but it requires members to tell it the type if you add the series via the book details page. If the member gets it wrong, Shelfari lacks the basic validation to notice/correct that, and we can end up with the same series being displayed twice.

I'm no longer seeing a "For Dummies" community list, so it should just appear once on your My Series list as a publisher series. Let me know if that's not the case.

It looks like they're the same one, or someone just added the same list twice. I just don't know where the book goes because I delete one series on a book page, and the number of the books in the series goes down. I just want to make sure I'm not completely deleting the book from the series.

Is there any way to see the most recent additions to a list? I ask because I spent hours pulling incorrect titles out of the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list, getting it to its precise unabridged total of 1,294 books, only to have it jump to 1,295 within a few minutes because someone out there thinks they're helping. I can't figure out what got added where and why.

I found the innocent mistake and asked the (Top 10) Editor to be a little more careful in the future, but I assume this problem is going to occur every day for the next 500 years. Is there any way to lock an authoritative list? With the new reading goals sidebar on the front page, it's extremely noticeable when your goal goes from 1,294 books to 1,295, especially when you know for a certainty that it should be at exactly 1,294 books.

Also as the list includes books from three editions of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die I have found that the numbering of the books in the list is pretty useless as different editions have books which are at different numbers in the list and there have been additions and removals from the list, etc. Is there any way this numbering can be sorted out, it's really annoying. I don't know if it would be worth having three different lists for each edition? Or if we are to have one list including all the editions, maybe it could be ordered in a more useful way such as we have in the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die group.

      http://www.shelfari.com/groups/11271/about

If it was ordered in a more coherent way it would be much more useful for seeing which books, if any, need to be added in the future, as I'm sure the list will continue to grow. It will also be much more worthwhile than a random, mixed up list where it is hard to find what you are looking for in it.

      Thanks

We at 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, group use all three lists (it is posted in our description with the correct order). A new edition will be coming out this year and the order will change again and the number of books will increase. The newly created app (for i phone and soon android) has the ability to look at each edition separetly or combined with the correct numbering and order.

Then, I suggest that your "group" own a list called something such as "Combined 10001 Books ..."

I really would like to have each list separately identified. That would help with my personal goal setting. Otherwise, that goal has an always moving target. Currently I use a tag but, with other similar tags, I can have 2 goals: one for the tag and one for the list/series. This helps me ensure that my tagging is correct. Can't do that with the present 1001 list because it keeps bouncing around when members play with it.

Does this sound like a reasonable plan?

As I told Shelfari when the list was first messed up, I'd be willing to work on one list but no way am I gonna climb through what is there now and create separate lists manually.

The app is 1001 Books, there is a small charge for it. http://1001booksapp.com/. I think your solution sounds workable but I can going to check with Kyle on this. Which list of the 3 editions do you work with? How do you decide. We have worked hard over at the group to tag each book with its edition and have made a shelf personality for the books so there is place to check that is kept accurate.

I no longer work with this list due to the thrashing. My edition of the book is 2010. I do not know (or care very much) if or how this differs from the original (2006???) I don't think it does differ because of the copyright info and publishing history in the books but could be mistaken.

You can set up that authorized list (although I'm not certain that a "combined" list really is authorized) and have Amanda lock it.

If, you just happen to wish to set up the separate lists too (hope, hope), Amanda can lock them as well. This would be VERY appropriate as those will not change over time. The important thing, IMMHO, is labeling the lists appropriately. Perhaps something such as "2010 - 1001 Books..." ???

There are 3 editions, with each edition, books are removed and new ones replace those. In 2008, over 200 books were removed to make it more international, in 2010, eleven of the newer books were removed and 11 new ones replaced them. It will be updated this year again. It will constantly change until the editors grow weary or quit making money. We have all the information available at 1001 Books.....group for any one one that is interested. The app also has all that information as well. The total number of books for those that plan to try to read from all three editions is 1294 and that will go up this year. Yes, it does change. It does not change the same and therefore people using the 2006 list get messed up by the people who think the definative list is 2010. It makes it very hard, either you accept all three lists or you need a list that separates out all the editions.

Is it possible to change the title of the current list "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die" to "1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, Combined"? Or does an editor have to go through each entry and change it manually? This would help to differentiate it from future versions of the list, which are part of a special clean-up project, if I'm not mistaken.

Could you, please, look up The Darkest Powers series?
The series contains two trilogies so far. They are a part of the same world.

    The Darkest Powers trilogy
    0.5 Dangerous
    1. The Summoning;
    2. The Awakening;
    3. The Reckoning
    3.5 Belonging
+ Darkest Powers Bonus Pack (0.5 Dangerous; 1.5 Divided; 2.5 Disenchanted)
+ Enthralled - “Facing Facts” / Darkest Powers, narrated by Chloe; Appearing in Enthralled (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/books/)

    Darkness Rising trilogy
    1. The Gathering
    2. The Calling
    3. The Rising

As you can see the author explains it herself:
"Q: Will The Reckoning be the last in the teen series?
A: It’s the last in the initial Chloe trilogy. Book 4 in the “series” will move to different teens in the same world, subjects of another Edison Group experiment." (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/faq)

"Q: Why were plot threads left dangling in The Reckoning if it’s the end of the trilogy?
A: Because it’s the end of the first trilogy, not the end of the series. " (http://www.darkestpowers.com/questions/)

"..The Reckoning is the last book in the trilogy, not the last in the series. It only wraps up the major plotline introduced in The Summoning.
..The next book is The Gathering. Same world. New characters. New Edison Group experiment. The Gathering. starts trilogy #2, Darkness Rising. Chloe and the others will be introduced late in that trilogy." (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/forum/index.php?topic=29132.0)

So The Summoning is book one in the main series, AND book one in the first trilogy. And so on.
The Gathering is Book one of the Darkness Rising trilogy, but it's also book 4 in the Darkest Powers main series.

There are two short stories that are set in the Darkest Powers world, but they are not a part of any of the trilogies:
“Kat” - Darkest Powers, narrated by Katiana; Appeared in The Eternal Kiss • July 2009 • ed. Trisha Telep (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/books/)

“Hunting Kat” - Darkest Powers, narrated by Katiana; Appeared in Kisses from Hell • August 2010
    (http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/books/)
    - Hunting Kat (http://www.shelfari.com/books/25484752/Hunting-Kat)
    - Kisses from Hell

I'm not quite sure what you are asking.

You could set up a "Universe" series to have all the related books together, while still retaining the trilogies in there original series...

I've done most of the work myself.

      The trilogies have to stay.
      Here's The Darkest Powers Trilogy - http://www.shelfari.com/series/The-Darkest-Powers-Trilogy

Darkness Rising maybe should be renamed to The Darkness Rising Trilogy.
      http://www.shelfari.com/series/Darkness-Rising

The Darkest Powers is actually a standard series. To say it's a list is like claiming The Otherworld series by K. Armstrong is a list as well. But it could be renamed to The Darkest Powers World / Main series / Universe, or whatever else you find fit.
      http://www.shelfari.com/series/Darkest-Powers

The problem is that there's always someone to mess the things up. It's really frustrating and I can't go through the same thing every week or so.
Could you contact the librarian who's been deleting the books and rearranging the series and tell them to stop?
      That would definitely help.

It's not a librarian who is undoing your series edits, but a fellow editor. Have you actually approached them and asked why they are undoing your changes? Maybe you can work together?

Also to change the series to the name you actually want, just add the books to a series with the correct name, and then delete the books from the series with the incorrect name.

I just noticed it's an editor, but I still don't feel comfortable confronting her. I'm afraid I won't be able to keep calm and remain polite enough...

I am assume that you are referring to me as the one you need to "confront" since I changed them yesterday...so, I will take that part off your plate.

I apologize for "messing things up"...but when I looked on K. Armstrong's website, I got the impression that there was a Darkest Powers Trilogy and a Darkeness Rising Trilogy. That would be why I broke the two of them up and had planned on moving the other books (Dangerous, etc.) back into the correct trilogies but could not find them with a search. IMO, to add all 6 of them together would be more like a reading "list" and not a standard series.

So, my apologies...and I hope you can keep calm and remain polite with me.

There _is_ a Darkest Powers Trilogy and a Darkness Rising Trilogy. According to the author the two are part of the same series. There's a third trilogy within the series she's already been contracted for, so there'd be at least 9 books.
There are 13 books in Kelley Armstrong's adult series - Otherworld; most of them have different narrators and, except for the last three, are stand alone novels.
It doesn't matter how many books a series contains; the larger number doesn't make it just a reading list.

I understand where the confusion is coming from. Most authors (and publishers) sure don't make it easy on new readers.

It would be better if Shelfari allowed series descriptions and notes. That way this sort of misunderstandings could be easily avoided.

      So, could there be a:

      Darkest Powers (ALL related books)
Darkest Powers Trilogy (3 books) - Marked as Primary
Darkness Rising Trilogy (3 books) - Marked as Primary

Would that work...am I thinking right?

You know it is perfectly ok to have multiple series records when useful. From a purely personal viewpoint (I do not have this particular series), I prefer having the options of the smaller sequences separate and apart from a combined sequence.

The true problem lies when a "list" becomes almost the entire bibliography for a author. Unless there is actually a storyline/character arc that should be read in sequence, then I prefer not having a "combined" list as a standard series (prefer that be a community list) when the cross-over of storyline and/or characters is more incidental than necessary to the reading sequence required (or recommended.)

You can do that yourself. Just hit "edit" next to the number of books.

Note: You will have to delete the last one twice. A Shelfari, um, feature which I guess is intended to prevent the inadvertent deletion of a whole record or something.

You can submit a request to combine the books. For more information on how to do that, check out the editing guidelines here: http://www.shelfari.com/groups/59851/about . If you have any questions after reading the guidelines, let me know.

two books by Graham Masterton, Petrified and Basilisk, contain the same characters and related plot lines but don't show as a series.
The descriptions seem to make Petrified about different people, but that man and his daughter are actually only minor characters.

In the event this is not the correct place to post this, my regret and apology. But it wouldn't be surprising if I were at fault - I am after all male, married and an Idiot :-).
when I look at my Author page here, my Blibliography is listed as:

    Bibliography

    Juan Castillo's Other Name
    A Comedy of Terrors
    Jack Shadow

Unfortunately, for it appears an excellent work - I didn't write 'Juan Castillo's Other Name'. That must be by one of the (currently :-P) better known Graeme Smiths (blushes).
For the record, I did write both 'A Comedy of Terrors' and 'Jack Shadow'. Should I be able to remove Juan Castillo from my Bibliography? I tried, but so far without success.

      Lady Amanda

My thanks indeed - and, no doubt, the thanks of the rather better known Graeme Smith of Juan Castillo fame :-).
I pondered long and hard over whether to take a pen-name. After all, not only am I not the author of 'Juan Castillo', I am not the captain of the South African cricket team, nor the wise scribes who penned 'Frommer's complere Guide: Beijing', 'Gastrointestinal nursing' or 'A Short history of Secularism'. In fact, did I ever suffer a gastrointestinal issue while in Beijing, secular or otherwise, I'd be in real trouble :-).

Easy: On the first book you want to add to the list go to the section series & lists, enter the name of the new list and select the type of list this should be - adding the first book creates a list, removing the last book deletes a list (though it seems you may have to delete that last one twice).

Looking through my pending edits, I noticed this was still there in a combine with two others. The two others def. can be combined, but this could probably be deleted. I am not absolutely sure it is the same book, just really, really close title and same author. (I did click it without looking too close and left the feedback page before I could write a note.)
