Making my way through ALL SK books!!!

    Save Changes Cancel
So being an avid reader I decided to make my way through all of SK's books. I read an SK book every other book so as not to get bored with the writing style. I just finished reading From A Buick 8. I'm trying to read them in the order written but only if in e-book format so I haven't read Christine, Cycle of the Werewolf, Black House (re-releasing end of Nov 2012) or anything nonfiction or out of the ordinary (comic or screenplay). Just reading novels and short story collections. I'm not really a fast reader so its taking me a while I expect to finish early 2014. Have you read all of SK or any other author? Any thoughts?

That sounds like an endeavor, Kathi! I am guessing, when you say you are at From a Buick 8, that you have not read anything beyond? Even so, that puts you well over three quarters of the way I would guess! I bet it is interesting to experience the progression of his style. Regarding King, I have read all but two, and I did not try to read them in any particular order, though for the last fifteen or so years, they have been in the order of publication. Yes, I was one to buy the book on publication day :-) Now, like you, I buy only the e-book. One can only hold so many books on one's shelves, and mine are too full as it is. Maybe its a sign of old age, but I would rather read a book and have it gone rather than keep a read book on my shelf, so e-readers are a boon of epic proportions. I too have not bothered with graphic novelizations or screenplays, though I do read and love King's non-fiction works regarding his life and craft. I would recommend them when you reach the end of his fiction.

I hope you continue to enjoy your literary journey, and that you fill us in periodically on how it is going!

It has been interesting seeing the progression of his work. I'm almost glad the classic Christine isn't in ebook format because that will be interesting to read an earlier novel after reading whatever happens to be the most recent published. I started this after I read the Tower series (up until most recent) so my next would be The Colorado Kid. I intend to continue with another author or a particularly long series like the Stephanie Plum books. I'm enjoying the endeavor and devour it all.

I did this already. It's doable and it's fun!

This is how I read his work as well! I'm now reading The Wind Through the Keyhole and then 11/22/63 to "catch up".

The only other suggestion I would make is, read The Dark Tower Series all together... don't break that up with other books in between. It's really one BIG story, after all.

I too am doing this. I just finished The Dead Zone and have started Firestarter, I feel it is going to take me a long time!

I'm doing it at the rate of every other book and have read only 30 books this year so for me it's definitely taking a long time but so far has been a fun adventure. I have about 13 to go as it stands now. Good luck

That is very ambitious of you. I wish I could to that, but I hate reading electronic books and I don't have the money or space to buy all the King's books. But you inspired me and maybe someday I'll do that too. A suggestion would be to read Christine as soon as you can because it is great and you won't be able to put the book down any second. At least, that's MY opinion. Oh, and if you haven't read Pet Sematary yet, you have my advice to read it by day, it is the only one that really frightened me.

You might try audiobooks and / or your public library.

Im doing the same thing only with printed books. I finished reading "The Stand" and about to start with Night Shift. I had never had book inspired nightmares but The Stand did gave me a couple of bad dreams!

It took me a very long time to read the beggining of The Stand but switched to e-book in the middle then cruised through it. Great book.

"Have you read all of SK or any other author? Any thoughts?"

I had to really think about this question. I've definitely not read all of King's books. I'm the kind of completist who likes that kind of challenge. Yet I'm struggling to think of any author where I've read everything they wrote. The only one that springs to mind is Paolini, because it is recent (don't laugh, but I finished the Eragon books recently http://karldrinkwater.blogspot.com/2013/01/christopher-paolinis-inheritance-cycle.html ).

I'm sure I MUST have read everything by someone else (grumbles to self and scratches head in a bemused way).

Dan Brown but its only like 6 books so not really impressive.I can't really think of any other author I have read in full. I'm about to embark on Under the Dome by SK so I'm getting pretty close to my goal!!!!!!

I intend to read everything Cormac McCarthy has written...he's in my top 5 favorite authors of all time. I've read all of Thomas Mann's works, Dostoevsky, and I'm planning on reading everything by Camus, a new favorite. Right now I'm reading The Plague by Camus and it's excellent...it actually reminds me of King's Under The Dome in some ways, because the town is quarantined and people are going nuts and really suffering, disconnected from the rest of the world. There are a few other authors I'de like to read "all" of too...but for now I've got plenty of great stuff to read.

I've read everything Dashiell Hammett ever wrote- at least everything that's still available in print. Same with James Ellroy. If anyone out there is looking for the perfect crime stories, either classic or post modern, you can't go wrong with those masters.

      Angel-
I have, and he sure is. I've read the Road and All the Pretty Horses. Blood Meridian is one of the books I'm currently reading (at home I'm reading Meridian, on the road I'm working my way through the Stand on audiobook). I am incredibly impressed by Blood Meridian, and am enjoying it very much. I'm taking my time with it, though, it is so rich and written so well that I want to really absorb it. I read a few pages at a time, or one chapter, then put it down to really think about it. I can truly say I've never read an author like him, he is a singular talent.
If you like him you may want to try Ellroy. He's not for everyone, and a couple of his books are less than stellar. But several of them completely blew me away. Check out American Tabloid, which I consider his masterpiece. But be prepared, your hands may actually get dirtier with every turn of the page.

Same here Jonathan, I first read The Road, then All The Pretty Horses Trilogy, then started Blood Meridian and I'm just so blown away by McCarthy...I intend to read all of his books, but I will be kind of sad when the day comes that I have no new McCarthy books left to read! He is by far my most favorite author and I like to describe his writing as celestial, as in, his writing reaches the heavens and beyond! It's strange that I should love him sooo much, because normally I can't stomach brutal violence very well...yet I love McCarthy...it's his truly gifted writing style, and something else which I cannot describe.

I could say almost the same about King...normally I don't care for "horror" yet, I love King's novels.

My only problem with Cormac McCarthy is his bizarre refusal to use apostrophes properly!
