    Vampire Fiction

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend some good vampire fiction? I know about Laurel K. Hamilton and I know there are a lot more out there, so I would appreciate any suggestions. :) I am reading Bram Stoker right now.

I just finished Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian." I thought it was ... just okay. The reason I'm suggesting it is because apparently Kostova bases a great deal of her book on Stoker's book, so if you really like his book, you might enjoy Kostova's. I haven't read Stoker or any other vampire fiction, actually, so I don't how "The Historian" fits into the genre. The reason I said it was only "okay" was because I thought the author was trying a little too hard to be literary, and that sometimes got in the way of her telling the story. But there were also some really interesting parts of the novel, as well. Good luck finding something you enjoy!

I quite enjoyed Barbara Hambly's "Those Who Hunt the Night." It is out of print, but a used bookstore ought to have it.

Isn't the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer about vampires? And there's one by Christopher Moore called 'You Suck' too. Those are the only ones I've heard of lately. I haven't read either of them.

Stephanie Meyers books - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn - are definitely about vampires ;-D but I wouldnt go there unless you are open minded about your perception of vampires and The Vampire Genre... I have a friend who has very strict ideas about How Vampires Should Be Portrayed and she hated them, and it bugged me immensely and annoyed her too so, a warning :) BUT EVERYONE else (in the whole WORLD lol) LOVES them haha and I think theyre FANTASTIC :-D

For Noir Vampires you can't beat Charlie Huston's new series that begins with Already Dead. His style takes a little while to figure out, but it's worth the effort.

For Fantasy Vampires I recommend Barbara & JC Hendee's series that begins with Sister of the Dead .

Robin Mckinley recently came out with a vampire book, "Sunshine". It won the Mythopoeic award. I enjoyed it, but it's not like most other vampire literature. I'd also second Christina K's recommendation of "The Historian."
"The Historian" took a much more 'Dracula-esque' approach to vampires. Vampires featured in it, but not as protagonists, or in any position but the villain.

Also, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan le Fanud - classic Gothic horror.

Christopher Moore's "Blood Sucking Fiends-a love story" is Awesome. "you suck" is the sequal (unless i have them backwards)
it's technically in the Humor category i think. i love his books and i'm not specifically into vampires but this is very good.

As this is one of my current addictions - here goes (however, these are not vampires in the Stoker tradition and are found in the romance section): Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series; J R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series; Lynsay Sands" Family Argenaeu Vampire series; Kathy Love has a series also beginning with Fangs for the Memories, Fangs but no Fangs, and I Only Have Fangs for You; and last but not least the Charlaine Harris series whose main character is Sookie Stackhouse - this is going to be a TV series called True Blood on HBO. If this is what you are looking for - I have more plus other paranormal series.

You might try "The Cowboy and the Vampire" by Clark Hays and Kathleen McFall if you want something different. I found it entertaining.

No vampire-lit list would be complete without Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite, in my opinion :)
