That's a tall order. Any period segment or region of most interest?

I particularly like books about Newfoundland and can recommend a fictional treatment of its history in this century that led to its consolidation:
The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, by Wayne Johnston.

But that's probably not what you had in mind, right?

I haven't read it myself, but 'Journey' by James Michener is supposed to be good. I read 'Poland' by him and although it's fictional his books do teach you a lot about the history of the place, and 'Journey' is set in Canada I believe.

How is Michener? I always think I should read at least one of his books some day.

I read his novel 'Poland' purely because of my interest in the country itself, and I have to say I really enjoyed his style. He achieved a descriptive prose without just filling the page with superfluous adjectives as some authors do. The story itself was good, a little complicated at times due to the number of characters, but on the whole well put together.
      I think he's worth a try.

Well he's prolific, so I should find something that strikes my fancy. I may add him to my ever growing list.
