Rated "E" Manga and Graphic Novels

    Save Changes Cancel
My little boy is an advanced reader but still prefers the excitement of the graphic image when he reads. Any recommendations? He reads 6th-8th grade level but is only 7 so I like to keep the sexual references to a minimum and avoid scenes that portray "blood" or loss of body parts. It seems strange to even have to say that about childrens literature doesn't it?

    Check out: http://www.wowio.com/users/product.asp?BookId=579

My daughter also enjoys graphic novels, and it's difficult to find those that aren't inappropriate.

www.wowio.com is a fun site too. You have to create an account, but then you can download up to 5 books a day. (if you join, and feel generous, you can put my email in as your referral. I'll get credit toward an iPod. pm me for my address) (no pressure though... I only mention it cause I'd love an iPod, but I love sharing book resources more.)

My daughter is WAY into manga and I enjoy graphic novels. Besides working at a bookstore, I also run a manga club (for my daughter) and am on a comicon convention staff.
So, I have a lot of suggestions for all ages manga.

    Beyblade
    Dragon Drive
    Avatar
    Digimon
    Duel Masters
    Zapt!
    Megaman
    Dragonball Z
    Agent Boo
    Kingdom Hearts

Let me know if you want more suggestions!

Thanks you Rose, but I might note that it was a Dragonball Z manga that I unknowingly bought for my son that was rated T. I hadn't known about the rating system on manga and had assumed since it was a children's cartoon, it would have children's content. This was definitely not childrens content. Are there some Dragonball Z Manga books that are rated E? I didn't find any online with a cursory search.

As far as I know, Dragonball Z is all ages. There's a 2nd series called Dragonball that is rated T.

This is a great resource for checking out ratings and profiles of the books offered by Viz.
You can also go to tokyopop.com to look up their manga ratings.
I utilize these two websites often for my manga club.

If you want a list of recent books tha are good for teens ages 12-18, you can go to www.ala.org/yalsa/booklists/gn. This is an annual list for teens and you can view current nominations as well as last years list. Some of them will have blood...but most of those will be obvious in the title. There is manga on the list, too.

My 7yo son LOVES the Asterix/Asterix and Obelix comic series. They originated in France and depict these characters (Gauls) in conflict with the Romans in ancient times. These comics actually enhanced our study of ancient history. You can find them on Amazon.

Excellent, my 7 yr old already has a passion for ancient history so that should be a great mix!
